Veils of Bollywood celebrates Indian heritage in Montreal
A group of Montrealers is spotlighting Asian heritage through Bollywood dance.
It started as a passion for 35-year-old Rameez Karim and it's since become a key part of his life's work.
'I feel that dance is a really important tool to start conversations,' said Karim.
He first hit the dance floor when he was five.
A flare for creative style and storytelling led the Montrealer to performances at community events and professional companies.
Karim founded his own dance company, Veils of Bollywood, in 2019.
'We are really trying to push the boundaries of different artforms coming together, bridging different cultures together, having this type of intercultural exchange, which I find is really, really important - especially at a time like now,' said Karim.

In the middle of Asian Heritage Month, he says India is an essential part of Asia that is sometimes forgotten.
Karim welcomes each rehearsal at Studio Bizz as a moment to celebrate his heritage with the community.
One treasured moment is the 'namaskaram' salutation, which he performs with his dancers at the beginning and end of each practice.
'At one point we touch the ground because Indian dance is very much connected to the earth and to nature,' he said. 'So because we dance barefoot, we're striking the ground with our feet and we are conscious of this and we're asking the planet, actually if we can dance on her.'
Simran Kaur, 33, has been dancing with Veils of Bollywood since day one. For her, the idea of asking for permission has another significance.
'It's really important because a lot of the women in my culture, in my background, didn't have the permission and the privilege to be able to dance this freely, this liberated,' she said. 'It's not just a dance for me, but it's a way to honor all of those women and let them come and dance through me as a as a celebration, as a moment of joy.'

There's much joy to be had as the troupe of twelve prepares for a residency at Maison de la Culture in July.
They hope their show, 'Dreams of Bollywood,' will help turn up the music on the cultural conversation.

Ukrainian heritage on display at Poltava Ukrainian Pavilion during Mosaic festival

(Gareth Dillistone / CTV News) It was a true display of Ukrainian culture showcased at the first night of the Poltava Ukrainian Pavillion at the Regina Performing Arts Centre The pavilion is part of the 2025 Mosaic Multicultural Festival. Members of the Poltava School of Dance, along with an ensemble and live orchestra, wowed a crowed of attendees with traditional performances. 'There are approximately 35 dancers. Eight to 10 boys and a lot of girls,' said Dion Tchorzewski, the Ambassador of the Poltava Ukrainian Pavilion. 'Our orchestra was actually founded in 1921. We have an orchestra with our organization for over 100 years and it's continued from there,' he explained. Attendees also had a chance to taste some traditional Ukrainian food. 'People come for our food. We make all our own perogies. We start early in the year and we make them every couple of weeks. Thousands at a time. We have our cabbage rolls, some amazing desserts,' Tchorzewski added. Tchorzewski said the festival is great way for residents of Regina to become immersed in the Ukrainian culture. 'I'm just happy to have everybody come, experience the culture with us. Everybody is welcome in Poltava.' One attendee echoed that sentiment. 'I like learning the new culture. I want to try new food. I like doing that, but it's just a good way to bring my culture to Regina and just experience new things,' explained Keyera Santbergen-Newstead. The Poltava Ukrainian Pavilion will be at the Regina Performing Arts Centre all weekend long with performances running every hour.

Do West Fest takes over stretch of west end street in Toronto
A festival that bills itself as "Toronto's start to the summer" has taken over a stretch of a major west end street this weekend. Now in its 12th year, Do West Fest celebrates the rich culture of the city's Little Portugal neighbourhood. Sixteen blocks are closed to traffic across Dundas Street W. between Lansdowne Avenue and Shaw Street. The streets are now filled with food trucks and local vendors instead of cars. Organizers have set up three music stages — Lulaworld, Community and Transmit Presents — throughout the festival. "All of them bring a bit of a different flavor," Kristyn Gelfand, the event's lead producer told CBC Toronto on Friday. "Lulaworld has bands from as far away as Ecuador and Brazil. The Community Stage is programmed hyper-locally, so all the artists on that stage have a direct connection to this neighbourhood, whether they live or work or rehearse in this right here on Dundas," Gelfand said.. "And then [there's] the Transmit Stage, which brings in the best of Canadian indie rock from all across the country." The festival will wrap up at 6 pm. on Saturday, but road closures on Dundas Street W. will stay in effect until midnight.
