Lorde Bares It All On New ‘Virgin' Album Cover, Fans Spot Unexpected Detail

Yahoo01-05-2025

just dropped a bombshell, and fans are still picking their jaws up off the floor.
The 28-year-old Grammy-winning singer shocked the internet on Wednesday by unveiling the wildly provocative artwork and title for her fourth studio album, "Virgin."
And let's just say… Lorde understood the assignment.
Posted to her Instagram, TikTok, and website, the jaw-dropping cover appears to be an X-ray of a pelvic area, complete with visible hip bones, a belt buckle, a zipper, and one small detail that sent fans spiraling, a T-shaped object resembling an IUD (intrauterine device), a form of long-term birth control.
It's unclear if the X-ray is of Lorde herself, but regardless, fans went wild.
Alongside the bold artwork, the 'Royals' singer announced that the album was '100% written in blood' and revealed it would drop on June 27.
'An album by me,' she teased. 'Produced by me and Jim-E Stack.' She doubled down on the moody drama with merch already available featuring the X-ray image.
The response online? Pure chaos.
'Lorde putting an IUD on the album cover is very political. Can't wait,' someone noted, interpreting it as a statement on reproductive rights.
'The IUD on Lorde's new cover??? CONTRACEPTIVE QUEEN,' another fan cheered.
'I WASN'T PREPARED FOR THIS ON A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, LORDE,' one stunned fan said.
"SICKEST ALBUM ARTWORK I AM FLOORED," one of her fans exclaimed.
'NOT THE IUD BEING ON THE COVER FOR AN ALBUM CALLED 'VIRGIN' OH MY LORDE YOUR BRAIN NEEDS STUDIED. THIS ALBUM COVER EATSSSS SO HARD,' wrote another, summing up the collective hysteria.
Lorde has been vocal about reproductive rights, especially after Roe v. Wade. In true Lorde fashion, during one of her shows, she gently encouraged the audience to take a moment to pause and breathe.
'Like so many of you, I've been sickened and heartbroken this week by the news that there are some people who think that our bodies are not our own,' the singer said at the time, according to Billboard. 'And I still don't have the words to talk about this with you. It's so big and so heavy. I think it's OK to freeze for a little bit, you know, and then you re-engage."
She clarified, "But what I'm trying to say is I have some big, heavy sh-t that I am working through that I am feeling.'
Others weren't sure what to make of the cover art.
'Girl, what are we looking at?' another asked, confused and intrigued.
"Excuse me, ma'am?" someone else commented.
"I'm confused," a third stated.
"Took me a moment, and then I realized Lorde posted this?" another TikToker said.
Meanwhile, one of Lorde's fans chimed in, setting the record straight. "Why does everyone keep asking what this means? Typically, a new song = an upcoming new album. This is the cover art of new album, and the name of new album," they wrote. "Said album will be released on 6/27.
The X-ray cover, which mixes raw medical imagery with feminine symbolism, comes with an email Lorde sent to fans, where she admitted she's 'proud and scared' of the project.
'The color of the album is clear. Like bathwater, windows, ice, spit. Full transparency,' she wrote. 'The language is plain and unsentimental... I was trying to make a document that reflected my femininity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, openhearted, spiritual, masc.'
'There's nowhere to hide. I believe putting the deepest parts of ourselves to music is what sets us free.'
The bold announcement follows the April 25 release of her new single, "What Was That," her first new music since 2021's "Solar Power." The track's music video, partially filmed during a real-life bike ride to Washington Square Park, marked her official return after nearly four years out of the spotlight.
With "Virgin" dropping June 27 and the internet already ablaze, one thing's for sure. Lorde isn't just back, she's coming in unapologetically raw, unfiltered, and possibly IUD-powered.

Billy Joel's ex-wife Elizabeth Weber speaks out after his brain disorder diagnosis

Billy Joel's first ex-wife, Elizabeth Weber, has broken her silence following the iconic musician's shocking brain disorder diagnosis. The 'Uptown Girl' hitmaker, who was married to Weber from 1973 to 1982, revealed last month that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Following the diagnosis, Weber reflected on the pair's ill-fated marriage — saying that she always knew the so-called Piano Man would become a star. 5 Billy Joel's first ex-wife, Elizabeth Weber, has broken her silence following the iconic musician's shocking brain disorder diagnosis. 'I've never known anybody who worked harder than he did in all those years we were together and working together.' While the 5-time Grammy winner, 76, wasn't in attendance at the glitzy premiere, his wife Alexis Roderick Joel, 43, was there in his place. 'I just want him to be restored to good health so he can enjoy his life and his wife and his children. He earned that,' Weber said of her ex-husband. 'There's too many of them, and they're all marvelous,' she said. 'Someone can be in the audience and look at him and say, 'That could be me.'' 'Not everybody can be an unnamed pianist who sings, but everyone thinks that they could do that or be that,' she added. 'Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH),' the 'Only the Good Die Young' crooner's team said in a lengthy Instagram announcement on May 23. 'This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,' it continued. 'Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.' 5 The crooner revealed last month that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Following the news, his wife Alexis broke her silence on the diagnosis, thanking fans for the 'outpouring of love and support.' 'We are so grateful for the wonderful care and swift diagnosis we received,' she wrote on Instagram. 'Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world. We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.' During an episode of SiriusXM's 'The Howard Stern Show' Tuesday, the 71-year-old shock jock insisted that the crooner is 'not dying.' 5 The 'New York State of Mind' musician canceled all his tour dates through next year after he announced his diagnosis. Getty Images 'I saw Billy Joel two weeks ago,' he told co-host Robin Quivers. 'We had dinner together.' 'Yeah, he does have issues,' Stern continued. 'But he said, 'Yeah, you can tell people, you know, I'm not dying.' You know, he wants people to know that. He just, he's gotta deal with some medical stuff, but he was delightful.'

Dakota Johnson's Naked Outfit Is Available To Buy Now And It May Well Be The Ultimate Revenge Outfit

ELLE UK cover star Dakota Johnson is the epitome of a 'cool girl'. Not in a try hard way, or a fake way, just in the way some women are - effortlessly and insouciantly cool. Maybe it's her fringe (but that's a chicken and egg situation if we ever did see one), maybe it's her dry sense of humour, or maybe it's her Seventies-does-French-girl fashion sense that makes us fall in love with her time and time again, who knows? FIND OUT MORE AT ELLE COLLECTIVE Proving her cool girl status, the Materialists star stepped out yesterday in New York wearing a sheer top and skirt set from 2021 LVMH Prize-winning brand Nensi Dojaka. Featuring a wrap front and a fishtail skirt, Johnson paired the mesh set with a Gucci handbag, and stiletto heels. This outing to film Late Night with Seth Meyers comes days after reports have suggested Johnson's eight year relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has come to a close. While we're sure Martin has continued his legacy of amicable split-ups (conscious uncoupling, anyone?), this Dojaka set does have a whiff of the 'revenge dress' about it. Forever versatile, Johnson stepped out a few days ago in a similarly foxy, but a little more covered up, bootlegs and bodysuit look. Be it revenge dresses or jeans and a nice top, Johnson is our 2024 it girl muse. ELLE Collective is a new community of fashion, beauty and culture lovers. Dog's 'Soulmate' Dies—What She Does Next Breaks Owner's Heart

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Animal lovers' hearts have broken after seeing how a dog reacted after losing her beloved sibling. Mariah, who posts to TikTok under the username @mariahandgigi, is the owner of Belgian Malinois mix Gigi, and until recently, also had Shih Tzu, Rocky. Mariah lost senior dog Rocky late in 2024 at age 12, having had him since childhood, and regularly posts videos of him in remembrance—playing, napping, on walks, and playing with his sister, Gigi. One video, shared May 11, racked up more than half a million views as viewers' hearts broke at what it showed. At first, the clip showed Rocky and Gigi hanging out together, Gigi relaxing and lying quietly, while Rocky posed on his back and wiggled around, kicking his legs, and a second short clip taken at a different time showed the two dogs in the same position. But the two final videos showed Gigi, this time on her own, Rocky having passed on. And she lies on her back, rolling and wiggling around, her legs in the air—just like Rocky used to do. Mariah wrote over the video: "Soulmated so hard your sister absorbed your little quirks as soon as you left," and added in the caption: "We miss our boy." TikTok users flocked to the video, one writing: "This one's for you, man," and another suggesting Gigi "probably was coping too." "Someone has to carry on the tradition," another said, as one emotional viewer admitted: "I am sobbing. How absolutely beautiful, their unconditional love is never gone, just a little bit further away till you and your baby reunite again." And as one wrote: "She wanted to make sure you knew he was still there being silly." Gigi and Rocky the Shih Tzu, rolling on his back. Gigi and Rocky the Shih Tzu, rolling on his back. TikTok @mariahandgigi Dogs can have many reactions to another pet in the household dying, and could become clingy, anxious or even depressed, according to Dogs Trust. Owners can help their surviving pet by keeping a close eye on their pet to see how they are coping, including by a pet camera while they're alone in the house. Take time before removing reminders of the other animal—such as beds and blankets—and don't rush into getting another dog. Going on plenty of walks and sticking to the dog's normal routine can all assist in helping your dog cope with a loss. Newsweek has contacted @mariahandgigi via TikTok for comment on this story.
