Road dubbed Britain's wonkiest set to reopen

Yahoo01-04-2025
A road dubbed Britain's wonkiest is set to reopen three years after it was ripped up by a major landslip.
The B4069 at Lyneham Banks, Wiltshire, was closed in February 2022, but is set to reopen on Wednesday.
The work, which included constructing a 108m-long retaining wall and cost £5m, was completed by Octavius on behalf of Wiltshire Council.
Wiltshire councillor Alison Bucknell said: "It has been a long, slow journey to get to where we are today."

During the work, the slope above and beyond the roadway was regraded, with drainage systems also installed beneath the new carriageway and on the new hillside.
"I would like to pay tribute to all of the officers and contractors who have worked on this project, and to the residents and businesses who have had to put up with a huge amount of inconvenience," Ms Bucknell added.
She said while residents have asked for an official opening, there will be "no balloons, no fanfare, no drumroll".
"The most important thing is that we can get our lives back to "normal" as soon as possible," she said.
She said the whole situation had been "simply horrendous".
Before its closure, the road was used by more than 5,000 vehicles a day.

Tesla owners gut-punched after receiving unexpected notice from insurance company: 'Mind you, zero accidents in my life'

Tesla's reduced production of its Cybertruck is having a ripple effect on owners, some of whom say insurance companies are now canceling policies for the vehicle. What's happening? Once one of the world's most-hyped vehicles, sales and production numbers for Tesla's Cybertruck have fallen sharply. In the second quarter of this year, the company sold just 4,306 Cybertrucks, a drop of more than 50% over the same period in 2024. Now, Torque News reported, some insurance companies are using those numbers to cancel their coverage of the all-electric truck. One Illinois resident wrote in a Cybertruck owners' Facebook group that his Cybertruck would need to be removed from his policy. He shared a letter written by Hanover Insurance, which said the company is "unable to adequately rate and underwrite the vehicle" because of its limited production and that "its design represents a unique challenge, as it poses an extraordinary expense for repair or replacement under comprehensive or collision coverage." The only way his overall policy could avoid cancellation, the company wrote, was to remove the Cybertruck from it. "Mind you," he wrote, "zero accidents in my life." Why are Cybertruck issues concerning? This development is the latest piece of troubling news surrounding the Cybertruck — and, really, Tesla's overall sales this year. As Torque News noted, the company already has the capacity to produce 130,000 Cybertrucks per year, and CEO Elon Musk previously suggested Tesla would make up to 250,000 of the vehicles each year. But based on its second-quarter numbers, the company would be on pace to produce fewer than 20,000 Cybertrucks annually. In that quarter, Cybertruck sales were not only beaten by those of the Ford F-150 Lightning but also by the Hummer EV. And the problem wasn't limited to the Cybertruck, as Tesla's overall sales fell 12.6% from the previous year. Are you planning to buy a new car in the next two to three years? No way Maybe Probably Definitely Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. As the biggest electric-vehicle company, any negative development for Tesla could potentially make people think twice before switching to an EV, which could keep more high-polluting, dirty energy-burning cars on the road instead. What can I do about this? On the Facebook group, some other Cybertruck owners said they also received cancellation notices from Hanover Insurance but had success finding policies with other companies, namely Farmers Insurance. But no matter what make or model it is, switching from a gas-powered vehicle to an EV is one of the best choices you can make for our environment. And with the $7,500 federal EV tax credit ending Sept. 30, thanks to the passage of the "Big Beautiful Bill," now may be the perfect time to make that switch. Watch: Auto worker's lost wallet found under hood 11 years later

Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A mechanic working on a 2015 Ford Edge brought into his Minnesota shop made a startling discovery under the hood: a wallet that had been lost by a Michigan Ford plant worker 11 years earlier. Richard Guilford, who is now retired, said he remembers the day he lost his wallet while working on vehicles that had been shipped to the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne after coming off the assembly line in Chicago with electrical issues. "I never wore sweatpants to work, but I did that day," he told KARE-TV. "And I had my wallet in my shirt pocket." Guilford and his team searched for the missing wallet, but there were 2,000 vehicles on the floor and they eventually had to give up. He said the wallet contained his driver's license, his Ford Motor Co. ID, $15 in cash and $250 worth of Cabela's sporting goods gift cards he had intended to use to buy Christmas presents for his kids. The wallet's final fate remained a mystery for 11 years, until Chad Volk, owner of LC Car Care in Crystal Lake, Minn., was working on a 2015 Ford Edge brought in to have its cooling fans replaced. Volk said he was attempting to put the air box back into place under the hood, but it wouldn't fit right. He removed it again and found Guilford's leather wallet sitting on top of the transmission. "I was surprised. You find stuff all the time, usually tools," Volk told the Detroit Free Press. "I looked through it and I see a Ford Motor Co. badge. I thought, 'I'm going to try finding this guy to see if I can get it back to him.'" Volk was quickly able to find and contact Guilford on Facebook, and the wallet was in the mail the next day. Volk said the Edge had about 150,000 miles on it when it came to his shop. "It's well-traveled currency," Guilford joked of the $15 cash, which was still safe inside the wallet, along with the rest of its contents. Guilford said Cabela's has agreed to issue him new gift cards, so he can keep his preserved wallet intact as a keepsake. "Some things in it were hot and crisp, think of how hot that car got," Guilford said. "It doesn't look like it ever got wet, just hot. That little corner kept [the wallet] completely dry and completely preserved. I want the wallet to stay as it is. It is a memento."
