Amit Shah To Rename Delhi Road After Bodo Leader Upendranath Brahma
New Delhi: In a significant tribute to Bodofa Upendranath Brahma's legacy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) would rename a stretch of Lala Lajpat Rai Marg in south Delhi to Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg, officials said.
A statue of Bodofa would also be unveiled at the Kailash Colony roundabout.
Officials said that fondly known as the father of the Bodo people, Bodofa Upendranath Brahma was a visionary leader and social reformer who worked tirelessly for the rights, identity, and upliftment of the Bodo community.
At a ceremony on May 1 at Kailash Colony, Union Home Minister Amit Shah would formally rename the stretch of Lala Lajpat Rai Marg road to Bodofa Upendranath Brahma Marg and unveiled the statue of Bodofa.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Delhi counterpart Rekha Gupta, along with Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Welfare Minister of Bodoland Urkhao Gwra Brahma and All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) President Dipen Boro would be present in the event.
The renamed stretch is an 835-metre and 50-feet wide road located near Kailash Colony Metro Station, passing alongside the Bodoland Guest House.
The May 1 ceremony would be organised by the Assam government and it marks the 35th death anniversary of the iconic Bodo leader.
In this connection commemorating Bodofa, ABSU has decided to illuminate five lakh earthen lights and candle lights on May 1 in every household and public place across Bodoland Territorial Region and Assam.
ABSU President Dipen Boro, said, "Bodofa Upendranath Brahma dedicated his life to building an inclusive society where people could live with dignity and secure their rightful place."
His ideas continue to guide generations towards peaceful change and collective progress, he added.
The ABSU President said that naming of a road and installation of his statue in the heart of the national capital is a proud moment for all Bodo people.
Noting that it stands as a lasting tribute to his work and ideals, he added: "It was the commitment of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the memorandum submitted by ABSU at the Parliament House on December 6, 2024, and announcement for naming of Upendra Nath Brahma Marg and statue at the open session of 57th Annual Conference of All Bodo Students Union held at Dotma, Kokrajhar, on March 15."
The recognition highlights Bodofa's impact and his efforts to empower communities, Boro said.
The event (May 1) would bring together leaders, citizens and students to honour his life, principles and enduring influence, ABSU President added.

PM unveils next-gen GST reform draft
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that the Central government has drafted a proposal for the next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms and has sent it to the states. He sought the cooperation of state governments to implement the proposal before Diwali this year. Speaking after inaugurating two new expressways in Delhi, Modi emphasised that these reforms would benefit not only the poor and middle class but also both small and large businesses. Modi explained that the proposed changes in the GST law aim to simplify the system and adjust tax rates, which will benefit a wide range of people and businesses. 'This is a major step toward making GST more accessible, especially for businesses and consumers,' he said. The Central government intends to introduce a simplified GST structure and will consider revising tax slabs to reduce the burden on various segments of society. In his Independence Day speech on August 15, the PM had already announced plans for these changes, describing them as a step toward promoting good governance. 'For us, reforms mean moving forward with good governance,' he had said earlier. The Prime Minister reiterated that the government would focus on continuous reforms to make life easier for people and businesses alike. He added, 'In the coming months, we are going to implement several major reforms, and this Diwali, people will get a double bonus from GST reforms.' The draft proposal for GST reforms has already been sent to the states, with the Central government hoping for their swift cooperation. Modi urged the states to complete the process promptly so that the changes could be implemented in time for the Diwali festival. The primary objectives of these reforms are to simplify the GST process and adjust tax rates to benefit a larger section of the population. New GST slabs The Union government has proposed a revised GST system that would streamline the existing tax structure into only two main tax slabs—5% and 18%. The proposal suggests eliminating the current 12% and 28% tax slabs. Additionally, a special 40% tax slab has been proposed for luxury and harmful goods. The new system aims to reduce tax complexity and ensure more efficient compliance.

The Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion on Monday on the subject 'India's first astronaut aboard the International Space Station – Critical role of the space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047 – to mark astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's return to India. Shukla returned to India early Sunday to a rousing welcome by a large number of people waving the tricolour and beating drums at the airport here to celebrate his historic visit to the International Space Station (ISS). The Monsoon Session of Parliament will resume on Monday, 18 August after a brief break, but there are no signs of a thaw between the government and the Opposition over the demand for a debate on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Government pushes Bills even as adjournments continue
In yet another day full of adjournments, the Lok Sabha passed the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) after an extremely brief discussion. Introducing the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said, 'This Bill represents a decisive step towards positioning India as a global leader in maritime trade and governance. It is a progressive and advanced legislation, up to date with international maritime conventions and informed by the best practices of leading maritime nations.' 'The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, with 16 Parts and 325 clauses, modernises India's maritime legal framework by aligning with international conventions, enhancing safety at sea, improving emergency response, and ensuring environmental protection. It reduces compliance burdens, promotes Indian tonnage, and prioritises seafarer welfare and ship safety. The Bill aims to make India a globally respected maritime jurisdiction and unlock sustainable growth, investment, and innovation in the sector,' Mr. Sonowal added. The Bill introduces significant changes to India's maritime framework, using best practices of leading maritime jurisdictions like the U.K., Norway, and Singapore. It has reforms related to flexible vessel registration; easing ownership norms to attract foreign and NRI-led investment; enhanced safety and environmental standards aligned with international conventions to protect marine ecosystems; support for capital-deficient entrepreneurs and MSMEs through bareboat charter arrangements; expanded coastal security provisions in response to threats like 26/11; welfare measures for Indian seafarers, benefiting the 85% serving on foreign-flagged vessels; and a legal framework for maritime education to standardise over 160 training institutes across India. The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 is meant to be a progressive, future-ready legislation that replaces the Merchant Shipping Act of 1958. On the other hand, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, was passed in the Rajya Sabha. It adopts the Hague-Visby Rules, a globally accepted maritime standard also followed by countries like the United Kingdom, and repeals the century-old Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925. The legislation is expected to simplify maritime trade laws, reduce litigation risks, and enhance transparency and commercial efficiency in cargo movement by sea. All through this, Opposition members continued to protest in both the Houses, demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise undertaken by the Election Commission of India in Bihar. In the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government is open to all discussions suggested by the Opposition, but since the SIR issue is sub judice in the Supreme Court and is also an exercise by the ECI which is an autonomous body, it cannot be taken up for discussion in Parliament.
