Felcra records RM178m profit, with RM101m payout to participants starting today, says Zahid
PASIR SALAK, Aug 17 — Felcra Bhd has recorded a profit of RM178 million for up to April 2025, showing an increase compared to the previous year. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, stated that of this amount, RM101 million will be distributed to 74,300 participants nationwide in stages starting today. 'I congratulate Felcra Bhd for successfully maintaining a strong performance, with an increase of nearly RM2 million compared to the same period last year. I will be monitoring the profit distribution to all participants across the country,' he said at the 2025 First Interim Distributable Profit Declaration Ceremony for Felcra Bhd participant projects held here today. Also present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and Felcra Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Idris Lasim. In addition, Ahmad Zahid said Felcra Bhd continues to make history in strengthening national food security through the commercialisation of Felcra's MRQ 107 paddy – a local fragrant rice variety that serves as a high-quality alternative to imported fragrant rice. He stated that the Seberang Perak area, covering more than 3,400 hectares and cultivated using modern methods by Felcra, has shown encouraging performance with an average yield reaching eight metric tonnes per hectare annually. 'We expect production to exceed 27,000 metric tonnes of paddy, equivalent to over 16,000 metric tons of rice per year, which can meet the needs of thousands of families. Hopefully, this becomes an example for other paddy farmers,' he said. Meanwhile, Idris said the performance of the first interim distribution for 2025 was influenced by several key factors, including efficient estate management and the implementation of cost-saving measures. 'Through effective approaches in the use of fertilisers, pesticides, and farm inputs, operational costs were reduced by 15 per cent, and yield per hectare increased by 49 per cent,' he said. Idris also informed that Felcra's oil palm projects recorded an average net profit increase of 81 per cent. He emphasised that while profit distribution rates are influenced by crude palm oil price trends, improvements in estate performance remain the primary determining factor. — Bernama

Help other Penang estate families get houses, says Ramasamy
Urimai chairman P Ramasamy said the Penang government should show kindness to the Indian families who have toiled for generations in estates across the state. PETALING JAYA : The Penang government has been urged to provide homes at a nominal price to former estate workers and those displaced from other estates. Urimai chairman P Ramasamy praised the state government for honouring its pledge to provide free housing to the 23 families in Ladang Sungai Kechil in Nibong Tebal, but said the state should also show kindness to other Indian families who have 'toiled for generations' in estates across Penang. He said chief minister Chow Kon Yeow was well aware of the plight of former plantation workers in the state. 'Let not overzealous, pro-capitalist elements in the administration prioritise profit over the welfare and dignity of the workers,' he said in a Facebook post. 'If the former Caledonia estate workers were able to purchase low-cost terrace houses for as little as RM10, I fail to see why the same principle cannot be applied to Ladang Sungai Kechil.' Earlier today, Chow said the state government will provide houses in a state-backed development project to 23 families at the Sungai Kechil estate who were facing eviction. Each family will receive a three-bedroom single-storey terrace house of 750 sq ft with parking space in front. In 2019, Penang Chief Minister Inc signed a deal with the Eco World group to build 272 single-storey, low-cost homes and amenities for the families of workers living as squatters in Caledonia estate.

SINGAPORE, Aug 17 — Winning RM800,000 at a slot machine? Great. Figuring out how to bring it across the border to Singapore? That was a headache Sherylynn Kok did not anticipate. The Straits Times reported that Ko, 28, won the large sum while on a Genting weekend getaway with her parents and boyfriend. 'I kept changing slot machines and finally sat down at a random one,' she said, saying until that moment she had been on a losing streak. She ended up winning the grand prize, and it was verified by casino staff, who were accompanied by security guards. Kok was handed a backpack of cash – eight bundles of RM100,000, in RM10,000 notes that she said was 'crazy heavy.' When she got to the airport with her parents and boyfriend, she found out she needed Bank Negara approval to bring the cash on a plane. That left Kok and her boyfriend having to stay behind to figure out what to do while her parents flew home to Singapore first. In the end she managed to open a Malaysian bank account with OCBC that also allowed dual-currency flexibility so she could switch between the ringgit and Singapore dollar. Kok claims that she is a disciplined gambler. 'I gamble not because I want to earn money, but because once in a while, there is nothing to do, and I have no plans over the weekends,' she said. She has no plans to do more with the money besides keep it in a savings account as she doesn't understand more complex investment options. Kok is also pragmatic about her win: 'I don't think S$200,000 (RM656,896) will last you a lifetime.' She had seen firsthand how a friend of a friend won S$1.4 million from Toto and spent in all in less than a year and has decided to maintain her current 'low-maintenance' lifestyle.
