It bears the engraving of a crowned lion and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
But, an eagle-eyed owner realised something different about its colour which made it unusual.
It had a bronze-brown hue, which suggested it wasn't a typical 10p.
Expert analysis went on to discover it was actually crafted rom 97 per cent copper.
This made it stand apart from the expected cupronickel composition.
The Royal Mint confirmed the error in 1974, and explained: "This coin was produced at the Royal Mint but was struck, inadvertently, on a bronze coin-blank intended for another denomination."
The super rare coin went under the hammer at RWB Auctions, in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire.
It is understood there has only ever been one other copper 10p coin from that era sold at auction.
The coin's owner spotted the abnormality around 50 years ago, but held on to it until now.
Christopher Collects, a coin expert and popular YouTuber associated with RWB Auctions, said: "We're very pleased that the owner of this fascinating coin has achieved such a good price after holding onto it for so many years.
"It's proof that checking your change with an eagle eye can still turn up rare and unusual coins."
The Sun recently found four rare coins that sold for a combined total of £423.59 this June.
The Atlantic Salmon piece features a portrait of King Charles III on the front, while the back of the coin depicts the fish leaping from the waves.
Research by Change Checker found only 200,000 of these coins have entered circulation, making it one of the rarest coins in the UK.
The group said only around one in 335 people in the UK could have the chance of snagging one.
And it appears collectors are prepared to pay a pretty penny for one of these coins.
On Saturday, June 21, a seller managed to flog an Atlantic Salmon coin for £70.59. That makes it 141 times its face value.
That was after a fierce bidding war with 18 wannabe buyers.
The second, was a Kew Gardens 50p coin, which has an image of the late Queen Elizabeth II, with the engraver's initials, Ian Rank-Broadley, below.
But what makes it special is the reverse, which features a leafy vine wrapped around a Chinese pagoda.
It also has the date of the year it was made to commemorate the anniversary.
There are around 210,000 of these coins in circulation making it another rare find.
Recently one of these coins sold for £127.08 on June 22 after 16 people tried to bid for it.
That makes it a whopping 254 times its face value.
But in the past, Kew Gardens coins have sold for up to £700.
The third, a coin known as the Offside Rule 50p, is one of twenty-nine commemorative 2012 Olympic 50ps issued by The Royal Mint.
The design was created by Neil Wolfson, a sports journalist and features a diagram to show how the Offside Rule works.
Around 1.2million of the Olympic Football 50p's were put into circulation, so you might have a better chance of finding one lying around your house.
On June 22, one of these coins sold for £17.59 after eight bids.
On this occasion, the coin has sold for over 35 times its face value.
But in the past, it has sold for £24 so there is a chance you get more depending on collectors' interest at the time.
And finally, the Blue Peter 50p coin, released in 2009 ahead of the London Olympic games in 2012.
It features a cartoon of a high jumper on the back, with the design etched by a nine-year-old girl.
Over 2.2million of the Blue Peter 50p coins were issued, with most minted in 2011.
In the past, this coin has sold for up to £223.
On Sunday June 22 The Sun spotted one of these coins sold for £208 after an eight-person bidding war.
On this occasion, the Blue Peter coin has sold for 416 times its face value.

Disgraced Prince Andrew joins Charles' Balmoral holiday despite humiliating claims
Disgraced Prince Andrew and his former wife Sarah Ferguson, are said to have travelled to Scotland to join King Charles for the Royal Family's annual summer Balmoral break Prince Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have reportedly joined King Charles at Balmoral for the royals' annual summer getaway - despite humiliating claims in a brand new book. The disgraced Duke of York is said to be staying with Fergie at the seven-bedroom Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate, which was a favourite place to stay of the late Queen's. It comes after a biography called Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the Yorks' by Andrew Lownie, which hit shelves last week, delved into the private life of Andrew, depicting him as sex obsessed, a "useful idiot" and easy prey for Jeffrey Epstein. READ MORE: Prince Philip 'whispered four brutal words' to Queen at Harry and Meghan's wedding Meanwhile, research found that the majority of the public would back the removal of his York dukedom, as well as his princely title. At Christmas, Andrew and Fergie stayed away from royal celebrations in Sandringham following the revelation of Andrew's links to an alleged Chinese spy. However, a royal insider told The Sun of Andrew's summer getaway: "The Balmoral invitation is a huge show of support." It is believed Andrew and Fergie are set to be joined by their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and their children. It comes as it is reported the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children are set to visit Balmoral, as are the Duke and Duchess of Edinbrugh, Edward and Sophie, and their children. Yesterday, the King officially kicked off his Balmoral visit, where he is expected to stay for three weeks, with a military ceremony. Charles arrived at the Aberdeenshire castle in his state Bentley and inspected regimental mascot Corporal Cruachan IV, a Shetland pony, as it stood with handler Corporal Rory Stewart as the monarch inspected his Royal Guard. A Guard of Honour was held by Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) to officially welcome the King to Balmoral, although he attended a church service there on Sunday in a private capacity. After the ceremony, there was a performance from the Pipes and Drums, formed by soldiers from across the regiment, including from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Battalions, in a display of pageantry which was closely linked to this year's Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Charles is the Colonel in Chief of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and wore his relatively new King Charles III tartan, which was designed on the date of his coronation, May 6 2023, and is restricted for the exclusive use of the Royal Family members. The King greeted tourists and holidaymakers from France, the Netherlands and Germany in temperatures which reached 23C.

Wimbledon champion tells cameraman to stop filming her as she removes clothes on court Iga Swiatek was involved in a brief altercation at the end of the opening set during her semi-final clash with Elena Rybakina at the Cincinnati Open, as she demanded a cameraman stopped filming her Iga Swiatek was in fine form on Saturday (Image: Robert Prange, Getty Images) Iga Swiatek requested a camera operator to cease filming her during her Cincinnati Open semi-final match against Elena Rybakina. The Polish tennis ace went on to secure a comfortable victory in a contest lasting over an hour and 38 minutes, securing her place in the final against Jasmine Paolini. Swiatek had to dig deep in the opening set, clinching a 7-5 win to take a significant step towards the final. The 24-year-old then sealed the match with a 6-3 victory in the second set on her way to the final. Swiatek maintained her composure throughout the match, even when asking a camera operator to stop filming at the end of the first set. The camera followed this year's Wimbledon champion to her bench to capture her reactions after the gruelling set. However, after exhaling a sigh of relief and removing her cap, Swiatek then gestured to the operator and waved her hand down the lens to signal that she no longer wished to be filmed as she was about to change. Article continues below A brief wag of the finger further emphasised her point. The shot ended while Swiatek prepared to change her top, as most players do between sets to stay comfortable, reports the Express. Iga Swiatek urged the cameraman to move on (Image: X) The brief interaction did not affect the eventual winner's focus, and she went on to reach her first final in Cincinnati. Following her victory, Swiatek said: "At the beginning, the level was pretty crazy. "We played so fast that sometimes we couldn't run to the second ball. I was there to play with intensity and good quality. "I'm super happy with the performance. Anyone in the final is going to be super tough, so I have to think tactically. Iga Swiatek was crowned Wimbledon champion earlier this summer (Image: Getty) "I will focus on myself and do what I've been doing, because for sure I feel like there's been progress at this tournament. I just want to continue that, no matter what the result is. "I feel the love here, it's a great place to be. People of Cincinnati are so nice, everywhere we go, even though we're here to play, we feel like we can have peace and just relax when off the court. "So thank you guys for coming out, rooting for us and see you tomorrow." Article continues below Swiatek ultimately reigned victorious in the final of the Cincinnati Open on Monday, pipping Paolini to the punch with a comfortable 7-5 6-4 victory to clinch her first-ever win at the event.
