Indonesians rescued from trafficking attempt to Malaysia

JAKARTA - Police in Indonesia's North Sumatra province have foiled an attempt to traffic 26 undocumented workers to Malaysia and arrested three suspected traffickers, authorities said.
The group, comprising 18 men and eight women, was rescued in a raid last Friday by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) in Deli Serdang.
"The three suspects will be detained for the next 20 days," the department's director Commissioner Sumaryono said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations revealed the workers had been promised employment as domestic helpers, factory workers and plantation labourers, with a promised monthly wage of RM1,500 (around 5.7 million rupiah).
The migrants hailed from several provinces, including 12 from East Nusa Tenggara, seven from Aceh, two each from West Nusa Tenggara and North Sumatra, and one each from Central Java, East Java and Riau.
"Each of them paid five million rupiah to the syndicate. The plan was to smuggle them to Malaysia by barge," Sumaryono said.
Before their planned departure, the group had been temporarily housed in Tumpatan village, Batang Kuis sub-district, after arriving from their home regions.
The 26 individuals have since been handed over to the North Sumatra branch of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP3MI).
The three suspects are being investigated under Indonesia's 2007 anti-human trafficking law and the 2017 law on migrant worker protection, and face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. - BERNAMA

The court fixed bail at RM7,000 with one surety and allowed the additional conditions requested by the prosecution. Norazlin fixed Oct 13 for next mention.

Former Private Teacher Pleads Not Guilty To Sending False Statement
SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- A former private teacher pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of making and initiating the transmission of false statement over a case of insulting the Prime Minister. S. Chandrasegaran, 46, was charged with using TikTok to knowingly, make and initiate the transmission of false statements with the intention of disparaging a person at 1.36 pm, Dec 30, 2024. The transmission was later seen and heard at 6.30 pm, the same day (Dec 30, 2024) at a restaurant in Bandar Sunway, Petaling near here. He was charged with committing an offence under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and is punishable under Section 233(3) of the same act. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both and may be further fined RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal proposed a bail of RM30,000 with additional conditions, namely reporting to the nearest police station every month, surrendering his passport to the court and prohibiting him from interfering with prosecution witnesses throughout the trial. Lawyer Muhammad Nor Tamrin requested a reasonable amount of bail as the accused currently has no regular income after being confirmed to be permanently disabled and is suffering from throat cancer. 'He also has to support a wife and two children and there is no risk of absconding,' he said. Judge Norazlin Othman allowed bail of RM7,000 with a local guarantor and allowed additional conditions put forward by the prosecution and set the case for mention on Oct 13.

Five teens in Zara case escorted from court under tight security
KOTA KINABALIU: A police vehicle carrying five teenagers linked to the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir was seen leaving the Kota Kinabalu Court Complex here after proceedings at the Juvenile Court this morning. The vehicle was escorted under tight police security as it exited the court compound at 2.05pm before heading to an undisclosed location. The atmosphere outside the court complex remained under control with close monitoring by security forces. Earlier, the five teenagers who were brought before the Juvenile Court here this morning pleaded not guilty to charges of using insulting words against the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. The charges were made under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same act. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Azizah Mohamad said all the accused were granted bail of RM5,000 each with one surety, and a deposit of RM1,000. "There was no guilty plea, the mention date is Sept 25. Each accused was granted bail of RM5,000 with a RM1,000 deposit and one surety," she told reporters outside the court today. Based on the charges, all five accused had common intention in using insulting words against the late Zara Qairina at a school in Papar between 10pm and 11pm on July 15, 2025.
