Hazardous morning commute in Twin Cities after overnight snow
WCCO has issued a NEXT Drive Alert due to the conditions, which will affect the morning commute. A NEXT Weather Alert is also in place.
According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, as of 5:55 a.m. most Twin Cities roads were completely covered. Many roads in southwestern Minnesota are closed, and travel is not advised in most of south central Minnesota. Roads are partially covered in central Minnesota, while the northern part of the state is mostly clear.
MnDOT also reported at least two dozen crashes and spinouts in the metro alone. In Inver Grove Heights, a Minnesota State Patrol trooper's vehicle was hit. MnDOT said the trooper is OK.
Metro Transit has suspended all bus service due to road conditions, as has the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority.
The snow should start to slow by the morning commute, then wrap up around mid-morning.
The snowstorm also caused hundreds of school closures and delays, including a full closure for the Anoka-Hennepin Public School District and virtual learning days for Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Air quality in Minneapolis ranks 2nd worst in the world Friday morning, with alerts stretching another day
The state of Minnesota is entering another in a long string of summer days marred by air quality alerts. Poor air quality will continue through Saturday with lingering wildfire smoke from Canada. WCCO meteorologist Joseph Dames says that the upside is that unseasonably pleasant temperatures have moved in, and will stick around, with highs in the 70s and low humidity. That may be small consolation, as the air quality alert will remain in effect through 5 p.m. on Saturday, with smoke from Canadian wildfires keeping air quality index levels in the unhealthy categories. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has the latest AQI forecasts on its website. According to IQAir, Minneapolis' air quality at the start of the Friday workday ranked as the second-worst among the world's major cities on Thursday afternoon. Only Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo had worse AQI levels. This is one of the longest air quality alerts on record, tying with those issued for St. Louis County during the Greenwood fire in 2021, according to the agency. Dames says our nights remain cool, with lows in the 50s and some patchy morning fog. A few weak systems pass to our west early next week, with low rain chances limited to far western Minnesota. Expect a llight warmup and increased humidity possible by the end of next week, with another chance for rain.

Severe storms Thursday in Philadelphia region to bring heavy rain, damaging winds. Here's the forecast.
Thursday will bring the fourth day in a row with a NEXT Weather Alert, though it will be due to storms and flooding, not necessarily the heat. It will be hot, but it won't be as hot as the previous days. Those showers and storms will develop ahead of an approaching cold front that will put an end to this heat wave and usher in much cooler air by Friday. They will also be bringing flooding rain and the chance for a severe storm or two, mainly in the form of damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center has our area in a moderate risk for flooding, which is a 3 out of 4 on the risk scale. The primary time frame for the greatest impacts will be 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a heavy focus near the evening commute. On Friday, the high temps will likely only top out in the mid-low 70s, which is much closer to the record for the coldest high temp (69 degrees) than the normal high in the upper 80s. Friday is also the start of August and the start of an extended cooler stretch of air bringing relief from the heat through the first week of the month. Highs Friday and into the weekend will be in the upper 70s to low 80s, with morning low temps in the mid-low 60s. In fact, many places Sunday morning will likely be in the 50s. Heat wave continues Wednesday before storms, cooler air arrive later this week. Here's the weather forecast.
Tuesday brought record-setting heat around parts of the Philadelphia area, and PHL recorded a 98-degree high temp, tying the record set in 2002, and we will likely do it again on Wednesday! But what will it feel like? Along with the increasing temperatures, the humidity will also be on the rise, making it feel like anywhere between 100-105 degrees, perhaps even hotter in spots at times. When temperatures climb this high, it can be dangerous for anyone without adequate ways to stay cool and hydrated. As a result, the NEXT Weather Team has issued a NEXT Weather Alert through Wednesday evening. A few storms may fire up late Wednesday, but there is a much greater chance of storms by Thursday.
