Judging by the comments online under the news about Kyalami's new 'Grade 1 FIA approval', it seems as though South Africans are convinced that we are set to host the grandest race of them all.
Just to be clear, the announcement made this week by Kyalami Circuit boss Toby Venter was about them taking a step closer to hosting a F1 race.
There is still a ton of work that needs to be done, and even after that costly work, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) can still close the door on South Africa's face.
So, nothing's really set in stone at this point, but Kyalami Circuit does appear to be the front-runner ahead of the Cape Town bid when it comes to hosting the race.

Kyalami's Grade 1 plans were approved by the FIA, meaning they were given the green light to upgrade their track to the highest possible standards in motorsport.
When complete, Kyalami can compare itself to the likes of Fuji Speedway in Japan, Hockenheimring in Germany and the Indianapolis Speedway in the United States.
Venter confirmed that the FIA had approved the plans to upgrade Kyalami to a Grade 1 race track. The 4.5km surface holds a Grade 2 licence. It is estimated that the upgrades will cost between R100 million and R180m.
'When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we made a commitment to restore it, not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across the African continent. The FIA's acceptance of our Grade 1 design is a major step forward in that journey,' Venter said on Wednesday.
Venter roped in UK-based motorsport engineering consultants Double Apex to help with their bid to host the race.
Clive Bowen, director of Double Apex, said the upgrades would take around three months to complete.
Bowen assured that these were 'light upgrades' to an already world-class facility. There are also plans to extend spectator areas.
The upgrades will primarily revolve around enhancing run-off areas, barrier systems, debris fencing, kerbs, and drainage.
No physical changes will be made to the circuit itself, and will remain the same from when Ayrton Senna drove his McLaren there back in the 1990s. What is a Grade 1 race track ?
A Grade 1 track is supposed to be longer than 3.5km, but no longer than 7km. The straights cannot exceed 2km.
Besides the hoard of safety measures that need to be adhered to, a Grade 1 track must also undergo annual inspections to ratify its status in the eyes of the FIA, and cough up a hefty fee in the process.
The type of cars being raced on the surface also affects the Grade of licence you need to have.
In the hybrid era that we currently find ourselves in, Formula 1 cars produce over 1,000 horsepower and weigh between 730kg and 760kg.
With a power to weight ratio at that level, F1 cars require a Grade 1 level track to race on.
If a Grade 1 licence is granted by the FIA, it is valid for a period of three years.

While the sharing of intellectual property in analysis of opposition is common in competitive rugby, the Barbarians game is friendlier than a normal Test match. That may be why De Allende was so forthcoming with his admission of sharing what he knows. Coaches will bring structure to the Barbarians The 87-capped Springbok centre said the pair had taught him much about identifying space and attacking plays over the years. 'It's going to be a challenge because Robbie and Atsushi like the guys to move the ball around. 'The challenge will be … they want a loose game. But I think Robbie and Atsushi will get them to move the ball around in a structured environment. They [the Barbarians] will get their structure right quite quickly.' De Allende said he and [Bok and Wild Knights] teammate Lood de Jager know the structure the two coaches encourage, and can pass that knowledge on. 'We don't know exactly what they will do, but we might have an idea of what they will try and bring,' he said.

Springboks' latest call-up: Who is Boan Venter?

Picture: Ross Parker/SNS Group via Getty Images Due to a mini prop crisis in the Springbok set-up, coach Rassie Erasmus called up little known Boan Venter at the weekend to join the squad for the next four matches. The Boks take on the Barbarians in their season opener in Cape Town next Saturday, followed by Tests against Italy (two) and Georgia, before they turn their attention to the Rugby Championship. With Steven Kisthoff retired and Frans Malherbe, Trevor Nyakane, Gerhard Steenekamp and Ntuthuko Mchunu injured, Erasmus hasn't got as many prop options at his disposal as he'd like. Ox Nche and Vincent Koch are the most experienced and fit props remaining in the squad, followed by Thomas du Toit, Wilco Louw and then the rookies, Neethling Fouche and Asenathi Ntlabakanye. Jan-Hendrik Wessels can also play prop. Venter adds to the options for Erasmus, though he and Du Toit will not be available for the Barbarians match next weekend, due to 'international regulations'. Both men play abroad, at Bath and Edinburgh respectively, and because the match next week falls outside the Test window, will only join the Bok squad sometime during next week. Here is what you need to know about the Boks' latest call-up. Who is Boan Venter though? He is a specialist loosehead prop, tipping the scales at 124kg and standing 1.87m tall. He was born in Kimberley and is now 28 years old. He matriculated at Hoërskool De Aar. The powerful prop made a name for himself as the Griquas' U18 Craven Week captain, while he also played for the SA Schools side in 2015. After school he joined Free State and played Varsity Cup rugby for Shimlas and then also featured for the Cheetahs. In 2017 he was part of the Junior Springbok training squad. In 2021, Venter joined Edinburgh. According to the Edinburgh Rugby website, Venter became the first prop to score a hat trick of tries for Edinburgh in the professional era, bagging a treble against Ospreys at Swansea Stadium in January 2022. 'Boan comes through the Cheetahs ranks and the junior structures in South Africa, and he has also been very consistent for Edinburgh. Why Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso chose Themba Zwane in Fifa Club World Cup opener

Photo: AFP Image: AFP Following Mamelodi Sundowns' 1-0 win over Ulsan HD in their Fifa Club World Cup opener this week, coach Miguel Cardoso went to great lengths to explain the inclusion of veteran playmaker Themba Zwane in the starting XI. This was the first time that Zwane had started a match since the Portuguese mentor Cardoso arrived at Sundowns. For the greater part of Cardoso's stewardship at the Brazilians, Zwane was recovering from an injury sustained in October 2024 while on Bafana Bafana duty. The national team stalwart returned to action in April 2025, four months after Cardoso's appointment in mid-December last year. There was a massive outcry from Sundowns' supporters after Cardoso left the 35-year-old Zwane on the bench in both legs of the CAF Champions League final, which they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids three weeks ago. There were suggestions that Zwane was the missing creative force in the Masandawana midfield that could have unlocked the North African side's defence. Zwane's absence from that high-stakes encounter raised a chorus of questions about his future role in the squad, and since then, Cardoso has been repeatedly asked questions about his plans for the fan favourite, affectionately known as 'Mshishi'. This subject again came to the fore in Florida on Tuesday evening during the post-match press conference. When the veteran playmaker Zwane was named in the run-on XI, it seemed Cardoso had finally yielded to fan pressure. 'It seems people didn't understand that Themba came from an injury on a process of growth since the moment he re-entered the team and trained fully," said Cardoso. 'It's important to give him the right opportunity so that he can perform. 'There's no influence from the past. The pressure on me comes from inside the club, and is from my board and my players. 'That's the pressure a coach will have when he settles into a career like mine. 'What happened is that Themba made a hell of a two-week preparation, and that is the respect we need to have. People spoke a lot about that (Zwane's lack of playing time). "I had no problems putting him in, even having the risk of letting people think I'm putting him in because of pressure." It seemed that Zwane's impressive two-week preparation leading up to the game was the deciding factor that led Cardoso to choose him. Cardoso's faith in Zwane paid off, as his inclusion not only silenced critics, but also showcased the squad's depth and tactical flexibility in the win against Ulsan HD. Coupled with the balance Zwane brought in midfield, it underlined why his experience and skill are indispensable to Sundowns' ambitions on the world stage. Cardoso will hope that Zwane can again be an influential figure in their next Club World Cup fixture, against German giants Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (6pm SA time kick-off) at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati.
