13 dead in 15 days as ‘toxic drain' sparks health crisis in UP village
Meerut: Thirteen people have died in the past 15 days in Budhpur village, Baghpat, with locals blaming toxic waste discharged into a nearby drain for contaminating the groundwater and triggering a health crisis.
The deaths, mostly from heart attacks, kidney failure and infections, have caused panic among villagers, who said no administrative action has been taken so far.
Former village pradhan Surendra Pal Singh said the most recent death was that of a 70-year-old woman who died of a liver-related illness at a hospital in Meerut. He added that the drain carries chemical effluents from sugar mills and untreated sewage from nearby colonies.
Singh said, "Sugar mills in the Baraut region discharge chemicals into nearby water bodies, harming aquatic life and contaminating the groundwater. Most villagers cannot afford water purifiers. This contaminated water poses serious health risks, damages crops and is fatal to livestock. It eventually flows into the Krishni river, a major tributary of the Hindon that runs through the district," he said.
Anil Kumar, a resident of nearby Chilora village in Meerut, said, "I lost my wife 15 years ago to blood cancer when she was just 35, and two uncles, aged 56 and 60, to lung cancer.
The water from hand pumps and tube wells is contaminated due to untreated waste from sugar mills, paper mills and other factories." The only solution, he added, is to flush the system with clean water to dilute the toxins.
Dr Vijay Kumar, medical superintendent of Baraut community health centre, said, "Nine deaths have been confirmed following a survey. All of them were chronic patients. After the issue came to light, we conducted a medical camp where over 100 villagers were screened.
Only common illnesses were detected during the check-up."
Baghpat MP Rajkumar Sangwan said, "This is a serious issue. If mills are dumping untreated waste into water bodies, the Pollution Control Board and district administration must be held accountable. The issue may be linked to a small drain, but the lack of adequate healthcare facilities in Baghpat is also a major concern."

Air India plane crash: Streamlined DNA verification at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital ensures dignified handling of victims' remains
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 15 (ANI): Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, Civil Hospital has established a streamlined and compassionate system for handling the mortal remains of the victims. From DNA verification to postmortem procedures, and respectful handover to families, the hospital's efficient and sensitive approach has ensured accuracy and dignity for grieving relatives. At Kaushoti Bhavan in D Block, the process begins with meticulous DNA sampling and verification, a significant improvement over older, less organised documentation methods. This step ensures accurate identification of the deceased before further procedures are initiated. Once verified, the postmortem room takes over, preparing remains with precision and care. While the postmortem room operates, relatives are supported in a dedicated waiting room, where counsellors and public relations officers provide emotional and logistical assistance. After procedures are complete, families are escorted with arranged transportation to receive the mortal remains, ensuring a respectful handover. Civil Hospital's integrated approach, from Kaushoti Bhavan's documentation to the postmortem room's efficiency and compassionate dispatch, sets a standard for handling sensitive processes with professionalism and empathy. Nodal Officer, Civil Hospital, Arvind Vijayan explains the process, 'After receiving the DNA reports, the verification centre in D2 block of Civil Hospital has been activated, located in front of the Medical Superintendent's office. When relatives arrive to collect the remains, verification is conducted there. After verification, the report is sent to the post-mortem room, and the procedure is initiated. Until then, the relatives are seated in the waiting room with a counsellor and the medical team.' Meanwhile, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said that former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among those who died in the tragic Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. His identity was confirmed through DNA matching. Rupani was one of the 241 passengers who lost their lives after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. 'Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost his life during the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has been matched. He worked for the people of Gujarat for several years. The mortal remains of Rupani will be handed over to his family, and the authorities will decide on the final rites,' Sanghavi said. (ANI)

Confusion deepens over death toll in Ahmedabad plane crash; officials silent
AHMEDABAD: No official death toll has been declared yet in the AI-171 crash, but a civil hospital doctor on Saturday confirmed receiving 270 bodies. The Air India flight carried 242 passengers—only one, Vishwas, survived. So far, identities of four doctors and nine civilians have been confirmed, while 272 DNA samples have been collected, indicating 18 remain untraced. As the government continues to withhold an official death toll in the Ahmedabad plane crash, discrepancies have begun to emerge. On Saturday, Dr. Dhaval Gameti of Civil Hospital revealed to the media that 270 bodies had been Recived — a figure that sharply contrasts with the official silence. This raises serious questions, considering the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carried 242 passengers and crew, including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian. Adding to the toll, at least 13 local residents, including four medical students, died when the aircraft came down in a densely populated area of Ahmedabad.
