Vietnamese craftsmen save Yamagata ‘flower hat' fest

YAMAGATA--Hats off to Vietnamese artisans who have come to the rescue of a long-established festival here that is famed for its beautiful dancers holding 'hanagasa' in their hands.
The Yamagata Hanagasa Festival is among the most renowned summer events in the northeastern Tohoku region of Japan.
Last summer, the organizer of the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival discovered that the traditional flower straw hats carried by the dancers were in short supply. Causing this grave 'incident' was the dearth of materials and craftsmen.
In the end, with the kind assistance of Vietnam, which has historically been skilled in making straw hats, the Japanese festival successfully overcame the crisis, at least temporarily.
Hanagasa, adorned with imitation flowers and small bells as its Japanese name meaning 'floral hats' suggests, constitutes the essential part of the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival.
Shouting energetically and twirling flower-decorated hats in their hands, some 10,000 dancers, led by floats, parade through the central area of Yamagata city in the annual ritual period in early August.
A total of 700,000 visitors attended the three-day festival in 2024, according to its organizer.
More than 90 percent of the hanagasa are made and sold by Shobido, a souvenir wholesaler and retailer based in Yamagata city.
Yoshiaki Henmi, 64, president of Shobido, said that his company sells 4,000 hats primarily to performers' groups every year. Despite this, Shobido had no choice but to decline orders for 1,000 hanagasa last year.

The hanagasa shortage in 2024 was attributed to not only underdeveloped sedge--the grass-like material used for the floral headwear--but also the lack of successors capable of weaving hanagasa.
Sedge in Yamagata Prefecture is cultured mainly in Yamagata city alongside Iide and Obanazawa.
The plant did not grow thick due to high temperatures and dry weather over the past few years. Thinner sedge stalks required more stems to complete each hat, reportedly resulting in a plunge in hanagasa output.
Aside from this, hanagasa artisans in areas like the Nakatsugawa district of Iide, where the old-style hat is aggressively crafted by hand by farmers for earning money on the side in the off-season, are becoming increasingly elderly.
About 15 individuals were engaged in hanagasa production in Nakatsugawa 10 years ago. Now, only five women in their 70s to 90s continue to make the headgear, marking a sharp decline in the number of makers.
In the peak period, as many as 10,000 hanagasa were shipped annually from Nakatsugawa. The district has delivered 2,000 pieces in the face of the challenging situation in recent years.
A dedicated training program was organized to nurture and develop younger craftsmen. However, the workshop was reportedly discontinued shortly thereafter.
Last summer, 2,000 hats were barely completed. An additional 1,000 pieces were prepared by releasing stockpiled hanagasa and applying floral-printed surfaces to their frames.
Still, the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival found itself short of 1,000 hanagasa. As a result, performer groups and individual dancers were encouraged to share floral hats in an effort to hold the event as usual.
After the festival, Henmi therefore decided to secure a 'new procurement source.'
'We must preserve the representative summer festival of Yamagata,' Henmi recalled thinking at the time.
Henmi contacted the Yamagata commerce information center of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) through the mediation of Yamagata city.
Kenji Koga, 44, director of the center, aka JETRO Yamagata, had, incidentally, been stationed at the JETRO's Hanoi office in Vietnam for three and a half years. His wife, Tran, 37, is from Vietnam, too.
After being consulted by Henmi, Koga quickly had an idea in his mind: importing the 'non la' cone-shaped headwear, which is worn to block the harsh sunlight in Vietnam, might work. The hat, commonly donned in the agriculture-rich country, resembles Japan's hanagasa in appearance.
Koga suggested that substitutes for hanagasa 'could be made in Vietnam,' advising that Henmi purchase flower hats from makers in the country.
Koga enlisted the help of an acquaintance in Vietnam for the plan at the same time. He likewise won his spouse's cooperation to embark on expanding the supply chain for the sake of the Yamagata festival.
The project was further buoyed by the popularity of the 1980s Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) TV drama 'Oshin' in Vietnam, which was filmed in Yamagata, to enhance the Vietnamese affinity for the Japanese prefecture.
Zai Tay village in the outskirts of Hanoi was specifically selected because 200 residents there produce 80,000 non la hats each year. The village mayor agreed to 'assist in Japan's hanagasa making given their difficulty' in response.
Both the Japanese and Vietnamese sides discussed the issue numerous times via video conferences.
Toward the end of last year, Koga and Henmi left for Vietnam. They spent three days at the village mayor's home so they could provide guidance on the weaving method for hanagasa.
INTERVENTION SAVES THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL
Vietnamese craftspeople promptly created a prototype hanagasa by combining palm leaves and bamboo bark, achieving strength and flexibility simultaneously. Seeing that, Henmi became confident about the plan's success.
'I was stunned by their adeptness, though the materials and techniques used were different from ours,' said Henmi. 'I felt that simply fine-tuning the details would lead to the completion of a quality hat.'
Koga was similarly satisfied with the outcome.
'I covered all the costs of the business trip to attend meetings on my own, beyond my official duties at JETRO,' Koga said. 'It was a valuable experience for me, as a Yamagata citizen, to be able to think of and contribute to the conservation of the festival, taking full advantage of my personal connections.'
Henmi placed an order for Zai Tay village for a total of 1,500 hanagasa in two sizes--33 centimeters and 48 cm in diameter, respectively--in late January of this year. They are expected to arrive in Yamagata by the end of May, with finished hanagasa inspected by Koga during his visit to Vietnam in late April.
Koga expressed high expectations for the two nations' mutual relationship in the future.
'I believe it will be best for Japan and Vietnam if our initiative this time deepens the bonds between Vietnam and Yamagata,' Koga said.
Henmi made a courtesy call to Yamagata Mayor Takahiro Sato in February.
'I have heard about the shortage of hats from citizens, so it is delightful for all relevant parties to come together with full force to start on a solution on an international scale,' Sato said about the hanagasa prototype presented to him. 'I am looking forward to seeing hats from Vietnam add color to the festivity.'
Whereas the envisioned delivery from Vietnam will likely allow the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival to avoid a critical situation for some time, the lack of hanagasa producers remains unresolved.
Offers have come from nearby Iwate and Miyagi prefectures to make up for the latest scarcity of hanagasa.
'We will maintain our deal with Vietnam for the time being, while fostering hat weavers in Japan in earnest,' Henmi said.
The iconic scene of performers dancing in Yamagata while holding up made-in-Vietnam hanagasa will soon be seen this summer.

The bug has been a key part of Japanese culture from the Heian era classic 'The Tale of Genji' to popular modern-day manga and animation like 'Mushishi,' featuring insect-like supernatural creatures. Japanese people appreciate the glitter of fireflies let loose in the garden or the gentle chirping of crickets kept in a little cage. You can feed the bug pets watermelon, but special jelly pet food for bugs is also available at stores. Naturally, bugs are on sale as well, with the more esoteric ones selling for 20,000 yen ($133). Here, crawly and buzzing critters are not just relegated to the scientific realm of the entomologist working on a taxidermy of pinned butterflies. Celebrities boast about their fascination with bug-hunting as their hobbies just like a Western movie star might talk about his yacht or golf score. The bug as companion is an essential part of what's observed, enjoyed and cared for in everyday life, reflecting a deeply rooted celebration of humankind's oneness with nature. 'They are so tiny. If you catch and study them, you're sure to discover something new,' says Munetoshi Maruyama, professor of bioenvironmental sciences at Kyushu University, whose fascination with bugs began as a child, like many Japanese. 'They are so beautiful in shape and form.' One thrill that comes from studying insects is discovering a new species, simply because there are more than 1.2 million known kinds of insects, far more than mammals, which translates to a lot of undiscovered ones, said Maruyama, who has discovered 250 new insect species himself and shrugs that off as a relatively small number. Japan differs from much of the West in encouraging interaction with bugs from childhood, with lots of books written for children, as well as classes and tours. 'In Japan, kids love bugs. You can even buy a net at a convenience store,' he said. 'It's fantastic that bugs can serve as a doorway to science.' The fact some insects go through metamorphoses, transforming from a larva to a butterfly, for instance, adds to the excitement, allowing kids to observe the stages of a life span, Maruyama said. Tracing the movement of bugs can be a way to study global warming, too, while so-called 'social insects,' like bees and ants show intelligence in how they communicate, remember routes to find their way back to their nests or burrow elaborate underground paths as colonies. Because bugs carry out important functions in the ecosystem, such as pollinating crops and becoming food for birds and other wildlife, human life isn't ultimately sustainable if all bugs were to disappear from earth. The love affair with bugs was clear at an exhibit in Tokyo, aptly called 'The Great Insect Exhibition,' running through the end of this month at the Sky Tree Tower, where crowds of children gathered around trees inside indoor cages so they could observe and touch the various beetles. One kind of rhinoceros beetle known as Hercules, which originated in the Caribbean but is now also found in Japan, is reputed to be the biggest beetle on record, although it's just several inches in length. Its back coat is a shiny khaki color, though such shades change depending on the season. The other parts, like its horn and delicate but spiky legs, are dark. 'We want the kids to feel the emotions and joy of actually touching the insects here. That's really positive for the workings of a child's brain,' said Toyoji Suzuki, one of the event's organizers, who insisted everyone, including adults, touch the bottom of the beetles' horns and wings to feel how surprisingly soft and fluffy they are. Four-year-old Asahi Yamauchi, who was at the exhibit with his grandmother and getting his photo taken inside a special installation that made it look like he was inside a beetle, loves bugs as much as he loves dinosaurs and has what he called a cute beetle as a pet at home. 'My friend had one so I wanted one,' he said.

We try to recreate an unlikely favorite popsicle treat of years past by turning corn soup into an icy dessert. Our Japanese-language foodie reporter Natsuno Futon was recently reminiscing about Garigari-kun's rich corn potage-flavored ice popsicle bars. Initially sold in September 2012, she remembers being shocked at how good they were, despite her initial apprehensions about the combination of creamy corn soup and frozen treat. Since they're not on sale at the moment, she came up with a creative idea to try making corn potage-flavored kakigori (shaved ice) at home using Riken Vitamin's 'Just-Dilute-It Corn Soup' (298 yen [US$2.02]) and her personal kakigori maker. This soup base comes in the form of a concentrated liquid to which you just need to add either hot or cold water depending on your mood. Natsuno personally prefers adding milk for the richest, creamiest taste, especially now that it's mid-summer. ▼ Soy milk is another possibility. OK, on to the shaved ice experiment. Following the instructions on the package, Natsuno diluted the soup concentrate with water in a 1:10 ratio and mixed it well. She poured the liquid into her kakigori maker's special container and put it in the freezer to chill overnight. The next day, it was frozen solid and ready to go. It looked like some of the soup base had settled on the bottom, but it wasn't anything too drastic. Worst case scenario, she could always mix the finished shaved ice to more evenly distribute the flavor. She popped the frozen block into the device, flipped the on switch… …and watched as corn soup-flavored shaved ice flakes began to magically appear before her eyes! She decided to display the very last pieces of the frozen soup block as stylish accents in her bowl, and then voila–it was ready to sample. Natsuno was both anxious and excited about its taste as she raised the first spoonful to her mouth. Thankfully, it tasted almost exactly like the Garigari-kun corn potage-flavored popsicles of her memory–a perfect harmony of salty, sweet, and corn flavors. Sure, there were minute differences in the taste, texture, and smell, but she was pretty darn pleased with how accurately it had turned out. She fed it to some members of her family who also agreed that it was a faithful recreation. Whether the flavor was actually delicious or not, however, was a slightly different story, and she received mixed reactions. Some thought that it tasted more like a palate cleanser at a fancy restaurant than something they would want to eat on its own. ▼ Which is fine in her book because it means more for her! Of course, the good news is that if corn soup shaved ice isn't to your taste, you can always thaw the ice and eat it as soup instead. Natsuno wants to express her gratitude to the developers of the Garigari-kun corn potage-flavored popsicles for creating the original winning summer flavor combination from unlikely ingredients. While she can't eat that original product at the moment, she's pleased to have found a faithful substitution for whenever she starts craving that creamy, corny flavor. Lastly, Natsuno would like to clarify one point with readers–namely, that she will NOT be making shaved ice out of Riken Vitamin's 'Just-Dilute-It Scallop Chowder' soup concentrate in the same product series. Even she's not quite that adventurous. The latest example of showcasing such talent came from an unexpected source earlier this week: the official Twitter account of Godiva Japan. With the symbol X often being used to denote crossovers in Japanese media, it was clear that the chocolatier was teasing a collaboration of some sort, while still being coy about who their partner was. The mystery wasn't hard for to solve for fans of a certain storied manga creator team, who immediately recognized the outlines of Mokona, and so were able to deduce that Godiva is teaming up with… …Clamp, the four-woman creative collective behind such series as "Cardcaptor Sakura," "xxxHolic" and "Magic Knight Rayearth." Image: Godiva Japan The full details of the collaboration won't be announced until next month, but Godiva has at least said that it will involve a brand-new set of illustrations of Clamp characters from across their collected works, including "Cardcaptor Sakura's" Sakura and Tomoyo, "xxxHolic's" Yuko and Kimihiro, and even "Chobits'" Chi. Though Godiva hasn't said exactly what the tie-up is going to entail, the most likely scenario is that the Clamp artwork will grace special sets of chocolates, likely packaged in tins or boxes that also feature the illustrations in order to give fans something to enjoy even after they've had their dessert. There's also a chance that some exclusive merch, like the Pikmin pouches that were part of Godiva's collaboration with Nintendo earlier this year, could be in the mix. As for the Clamp characters all being drawn in a super-deformed style rather than their more intricate standard character models, trying to apply such high-line-count illustrations to space on top of a chocolate would probably blur the defining details, and Clamp has long had a penchant for suddenly giving their characters the SD treatment for comedic purposes, with the "Magic Knight Rayearth" TV anime being particularly fond of such lighthearted visual punctuation of its gags. Whatever shape the Godiva x Clamp collaboration ends up taking on, the associated items are scheduled to go on sale October 1, so fans will at least have something to snack on as they wait for more info about that new "Rayearth" anime.
