Drink-drive deaths up 7% in a decade
That represented a 14% reduction on the previous 12 months, but a 7% increase from 2013.
Some 16% of road deaths in 2023 involved drink-driving.
Nicholas Lyes, director of policy and standards at road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, said: 'Drink-driving can have devastating consequences.
'While the latest drink-drive related fatality figures have declined on the previous year, the trend over the past decade is troubling and shows that we are stuck in a dangerous rut.
'We must redouble our efforts on enforcement, providing the police with the necessary tools to clamp down on drink-drivers while reviewing our approach to both first time and repeat offenders.'
The drink-drive limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.
Nowhere else in Europe has a limit above 50mg/100ml.
The Scottish Government reduced its limit to that level in 2014.
Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency statistics previously obtained by the PA news agency revealed 27,837 British motorists were convicted of drink-driving multiple times in the 11 years to July 20 2024.
Some 372 were caught at least four times, including four who were prosecuted on seven occasions.

A manhunt has begun for a train sex attacker who repeatedly assaulted a woman on a central London service. The horrifying attack happened on a South Western Railway train travelling through the Richmond and Lambeth areas of London at around 4.40pm on Tuesday, May 13. The train was between Richmond's Barnes Bridge station and Lambeth's Vauxhall station in the south-west of the capital when the suspect struck. A BTP statement reads: 'Officers believe the man in the image may have information which could help their investigation.' Anyone who recognises the man in the picture is urged to contact the BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 296 of 14 May. The appeal comes just two days after officers released a CCTV image in connection with another sexual assault on the Transport for London (TfL) network. A man attacked another man onboard an Elizabeth line train from the Chadwell Heath area of east London inbound to Whitechapel, nearer the centre of the capital. The shocking assault happened at around 8am on Monday, June 16 - during rush hour, when thousands of commuters would have been heading to work. The suspect struck as the two men were stood near the doors of the London Underground train. BTP officers released a CCTV image two days ago of a man they believe may have information that could help with their investigation. He is of average build with short, dark hair and a full, dark beard and pictured speaking into what appears to be an older style flip phone. The man can also be seen wearing a grey gilet, black and white trainers, white socks and a black tracksuit which has white stripes on the arms, legs and cuffs. Anyone who recognises him is asked to contact the BTP by texting 61016, or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 688 of 16 June. For both the Vauxhall and Elizabeth line incidents, anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111 or the charity's website.

Race-fixing scandal rocks horseracing as BHA launches investigation
A jockey is under investigation over an alleged race-fixing scandal, it has emerged. The unnamed rider is at the centre of claims horses had been stopped from running on their merits (which, under the rules, means jockeys pushing horses for timely, real and substantial effort). The probe has been launched by the British Horseracing Authority. According to The Sun, the jump jockey has been asked to hand over electrical devices, including laptops, tablets and a mobile phone. At least one other rider and a licensed trainer are also said to have been involved in inquiries. A BHA spokesperson said: 'The BHA will not comment on speculation surrounding any investigations or potential investigations.' The alleged race-fixing scandal is the first to hit racing since Danny Brock was banned for 15 years by a BHA-commissioned independent disciplinary panel. In January 2023, Brock was found guilty of stopping horses at three all-weather flat races between December 2018 and March 2019 from which a group of gamblers profited. Among the other parties disciplined in the case was Sean McBride – assistant trainer to his father Philip 'Charlie' McBride in Newmarket – who was banned for seven years, later reduced to five on appeal. 'This welcome outcome sends a powerful message that conduct of this nature will never be tolerated,' the BHA said at the time. 'The conduct of the individuals found in breach in this case risked undermining confidence in our sport and flagrantly disregarded the hard work and dedication of people up and down the country who carry out their duties in good faith. 'It is vital that supporters and bettors have faith in the fairness and integrity of our sport. At the same time, participants must have absolute confidence that they are competing on a level playing field. We are grateful to the panel for their diligence in hearing and passing judgment on this important case.' Brock stopped riding as a jockey in 2021 and became a greyhound trainer.
