Iraq reopens Al Qaim border crossing with Syria
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi authorities announced that the Al Qaim border crossing with Syria has officially reopened to both travelers and commercial cargo, marking a significant step toward restoring bilateral ties and regional connectivity.
Situated in Iraq's western Anbar province, approximately 400 kilometers from Baghdad, the Al Qaim crossing is one of the most important land gateways between the two neighboring countries.
It had remained shut since December 2024 due to heightened security concerns in Syria.
The reopening follows months of diplomatic recalibration after the collapse of the Bashar Al Assad administration, which had strained Baghdad-Damascus relations.
Iraqi officials say the decision reflects a broader effort to normalize cross-border movement and stabilize trade and security cooperation in the region.

Iraq in touch with the US and Iran to keep out of conflict
Baghdad – Baghdad has asked Tehran not to target US interests on Iraqi soil, a senior security official said Saturday, as Washington's ally Israel and Iran traded blows, heightening tensions across the region. The government in Baghdad is a close ally of Tehran but also a strategic partner of Iran's arch-foe the United States, which has some 2,500 troops in Iraq as part of an anti-extremist coalition. Fearing being caught up in a regional escalation, the Iraqi government asked Tehran not to strike in its territory, a senior Iraqi security official told AFP. 'The request was made. They promised us positive things,' said the official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The official added that Tehran has shown understanding with regards to Baghdad's request. Before the current escalation, which began early Friday with a series of Israeli attacks on military and nuclear sites in Iran, Tehran had threatened to strike military bases hosting US forces in the region in the event of a conflict triggered by the possible failure of nuclear talks with Washington. Throughout the Gaza war, which began in October 2023 and has pitted Israel against Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas, Tehran-aligned armed factions have launched dozens of rocket and drone attacks targeting US forces in Iraq and in neighboring Syria. Before the wave of attacks began, the United States on Wednesday announced it was reducing staffing at its Baghdad embassy, citing security reasons. Several pro-Iran groups in Iraq called on Friday to accelerate the departure of US forces from the country, with the powerful Kataeb Hezbollah warning of 'additional wars in the region.'

Iraq Approves Measures to Boost Domestic Industrial Oil Production
By John Lee. The Iraqi Cabinet has approved the recommendations of the committee tasked with reviewing and addressing issues related to locally produced and imported industrial oils, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the domestic manufacturing sector. Key decisions include: Formation of a committee chaired by the Deputy Minister of Oil, with members from the Federation of Industries, the Central Organisation for Standardisation and Quality Control (COSQC), technical and economic departments of the Ministry of Oil, Midland Refineries Company (MRC), Organised Crime Directorate, Industrial Development Directorate, Customs, Border Crossings Authority, and private-sector blending and packaging facilities. The committee is mandated to monitor developments related to the product reports, engage relevant stakeholders to address obstacles to production, blending, packaging, and marketing, and promote modern specifications to support domestic manufacturing. The ultimate goal is to phase out imports and prepare export plans for surplus production. The committee will review production and manufacturing trends for motor oils based on reports from regulatory and technical bodies, focusing on volumes and types produced. The aim is to support local industry, attract private investment, create youth employment, reduce reliance on imports, and open up export opportunities under an incentive-driven framework. These measures are part of Iraq's broader industrial policy to develop competitive local products and encourage sustainable economic growth. (Source: Iraqi Government)
