Reeves says nuclear investment shows UK ‘back where it belongs'

The Chancellor has signed off on £14.2 billion of investment to build the new Sizewell C nuclear plant in Suffolk, while Rolls-Royce has been named as the preferred bidder to build small modular reactors (SMRs) in a programme backed by £2.5 billion of taxpayers' cash.
Ms Reeves will use Wednesday's spending review to allocate tens of billions of funding for major infrastructure projects over the rest of the decade.
Officials hope SMRs will be cheaper and quicker to build than traditional power plants, and projects could be connected to the grid by the mid-2030s.
Ms Reeves said: 'The UK is back where it belongs, taking the lead in the technologies of tomorrow with Rolls-Royce SMR as the preferred partner for this journey.'
The SMR project could support up to 3,000 new skilled jobs and power the equivalent of around three million homes, with a first site expected to be allocated later this year by state-owned Great British Energy – Nuclear.
Tuesday's announcement of Rolls-Royce as the preferred bidder came after the Government confirmed financial support for Sizewell C.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said new nuclear power capacity was needed to deliver a 'golden age of clean energy abundance'.
Trade unions welcomed the Sizewell move, which the Treasury said would go towards creating 10,000 jobs, including 1,500 apprenticeships.
But the head of a campaign group opposing the plant criticised the decision to commit the funding, saying it is still not clear what the total cost will be.
Nuclear plants are seen as increasingly important electricity sources as the Government tries to decarbonise Britain's grid by 2030, replacing fossil fuels with green power.
The last time Britain completed one was in 1987, which was the Sizewell B plant.
Hinkley Point C, in Somerset, is under construction and is expected to produce enough power for about six million homes when it opens, but that may not be until 2031.
The Energy Secretary said: 'We need new nuclear to deliver a golden age of clean energy abundance, because that is the only way to protect family finances, take back control of our energy, and tackle the climate crisis.
'This is the Government's clean energy mission in action – investing in lower bills and good jobs for energy security.'
It will get the UK off the 'fossil fuel rollercoaster', he separately told The Guardian.
'We know that we're going to have to see electricity demand at least double by 2050. All the expert advice says nuclear has a really important role to play in the energy system.
'In any sensible reckoning, this is essential to get to our clean power and net zero ambitions.'
The joint managing directors of Sizewell C, Julia Pyke and Nigel Cann, said: 'Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Sizewell C, the UK's first British-owned nuclear power plant in over 30 years.'
At the peak of construction, Sizewell C is expected to provide 10,000 jobs and the company behind the project has already signed £330 million worth of contracts with local businesses.
The plant, which will power the equivalent of six million homes, is planned to be operational in the 2030s.
The GMB union said giving Sizewell C the go-ahead was 'momentous'.
Regional Secretary Warren Kenny said: 'Nuclear power is essential for clean, affordable, and reliable energy – without new nuclear, there can be no net zero.
'Sizewell C will provide thousands of good, skilled, unionised jobs and we look forward to working closely with the Government and Sizewell C to help secure a greener future for this country's energy sector.'
Alison Downes, of Stop Sizewell C, said ministers had not 'come clean' about the full cost of the project, which the group have previously estimated could be some £40 billion.
She said: 'Where is the benefit for voters in ploughing more money into Sizewell C that could be spent on other priorities, and when the project will add to consumer bills and is guaranteed to be late and overspent just like Hinkley C?'
The Government has also promised £2.5 billion over five years for fusion energy research and £6 billion of investment for the industrial base supporting the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet.

Kemi Badenoch blasts Nigel Farage's Reform over support for a burka ban saying enforcing it would be a waste of police time

Kemi Badenoch hit out at Reform MPs for backing a burka ban today, saying policing what people wear would be a waste of officers' time. The Opposition leader said that she was against women being forced to wear clothing against their wishes. But she suggested that Reform's support for a ban on the Islamic outfit - which covers the whole body, apart from a gauze veil over the eyes - was 'a policy without a plan'. At the weekend Ms Badenoch backed giving employers the right to insist staff wore clothing that showed their face at work. But speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning, she appeared to rule out going any further. She said that women should not 'be forced to wear things that their husbands and their community want', but added: 'Are we going to send police officers into people's homes to check if they are wearing the burka at a time when we cannot even keep prisoners in prison, (when) we are releasing them? 'Do we have space in prison to put people wearing the burka in? 'This is what I mean by people just saying things, announcing policies without plans.' The last week has seen Nigel Farage's party riven by a row over the idea of a burka ban. Chairman Zia Yusuf briefly quit after MP Sarah Pochin asked about it at Prime Minister's Questions last week. But other Reform MPs including Lee Anderson and Richard Tice have also backed a law telling women what they can and cannot wear. Ms Badenoch revealed at the weekend that she will not see anyone at surgeries in her North East Essex constituency if they have a face covering. And this morning she told Today that she had done so. British employers are able to set their own workplace dress codes, but could face legal challenges under equality law if they tell staff to remove religious clothing without demonstrating it is 'proportionate' and for a 'legitimate' aim, such as health and safety.

World-famous UK city wants to introduce £5 congestion charge on EVERY car in ‘concerning' move

The move comes amid claims that councillors are trying to turn it into a 'cycle-only city' TAKING ITS TOLL World-famous UK city wants to introduce £5 congestion charge on EVERY car in 'concerning' move Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WORLD-famous UK city is planning to introduce a congestion charge in a move that has led to a civil war between local authorities. Oxford is famous for its gothic spires and picturesque bridges, which attract sightseers from around the world. The congestion charge, proposed by Oxfordshire County Council, would be the first new levy of its kind introduced in a British city in two decades. However, the other local authority in the region, Oxford City Council, slammed the scheme as elitist. They say there has been "no engagement" on the proposals and that the congestion charge "only allows people who can afford to do so to buy access to our streets." Speaking to The Telegraph, Susan Brown, the leader of the city council, said: 'There has been no engagement with businesses, residents or the city council until today – yet again the city is being done to rather than engaged with in preparing transport proposals. 'We are concerned that this scheme allows people who can afford to do so to buy access to our streets. Those who can't will struggle.' Oxfordshire County Council called comments from the city authority "disappointing". Campaigner Clinton Pugh, the father of Hollywood starlet Florence Pugh, told The Telegraph that the proposed scheme risked turning Oxford into a Singapore-like location in which only the wealthy could afford to drive in the city. The former restauranteur also claimed that the County Council were trying to turn Oxford into a 'cycle-only city' which would have a destructive impact on local businesses in the area. He added: 'You have got no one in the council who has any business experience and understands the impact of doing this.' In a statement, Oxfordshire County Council said: "Proposed options to manage congestion in and around Oxford will be discussed by Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet on 17 June. "Options will include a temporary congestion charge for the city. "The council has committed to addressing congestion in the short-term, after its plan to implement six trial traffic filters was postponed due to the ongoing closure of Botley Road, now expected to reopen in August 2026. Shocking moment cyclist tears through traffic with child clinging to back - before riding WRONG way through roundabout "The council's cabinet will be asked to approve the start of a public consultation on a temporary congestion charge. "The scheme would improve bus services and make it easier for those with permits, including carers, traders and blue badge holders, to travel by car into and around the city. "If approved, a public consultation would start on 23 June, with a view to implementing the temporary scheme in autumn this year." Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport Management, told The Express: 'We urgently need to see improvements to travel around the city; better bus services and less traffic overall, to help people get around. 'We must take action for our residents, businesses and visitors while Oxford's Botley Road remains closed and I look forward to discussing the options with cabinet colleagues.'
