Aster unveils $250 million expansion plan in Saudi Arabia
Aster DM Healthcare, a leading integrated healthcare provider in the GCC, plans to invest approximately $250 million in Saudi Arabia over the next two to three years, which includes hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.
The company has maintained a presence in Saudi Arabia for the past decade, expanding its retail pharmacy format into the kingdom through a joint venture.
As part of this plan, Aster Pharmacy, the retail arm of Aster DM Healthcare, has commenced operations in the kingdom with 15 stores across Riyadh, including its flagship store at Trio Plaza. Trio is the largest store of Aster Pharmacy in the GCC, spanning 711 square meters, offering an expansive range of over 13,000 products.
Following the successful entry into the Saudi market in September 2023, Aster Pharmacy has rapidly expanded its footprint, establishing 15 stores in Riyadh alone. This growth is being facilitated in strategic partnership with the Al Hokair Holding Group, a prominent retail partner in the region. It is supported by myAster — the group's healthcare app which provides the complete digital solution combining all Aster services in the country. The app was launched in Saudi Arabia during LEAP 2025.
Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder and Chairman of Aster DM Healthcare said: 'As we embark on our expansion across hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and digital health, we value the chance to contribute to Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. I am confident that Aster's integrated healthcare model, which has played a key role in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in many countries, will help shape the future of healthcare in Saudi Arabia.'
Mishal Al Hokair, Deputy CEO of Abdul Mohsen Al Hokair Holding Group stated, 'The partnership brings a visionary approach to Saudi Arabia's healthcare landscape. Together, we are setting a new standard in community access to healthcare, offering an unmatched shopping experience and wellness support for families across the Kingdom. Trio is just the beginning of what we are building together.'
The launch event was attended by Mohammed bin Ali Al-Saheb, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Investment and Development, officials from the government, along with leaders from Aster DM Healthcare and Abdul Mohsen Al Hokair Group.
Alisha Moopen, Managing Director & Group CEO, Aster DM Healthcare GCC said: 'As the largest country in GCC and the second fastest growing economy in the world, it is impressive to witness the tremendous progress that Saudi Arabia has made within such a short period of time. As one of the first private healthcare providers to set up operations in the country, we at Aster DM Healthcare had the privilege of witnessing this growth journey very closely and we remain steadfast in our commitment to support the achievement of Vision 2030 by bringing the best of Aster's integrated healthcare model to the Kingdom. We are looking to expand across major cities in the country through the opening of new hospitals, launch of Aster Clinics and more Aster Pharmacy stores.'
Aster's expansion is expected to significantly boost job prospects in Saudi Arabia. 'This expansion is expected to create around 1,500 to 1,600 frontline jobs, with additional support roles. Post-COVID, the digital health market, including telehealth and virtual consultations, has seen significant growth. The myAster app delivers over 3,000 orders daily in the UAE, with 60 per cent being express deliveries within 60 minutes,' said N.S Balasubramanian, CEO at Aster Pharmacy.
Their digital presence, through the myAster app, launched at LEAP, aims to offer a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem including teleconsultations and home delivery of health products.
Aster views Saudi Arabia and the UAE as the biggest opportunities within the GCC. 'There is a huge potential due to the lower per capita pharmacy count in Saudi Arabia and government initiatives supporting private sector involvement in healthcare management,' Balasubramanian said.

GE Vernova's H-Class gas turbines to expand Qurayyah power plant
GE Vernova has announced it has secured an order for five 7H-Class gas turbines - three 7HA.03 and two 7HA.02 units – from Técnicas Reunidas and Orascom Construction (TR & Orascom Construction). The two companies have signed, under a 50-50 joint venture, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project in the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia. This expansion project, a 3 gigawatt (GW) combined cycle gas-fired power plant with readiness to build a carbon capture unit, aims to bolster electricity production capacity and enhance operational efficiency in Saudi Arabia. Expanding Saudi Arabia's fleet of combined cycle power plants plays a crucial role in Saudi Arabia's plan to generate half of its electricity from gas by 2030 and half from renewables, paving the way to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2060, a statement said. Hajr Two Electricity Co, a company owned by ACWA Power, the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC – Principal Buyer) in February 2025. Hajr Two Electricity Co commented: 'The QIPP Expansion Project is a very ambitious project and we are proud to support its development. We look forward to working with TR & Orascom Construction and GE Vernova to contribute to Saudi Arabia's enhancement of its electricity supply as the Kingdom transitions its power generation mix to incorporate more renewable energy in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and its ambitious sustainability targets.' 'QIPP project is evidence of Saudi Arabia's strong belief in the future of gas as it emits less CO2 and other pollutants than oil-fueled power plants,' said Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East & Africa. 'We have developed a productive and successful relationship with TR & Orascom Construction building on our proven expertise in natural gas combined cycle plant engineering, operability, and plant integration, and we are delighted to deploy some of our most advanced power generation technologies, with the potential to integrate carbon capture solutions to help significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in QIPP's and other gas power plants in Saudi Arabia.' GE Vernova has been playing a pivotal role in fostering the evolution of the Kingdom's energy infrastructure for almost 90 years, supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts and still does so today in support of Saudi Vision 2030. The company currently employs approximately 850 people in Saudi Arabia. GE Vernova's investments in the Kingdom include the Khobar Integration Facility (KIF) for grid solutions, as well as the GE Manufacturing and Technology Center (GEMTEC) campus in Dammam, which encompasses a Services and Repairs Center for gas turbines, the GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT) facility for the manufacturing of gas turbines, components and accessory modules, the GE MENA Decarbonization Center of Excellence, and a Monitoring & Diagnostics Center for the remote monitoring of power generation assets. PIF Considers SITE IPO Amid Economic Diversification Push
Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund , is evaluating an initial public offering for its wholly-owned technology arm, Saudi Information Technology Company , as part of broader efforts to bolster the kingdom's economic diversification strategy. According to individuals familiar with the matter, PIF has approached investment banks to submit proposals for roles in a potential share sale of SITE. The discussions are in preliminary stages, with specifics such as the IPO's size and timeline yet to be determined. Established in 2017, SITE operates at the forefront of Saudi Arabia's digital transformation, offering services in cybersecurity, cloud computing, and systems integration. The company has been instrumental in securing critical national infrastructure and supporting various digital initiatives aligned with Vision 2030, the kingdom's blueprint for reducing reliance on oil revenues. ADVERTISEMENT SITE's portfolio includes a range of digital platforms and services, such as SITE Postal, SITE Inform, and SITE Guard, designed to enhance the digital ecosystem within the country. The company has also forged strategic partnerships to advance its technological capabilities. Notably, in collaboration with South Korea's AhnLab, SITE has invested over SAR 500 million to bolster cybersecurity technologies across the Middle East and North Africa region. The potential IPO of SITE reflects PIF's ongoing strategy to monetize its assets and inject liquidity into the national economy. This move aligns with previous initiatives, including the exploration of public listings for other PIF-backed entities such as Nupco, the kingdom's largest medical procurement firm. Saudi Arabia's push into the technology sector has gained momentum, with significant investments aimed at positioning the country as a global tech hub. The launch of Humain, a state-owned artificial intelligence company backed by PIF, underscores this ambition. Humain plans to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and has secured partnerships with major international tech firms to develop data centers and AI models. The kingdom's commitment to technological advancement is further evidenced by initiatives like the LEAP Tech Event, an annual conference that has attracted global attention and investment. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to foster innovation, create high-tech employment opportunities, and diversify the economy away from oil dependency.
