Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – As of 2025, Baghdad has ascended to the 43rd position among the world's most populous cities, with a metro area population of approximately 8.06 million, according to Ontario Tech University's Sustainability Today.
This growth places Iraq's capital ahead of regional counterparts such as Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (7.7 million), and Alexandria, Egypt (5.7 million).
Cairo remains the most populous city in the Arab world, ranking 6th globally with around 22.6 million residents . Globally, the top three most populated cities are Tokyo, Japan (37.1 million), Delhi, India (33.8 million), and Shanghai, China (29.9 million).
Baghdad's population growth reflects broader urbanization trends in Iraq, where the total population is estimated at 47 million as of mid-2025 . The city's expansion underscores its significance as a central hub in the Middle East, both demographically and economically.

Iraq reopens Al Qaim border crossing with Syria

Baghdad ( – Iraqi authorities announced that the Al Qaim border crossing with Syria has officially reopened to both travelers and commercial cargo, marking a significant step toward restoring bilateral ties and regional connectivity. Situated in Iraq's western Anbar province, approximately 400 kilometers from Baghdad, the Al Qaim crossing is one of the most important land gateways between the two neighboring countries. It had remained shut since December 2024 due to heightened security concerns in Syria. The reopening follows months of diplomatic recalibration after the collapse of the Bashar Al Assad administration, which had strained Baghdad-Damascus relations. Iraqi officials say the decision reflects a broader effort to normalize cross-border movement and stabilize trade and security cooperation in the region.

Iraq Investment Forum postponed due to regional instability and airspace closures

Baghdad ( – The highly anticipated Iraq Investment Forum, which was scheduled to take place in Baghdad on June 14-15, has been postponed until further notice, the Iraqi Economic Council announced on Friday (June 13, 2025). In a statement, the council explained the decision was made due to the ramifications and unstable conditions currently witnessed in the region. These developments have directly affected Iraq and neighboring countries, leading to the closure of airspace and airports in several nations, including Iraq. The preparatory committee confirmed that final preparations for the forum had been fully completed, and official invitations had already been sent to guests from more than 35 Arab and foreign countries. The High Organizing Committee decided to postpone the event, with a new date to be determined and announced later. The forum was set to showcase over 140 pre-approved investment opportunities to local and international businesses.
