AUCKLAND, 5 May 2025 – Nationwide consumer spending in April was slightly above the levels seen in the same month last year, according to figures released today by Worldline NZ, with the extra spending occurring mostly outside the major centres.
Consumer spending through all Core Retail merchants in Worldline NZ's payments network in April 2025 reached $3.74B, which is up +0.9% on April 2024, following adjustments for merchants coming and going from the network.
Worldline NZ's Chief Sales Officer, Bruce Proffit says a key influence on consumer spending patterns in the month was the Easter public holidays, which fell fully within April this year, and also within the April school holiday period.
'It does appear that many people journeyed out of the major centres over the school, Easter, and Anzac Day holidays this year. This inference follows from the monthly spending declines we saw in the major centres and higher growth in the regions, and from the spending patterns around the Easter long weekend,' he says.
Proffit says the spending pattern over Easter was similar to last year, when Easter spanned March and April, with the traditional peaks on occurring on Easter Thursday and Easter Sunday.
'The average spend per day between Thursday and Monday was $119.2m, which was down 2.4% on Easter 2024. However, the extra spending near the start of the school holidays suggests more people went away this year than in 2024.'

The average underlying Core Retail spending per day between Thursday 10th April and Wednesday 16th April 2025 was $129.3m, up 6.6% on average over Thursday 11th April to Wednesday 17th April 2024 ($121.2m).
Notably, annual regional Core Retail spending growth for the full month of April was highest in West Coast (+8.1%), Whanganui (+7.5%), Otago (+6.1%), Taranaki (+5.0%) and Waikato (+4.7%), while monthly spending declined in Auckland/Northland (-1.5%) and Wellington (-2.2%) and was unchanged from last year in Canterbury (0.0%).

For once, it is white on time. Snowguns at Queenstown's Coronet Peak and The Remarkables skifields fired up last night, and they will keep cranking for as long as possible to bolster the natural snowfall arriving in a perfectly timed polar blast, ahead of the scheduled season opening on June 14. NZSki chief executive Paul Anderson expected up to 30cm of snow could be on the way, but more importantly, bitterly cold temperatures forecast would enable "solid snow-making" over the next five or six days which should mean Coronet could open top to bottom next week. "We are confident that we will be open on the 14th, as advertised." Mr Anderson said the plan was for both Queenstown skifields to open on the same day. "The reason we've done that, I noticed this last year, as soon as we opened, town got busy. "I think it's really important that we send a really strong signal to the market that Queenstown is open for business." He believed last month was "one of the most sudden shoulder seasons we've had for a few years", but questioned if it was just more noticeable because of the huge influx of people to the Wakatipu between Easter and Anzac Day. NZSki employs about 1300 people across its three mountains including Mt Hutt. Of those, 900 are in Queenstown. Mr Anderson said the company had a staff return rate of more than 50% and a record 6000-plus applications for about 600 remaining jobs. Accommodation-wise, some of the heat had been taken out of the market through a 90-bed CBD hostel, a new apartment development off Fryer St, comprising six two-bedroom units, and four or five houses NZSki owned near Gorge Rd, all of which were full. "Then you'll have staff that are returning that already know where they're going — they kind of work out their flats and flatting situations, year to year — so we're focused on the new people coming in." Transport to and from The Remarkables would be similar to last year. Those who did not have a full car would be in carpark 4 and get a shuttle "right up to the door" of the ski area, ensuring families and those with full cars got the closest parks. Cardrona Alpine Resort, owned by RealNZ, was also targeting a June 14 opening. Treble Cone has a tentative opening date of June 27.

'While this spending uptick is not large – and was in part due to a favourable fall of days in May – it is at least a positive sign,' he says. Proffit says the retail sectors that showed the most year-on-year growth within the overall spend included Food & Beverage, Clothing, Chemists, and Hospitality, which includes cafes, restaurants and Accommodation. The slight, but positive, growth rate has also continued into June, with, consumer spending through all Core Retail merchants in Worldline NZ's payments network over the three days of the King's Birthday long weekend (31 May to 2 June) reaching $0.39B, up +1.0% on the King's Birthday long weekend in 2024, following adjustments for merchants coming and going from the network. The annual growth rate for the King's Birthday long weekend in Auckland/Northland was +0.8%, while the highest growth rate was in Nelson (+6.8%) and the lowest was in Bay of Plenty (-1.1%). Meanwhile, across the regions, Core Retail spending growth for the full month of May was highest in Whanganui (+6.9%), Otago (+4.6%) and Nelson (+4.1%), while spending is still declining in Wellington (-1.3%).
