Veteran federal judge T.S. Ellis III, who presided over trial of Trump aide Paul Manafort, has died
Ellis oversaw the trials of former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and former U.S. Rep. William 'Dollar Bill' Jefferson as well as the plea deal of 'American Taliban' John Walker Lindh across a judicial career that lasted more than 35 years.
His acerbic wit sometimes drew muted complaints at the courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia, where Ellis was based, but his legal reasoning was unquestioned.
Ellis died Wednesday at his home in Keswick, according to the Cremation Society of Virginia.
Thomas Selby Ellis III was born in Colombia in 1940 and frequently found ways in court to utilize his Spanish-language skills. He often told Spanish-speaking defendants who relied on interpreters to speak up as they pleaded for leniency, saying he wanted to hear their words for himself.
He joined the Navy after receiving an undergraduate degree from Princeton, and completed graduate studies at Oxford. He received his law degree from Harvard, graduating magna cum laude.
He was appointed to the federal bench by President Ronald Reagan in 1987.
In a courthouse known as the 'Rocket Docket' for its speedy disposition of cases, Ellis' courtroom reflected his iconoclastic nature. Rarely did his hearings start on time, though when he presided over jury trials his punctuality improved as he zealously guarded jurors' time commitments.
He frequently chastised lawyers to cut short long-winded arguments, in what he called 'a concession to the shortness of life.' But he was easily coaxed or diverted into telling stories from the bench recalling episodes from his long legal career.
He snapped at lawyers who annoyed him, but would often adopt a more conciliatory tone later in the same hearing, and apologize for his short temper.
His penchant for speaking freely drew raised eyebrows at what was arguably the highest-profile trial over which he presided: the prosecution of Manafort, on charges of tax and bank fraud related to his work advising pro-Russia Ukrainian politicians before managing Trump's campaign.
Ellis ultimately delivered a 47-month sentence, and said as an aside that Manafort appeared to have lived 'an otherwise blameless life,' a phrase he often used at criminal sentencings. Critics who found much to blame in Manafort's long career working for clients including the tobacco industry and international despots were outraged by the comment.
In 2009, Ellis sentenced Jefferson, a former Louisiana congressman, to 13 years in prison for taking bribes, including $90,000 found hidden in his freezer. The case threw multiple curveballs at Ellis, including a sexual relationship between a key witness and an investigating FBI agent.
In 2017, Ellis reduced Jefferson's sentence to time served after a Supreme Court case changed the rules for what constitutes bribery of public officials. He made clear, though, that he believed Jefferson's actions were criminal, and called his conduct 'venal.'
'Public corruption is a cancer,' he said at the time of Jefferson's resentencing. 'It needs to be prosecuted and punished.'
Ellis' sentencing hearings often followed a familiar script in which he invited defendants to explain themselves 'by way of extenuation, mitigation, or indeed anything at all' that they wanted to say on their behalf. He invariably told defendants before passing judgment that 'you write the pages to your own life story.'
Ellis took senior status as a judge in 2007 but regularly worked an extensive docket. In recent years, with his failing health, his cases were reassigned.

Boeing fighter jet workers reject 40pc pay rise to go on strike
More than 3,200 workers at a Boeing plant where Donald Trump's new stealth fighter will be made have walked out in a row over wages. Engineers on warplane assembly lines in St Louis, Missouri, went on strike on Monday after rejecting a 40pc pay rise. The strike, which leaves the factory idle for the first time in 30 years, represents the latest blow to Boeing after six years of setbacks and massive financial losses. The dispute involves members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who are responsible for producing the F-15 Eagle, the F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters, the T-7 trainer and the MQ-25 refuelling drone. Boeing also plans to make the new F-47 fighter for the US Air Force (USAF) in St Louis after it was handed the contract by Mr Trump in March. The award represented a coup for Boeing, since the F-47 will replace the F-22 Raptor built by rival Lockheed Martin. Lockheed had come to dominate fighter production with models including the F-35 Lightning – of which more than 3,000 are being built. The contract also provided a welcome boost following a series of crises involving Boeing's best-selling 737 Max airliner. These included two fatal crashes that led the jet to be grounded for 18 months. And last year, a door-panel blowout led investigators to uncover a plethora of production issues.

Investor confidence in EU drops after Trump's Brussels trade deal
Investor confidence in the EU has fallen sharply after Donald Trump's trade agreement with Brussels, amid mounting concern about the economic hit from the US president's tariff war. The latest snapshot from the Sentix index showed that investor sentiment fell significantly at the start of the month after the deal last week between Trump and the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen. The data provider said its weekly survey of thousands of investors in more than 20 countries showed that the pact was a 'deal that dampens the mood', with Trump and the US viewed as 'winners' at the expense of the eurozone. 'The result is devastating for the eurozone,' said Manfred Hubner, the managing director of the Sentix economic index. 'The current situation and expectations are both declining. The wrinkles of concern in the economy are deepening again.' Financial markets are braced for Washington to introduce sweeping, higher 'reciprocal' tariffs on imports from dozens of countries from the middle of this week, including Brazil on Wednesday and most other nations from Thursday. Share prices in Switzerland, which is facing a 39% export tariff from Thursday, plunged on Monday, as nations around the world continue to grapple with the fallout from Trump's erratic global trade war. Financial markets elsewhere rallied, including in London, Frankfurt, and Paris, after a tariff-related sell-off at the end of last week. In tangled negotiations, with the threat of tariffs being withheld, escalated and rescinded on an almost daily basis, Washington remains locked in talks with several countries. A tariff of 40% on US imports from Brazil will begin on Wednesday, and will be topped up to 50% from Thursday. Canada is pushing for a deal to bring down tariffs of 35% on its exports, which was introduced from Friday, while US border taxes on imports from China and Mexico have been paused to allow more time for negotiations. The latest snapshot from Sentix showed sharp declines in investor confidence in Germany and Switzerland in particular after the agreement reached between Trump and von der Leyen at the US president's Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. The US-EU trade deal drew swift condemnation from some European leaders, including the French prime minister, François Bayrou, who called it a 'dark day' for the EU. The agreement involves Washington imposing a 15% tariff on almost all European exports to the US, about triple the 4.8% tariff now in force. However, the pact limited a much higher – 30% – import duty threatened from Trump's self-imposed 1 August deadline.

Alice Evans reveals she had 'the best birthday ever' in gushing tribute to her two daughters as she says she is still fighting to keep a roof over their heads
Alice Evans has told how she had the 'best birthday ever' in a loving tribute to the two daughters she shares with her ex-husband Ioan Gruffudd. In an apparent dig to her former partner, Alice said this year's celebrations were the best yet as she spent the day with her children, Ella, 16, and Elsie, 13. Alice shared a sweet snap of the 'awesome threesome' cuddled up together as she said how she is constantly fighting to keep a roof over their heads. Alice is currently in the midst of a bitter legal battle with her ex-husband Ioan regarding child support payments for their two daughters. She wrote: 'Awesome threesome. Best birthday I have ever had. My girls I love you more than life itself sad nothing will ever come between us. 'My role is to keep you safe, keep you fed with a roof over your beautiful heads, which I spend all my days trying to do. She wrote: 'Awesome threesome. Best birthday I have ever had. My girls I love you more than life itself sad nothing will ever come between us' 'And to be there for you when you need a parent when you need to talk. We've talked so many times this weekend I feel even closer to to both than I was before. 'You are AMAZING children. Thank you for being mine.' The new post comes soon after Alice shared a post about her 'sad feelings' as she took to Instagram after lamenting the state of her old neighbourhood. The actress' post came just hours after Ioan's new wife Bianca Wallace denied she had ever had an affair with Ioan - insisting their romance began when he was single - and accused Alice of inventing the 'disgusting, vile story'. Alice didn't respond to Bianca's accusations as she took to social media to share her sadness after returning to her old neighbourhood to find many of the old shops all boarded up. Visiting her old neighbourhood in Melrose/Fairfax in Los Angeles with her daughter Elsie Alice confessed she was left shocked after returning to find 'the whole place abandoned'. Sharing snaps of the surroundings where many shops were shut she penned: 'Sad feelings. What is happening to our world? 'Elsie and I made a trip back to our old neighborhood of Melrose/Fairfax yesterday because I had a meeting nearby. And so many things were boarded up!! Alice shared a post about her 'sad feelings' and asked 'what is happening to our world' as she shared a snap with her daughter Elsie 'This is Fred Segal Melrose, which housed Cafe Mauro, which was a central meeting point for so many Angelenos over the past 30 years. 'It was a celebrity hotspot. Guaranteed if you've ever checked out the paparazzi pics in one of those magazines we all used to guiltily buy at the airport you've seen pics from outside Fred Segal. 'But it was also a beloved local joint. We lived one minute's walk from it for 17 years and I never saw the car park less than ramming. Here we are, Elsie and me and the whole place is abandoned. The car behind us is ours. It felt very sad.' She continued: 'We went on a little drive after that and place after place had closed down. I think you don't notice so much when you're living there, but coming back after 6 months or so is a shock.' The star then asked her followers: 'What do people think? Are commercial rents too high? Are we moving to a buy online/order in lifestyle? 'Tell me about things you've noticed on your neighborhoods. Our world is changing so fast!' Alice also thanked fans for her support after she confirmed she is doing a Meet and Greet in Covington, Georgia as she took to Instagram to share the exciting news on Tuesday. She added: 'As always, love you all and THANK YOU for the love after my last post. A xxxxx'. Joined by her daughter Elsie she shared snaps of the surroundings as she penned: ' Sad feelings. What is happening to our world?' Bianca finally responded to the accusations as she revealed she did not have an affair with Ioan after receiving threats towards her unborn baby from trolls. Taking to Instagram with a screenshot of some of the hate she has received - Bianca called the affair accusations 'pathetic' and 'utterly ridiculous'. She penned: 'I have ignored this truly pathetic narrative for nearly 4 years now because of how utterly ridiculous and clearly insane it is. 'But threaten my innocent, unborn baby and the time for ignoring is up! Absolutely no one will ever threaten my baby over a made up story about an affair that literally never happened! No way.' Since Ioan and Bianca went public with their relationship, Alice has openly hit out at their relationship on social media and claimed the pair had been embroiled in a three-year affair. Back in 2022 Bianca posted a snap of her and Ioan holding hand which Alice branded 'sick' and 'evil' and claimed seeing the image was like a 'stake in the heart.' Responding to Alice's claims directly in her post, Bianca continued: 'In October 2021 my husband's ex made up a disgusting, vile story about my husband and I having an affair. Taking to Instagram on Monday with a screenshot of the hate she has received she stated the affair accusations were 'pathetic' and 'utterly ridiculous' Alice (pictured) previously accused her estranged husband of cheating on her for three years with the Bianca, who is 21 years her junior, telling fans she was 'lost, sad and confused' 'For 3 years and 9 months the narrative as been ongoing, making people like 'rivqah2020' message me, and now my unborn baby, threats like this. 'The TRUTH has been set in black and white, in clear evidence, under oath numerous times, and all available in public record.' She added: 'I will not have my innocent baby born into this completely intentional manufactured drama. This has all got to end now, and it needs to end with the truth and facts. 'My husband and I haven't deserved one second of this, and now, our unborn baby is being threatened and attacked. Absolutely no f*****g way! 'I know that I speak for so many people out there who have lived through this kind of abuse, lies and manipulation when I say we are all sick and tired of the b******t now.' Alice previously confirmed her separation from the Welsh star in a series of furious tweets posted on Twitter in January 2021 - with Ioan moving on with his new girlfriend Bianca in the following October.
