Scientists believe two meteorites found in the Sahara Desert in 2023 may have come from Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. If confirmed, these would be the first meteorites ever found from Mercury.
Mercury is hard to study because it is very close to the Sun. Only two spacecraft, Mariner 10 and MESSENGER, have visited it so far. A third, BepiColombo, will reach there in 2026.
From Mars and the Moon, over 1,100 meteorites have reached Earth. However, Mercury has never been confirmed as a source.
Researchers now think Mercury, despite its size, might be able to send rock fragments into Space during asteroid impacts. Planets like Venus, although closer to Earth, may not be able to do the same due to their strong gravity and thick atmosphere.
If proven true, these new meteorites could help scientists better understand Mercury's surface.
'Based on the amount of lunar and Martian meteorites, we should have around 10 Mercury meteorites, according to dynamical modelling,' CNN quoted researcher Ben Rider-Stokes.
'However, Mercury is a lot closer to the sun, so anything that's ejected off Mercury also has to escape the sun's gravity to get to us. It is dynamically possible, just a lot harder. No one has confidently identified a meteorite from Mercury as of yet,' he added.
If confirmed to be from Mercury, meteorites NWA 15915 and KG 022 could help scientists learn more about the planet. However, there are doubts as the rocks seem 500 million years older than Mercury's surface.
Rider-Stokes, anyway, believes this mismatch may be due to wrong estimates. Until samples are brought from Mercury or a visit to the planet, proving their origin remains very difficult.
In 2012, a meteorite named NWA 7325, found in Morocco, was thought to be from Mercury. It excited scientists. Nevertheless, later tests showed it had too much chrome, which didn't match Mercury's known surface.
Another group of meteorites, called aubrites, found earlier in France, were also believed to be from Mercury's inner layer. However, their chemical makeup didn't match Mercury's surface.
These new meteorites found in the Sahara may, however, truly be from Mercury. These rocks have minerals like olivine and pyroxene, which match findings from NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft. The samples also showed no iron, which fits scientists' understanding of Mercury's surface.

Washington: The Trump administration on Monday took another step to make it harder to find major, legally mandated scientific assessments of how climate change is endangering the nation and its people. Earlier this month, the official government websites that hosted the authoritative, peer-reviewed national climate assessments went dark. Such sites tell state and local governments and the public what to expect in their backyards from a warming world and how best to adapt to it. At the time, the White House said NASA would house the reports to comply with a 1990 law that requires the reports, which the space agency said it planned to do. But on Monday, NASA announced that it aborted those plans. "The USGCRP (the government agency that oversees and used to host the report) met its statutory requirements by presenting its reports to Congress. NASA has no legal obligations to host data," NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens said in an email. That means no data from the assessment or the government science office that coordinated the work will be on NASA, she said. On July 3, NASA put out a statement that said, "All preexisting reports will be hosted on the NASA website, ensuring continuity of reporting." "This document was written for the American people, paid for by the taxpayers, and it contains vital information we need to keep ourselves safe in a changing climate, as the disasters that continue to mount demonstrate so tragically and clearly," said Texas Tech climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. She is chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy and co-author of several past national climate assessments. Copies of past reports are still squirreled away in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's library and the latest report and its interactive atlas can be seen here. Former Obama White House science adviser and climate scientist John Holdren accused the administration of outright lying and long intended to censor or bury the reports. "The new stance is classic Trump administration misdirection," Holdren said. "In this instance, the administration offers a modest consolation to quell initial outrage over the closure of the site and the disappearance of the National Climate Assessments. Then, two weeks later, they snatch away the consolation with no apology." "They simply don't want the public to see the meticulously assembled and scientifically validated information about what climate change is already doing to our farms, forests, and fisheries, as well as to storms, floods, wildfires, and coast property - and about how all those damages will grow in the absence of concerted remedial action," Holdren said in an email. That's why it's important that state and local governments and every day people see these reports, Holdren said. He said they are written in a way that is "useful to people who need to understand what climate change is doing and will do to THEM, their loved ones, their property and their environment." "Trump doesn't want people to know," Holdren wrote. The most recent report, issued in 2023, found that climate change is affecting people's security, health and livelihoods in every corner of the country in different ways, with minority communities, particularly Native Americans, often disproportionately at risk.

Chennai, July 15 (UNI) NASA tonight announced that the Axiom Mission-4 crew successfully completed their ISS Expedition conductng 73 studies on space effects on heart and nervous system. Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) splashed down in the Pacific Ocean at 2:31 a.m. PDT Tuesday ending a 20-day spaceflight that saw the private astronauts perform critical microgravity research aboard the International Space Station. Veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, who has accumulated 695 days in space over five missions, led Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla and Mission Specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu back to Earth aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. Back on the orbital outpost, the Expedition 73 crew kicked off several days of human research activities starting with exploring how the human heart and nervous system adapt to weightlessness. NASA Flight Engineers Jonny Kim and Anne McClain joined each other in the Columbus laboratory module on Tuesday for heart scans using the Ultrasound 2 device to understand how living in space affects blood flow. McClain then partnered with NASA Flight Engineer Nichole Ayers and studied how an astronaut's nervous system, or sense of balance, adjusts to microgravity. McClain wore virtual reality goggles and responded to visual stimuli as Ayers monitored and operated the hardware with assistance from doctors on the ground in real time. Both studies are part of the CIPHER suite of 14 human research experiments. Kim later assisted station Commander Takuya Onishi of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) as he worked in the Tranquility module for upcoming electrical and life support maintenance. The duo removed a variety of exercise racks and orbital plumbing components to access electrical hardware for maintenance and begin installing a new catalytic reactor. Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexey Zubritskiy and Kirill Peskov continued unpacking cargo from inside the Progress 92 resupply ship that delivered about three tons of food, fuel, and supplies to the Expedition 73 crew on July 5. Veteran cosmonaut Sergey Ryzhikov spent his day checking electronics gear and servicing space physics research equipment. The docked Progress 91 cargo craft will fire its engines on Wednesday for several minutes boosting the station's orbit to the correct altitude for the arrival of the SpaceX Crew-11 mission. Crew-11 is targeted to launch no earlier than 12:09 p.m. EDT on July 31 aboard the Dragon spacecraft for a docking on Aug. 2 to the Harmony module's space-facing port. NASA astronaut Zena Cardman will lead Crew-11 with Pilot Mike Fincke of NASA and Mission Specialists Kimiya Yui of JAXA and Oleg Platonov of Roscosmos. 50 years ago today, two different spacecraft from the United States and the Soviet Union launched from opposites of the world to begin an era of international cooperation in space. Two days later, the Apollo spacecraft with NASA astronauts Tom Stafford, Vance Brand, and Deke Slayton docked with the Soyuz spacecraft carrying cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov. Stafford and Leonov opened the hatches between both spacecraft, shook hands, and conducted research before undocking two days later. The experience gained from the Apollo-Soyuz mission would inform operations on the International Space Station that will reach 25 years of continuous human habitation on Nov. 2 this year.
