Indore: Unidentified men broke into a house owned by an education department official in Anand Nagar area and made away with cash and jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh. The house belonged to ADPC Sangeeta Sonawane, who was away with her family in Dhule, Maharashtra for a wedding ceremony.

The burglars broke the latch of main gate using a cutter and stole gold and silver jewellery from two rooms of the house. The incident came to light when the domestic help arrived in the morning to water plants and found the gate's lock broken. She immediately informed the family through a relative living in the neighbourhood. Sonawane and her family had left for Dhule on May 5 morning. The stolen items included 70 grams of gold, comprising two gold chains (12 grams each), a locket (4 grams), a mangalsutra (15 grams), three pairs of jhumkas (15 grams), tops, a bangle, two rings, four pairs of toe rings, and earrings. Additionally, the thieves took 30 silver coins and two pairs of anklets.The police are currently investigating the case. Police said they were checking CCTV footage of nearby areas to ascertain the identity of the accused. They were also in the process of recording statements of family members in the case. According to Rameshwar outpost police, the burglary took place on the night of May 8 and marks the third major theft in the city within a span of just one week. Earlier incidents included the theft of goods worth Rs 10 lakh from a govt school teacher's house in Laxminagar area, along with another burglary at a neighbouring residence.

Man held with Rs 3.9 lakh hydroponic ganja in Thane

Over ₹17k challans pending against Hyd police vehicles
At a time when citizens are turning traffic vigilantes, law keepers are found breaching regulations. As per a RTI filed by city-based traffic educator Lokendra Singh, a fleet of vehicles registered under the Director General of Police Telangana have accumulated 17,391 challans - some pending since 2017. Though the total challan amount stands at around Rs 68 lakh, the department might have to cough up a penalty of Rs 1.36 crore. This, as Section 210B of the MV Act, 2019, states that if an authority empowered to enforce the Motor Vehicles Act commits an offence, they are liable to a penalty twice the amount corresponding to that offence. These challans, issued to police vehicles with registration series TS 09 PA XXXX and TS 09 PC XXXX, are in use by senior police officials. Most of the violations are related to over-speeding. When TOI checked for details on the portal, it found that a majority of these police vehicles (Innova) had 10 to 15 challans each. City police issued more than 50 lakh challans in '24, collected over 46L Surprisingly, some vehicles had unpaid challans pending since 2018. For instance, one police vehicle TS 09 PA XX88 had 11 challans starting from Oct 2018 to April 2023. The total outstanding amount: 11,385 'Fines auto generated' "The majority of traffic fines against police vehicles are automatically generated by speed detection cameras that monitor vehicles exceeding speed limits. We will forward these fines to the respective officers and ask them to provide evidence justifying their speed violations," said Rahul Hegde BK, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Hyderabad commissionerate and public information officer, traffic branch. He added: "The fines will be withdrawn if we find that the vehicles were responding to emergency situations, conducting patrol duties, or were involved in VIP escorts." Lokendra Singh, a volunteer with Hyderabad City Security Council said such traffic violations set a bad example for the public. "When they see police personnel flouting regulations, it diminishes their trust in the system and leads them to question the necessity of following rules. I have also noticed that many police vehicle drivers often do not use seat belts while driving," said Singh. Over 50 lakh challans Hyderabad city police issued as many as 56.3 lakh challans in 2024, with most violations involving riding without helmets and driving on the wrong side. The authorities collected 46.6 lakh against these challans - 82% of the total amount.
