Rankings: Horror scenario where Springboks could fall to SIXTH
As a result of the Springboks' horror 38-22 defeat to Australia, they lost a whopping three rankings points and plunged to third place, while the All Blacks' good win over Argentina saw them gain 0.45 rankings points to leapfrog to the summit
There is still an expectation that the Springboks will bounce back against Australia in Cape Town this Saturday, but the fact remains: if they suffer another defeat by more than 15 points – a rankings nightmare would materialise.
A heavy defeat to the Wallabies – a team still ranked sixth in the world – could see the Springboks lose a further 2.65 rankings points, and that would see them plummet to sixth spot below England. Such a fall from grace would be almost unthinkable, but so was the scoreline last weekend.
If the Springboks were to suffer a defeat of less than 15 points, they would manage to hang onto third spot in the rankings, but they'd lose 1.77 ranking points and only just be marginally ahead of France and England.
That's the horror scenario, but by contrast, if the Springboks secure a big win over Australia by more than 15 points, they can jump back to second place ahead of Ireland.
Those permutations are based on the likelihood of New Zealand claiming victory against Argentina on Saturday night. Even so, ultimately the only way the All Blacks could lose top spot is if they somehow lost by more than 15 points to the Pumas while the Springboks beat Australia. 1 (↑2) New Zealand 92.51 2 (↑3) Ireland 89.83 3 (↓1) South Africa 89.78 (-3.00) 4 France 87.82 5 England 87.64 6 Australia 85.08 (+3.00) 7 Argentina 81.60 8 Scotland 81.57 9 Fiji 80.50 10 Italy 77.77

Orlando Pirates star to Europe's top level if...
Orlando Pirates sensation Mbekezeli Mbokazi delivered another stellar performance as the Buccaneers beat Stellenbosch 1-0 in the Betway Premiership. Remember what his coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, said last week? According to the French-Moroccan coach, the 19-year-old Mbokazi could reach the very top in Europe, only on three conditions. Confirmed: Kaizer Chiefs' tactical weakness While lauding the Hluhluwe-born left-footed star, Ouaddou, was quick to strike a balance between praise and caution. 'Let me be very honest, and you have to be careful when you compliment someone, they stop working,' Ouaddou told the media. 'But I have to say it, as a coach, when I compliment a player that is doing well, it's good for their mentality, confidence, and self-esteem. Kaizer Chiefs news: Left-back and left winger 'This guy [Mbokazi], if he continues to work, continue to be professional and take care of his lifestyle, I think he he as a great future. 'I have seen him again today [Saturday], he is just unbelievable, it's a performance for big clubs in Europe, and we are happy to have him at Orlando Pirates, a big club in Africa, but he has to keep working,' the Orlando Pirates mentor concluded. Orlando Pirates starting XI vs Stellenbosch FC
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has named his strongest possible starting line-up for Wednesday's clash against Stellenbosch FC. Kick-off at Orlando Stadium is at 19:30. Ouaddou is under immense pressure to deliver a win over Stellies as Pirates are currently sitting 15th on the log. They are one of the only two teams with no points this season – the other being Richards Bay FC who are 16th on the log. Now, Ouaddou has made a single change to the team that faced Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend. Patrick Maswanganyi is the only player who is missing from the starting line-up, and his place has been taken by Oswin Appollis. Pirates to face Sundowns in the MTN8. Springboks plot line-out bounce back after Wallabies' Ellis Park ambush
Springboks lock Ruan Nortje says the the Wallabies cam,e up with cunning plans at the lineout on at Ellis Park. Image: Backpagepix The line-out is normally where the magic happens for the Springboks. It's their biggest attacking platform and something they take a lot of pride in. But last Saturday at Ellis Park they were outfoxed by a cunning Wallabies team in their Rugby Championship opener. The Springboks ended the match with a 68.8% success rate in that department, losing several balls on their own throw because of the brilliant competing by the Australians. When you take away the Springboks' line-out, you take away several options in their attacking arsenal. Their much-vaunted maul is immediately nullified, while their variety of trick plays are also null and void. The strike plays when they go off the top of the lineout are also curtailed. This worked so well in that blazing 20 minutes of rugby in the first half, when centre André Esterhuizen and the loose forwards hit the line hard to gain attacking momentum. The maul is also viewed as an energy sapper for the opposition forwards. So, it wasn't surprising to see the Wallaby pack still fresh in that final quarter of the match, which in the end seemed to be the difference in the 38-22 victory. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Many of the Boks' other problems were connected to their malfunctioning line-out. Playing on the back foot saw them struggling to gain momentum at the collisions, which in turn saw them turn over the ball 17 times. So, how do the Boks right the ship ahead of their second meeting with the Wallabies in Cape Town on Saturday (5.10pm kick-off)? The man calling the shots at line-out time in the No 5 jersey this weekend, Ruan Nortje, believes that they have analysed what went wrong and have made the plans to get their biggest weapon to fire again. 'At the end of the day, we as the locks make the plan together, not just the guys who were on the field,' Nortje told the media, at the team's hotel on Wednesday. 'We know we are better than what we dished up on Saturday. But we have to credit Australia. They came with different pictures than they showed in previous matches. It may have caught us offside. 'This week has been about focusing on our plans and executing to the best of our abilities.' On their own line-out, the other thing the Wallabies did well was taking quick throw-ins – often skew – to try and get the ball in play before the Boks had a chance to contest. According to the recent law change, teams can get away with a skew throw-in if a team does not compete at line-out time. And the Wallabies did well to take the Boks' own strategy to compete away from them. 'We try to make the best plans to get front-foot ball. Australia did well this weekend to take quick line-outs to try and catch us off guard, by throwing the ball in before we can compete,' said Nortje. 'Sometimes they got away with it and other times they were blown up for a skew line-out.' Nortje will start a Test match with RG Snyman for the very first time, while veterans Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager will feature off the bench in a 6-2 split. It's a clear indication that the Boks will try and make up for the problems they faced at Ellis Park. With Etzebeth and De Jager coming off the bench, the starting pair of Snyman and Nortje are expected to 'empty the tank' in a massive physical onslaught in the shadow of Table Mountain at the DHL Stadium. 'It's my first time starting with RG, and I'm really excited to get the opportunity to play alongside him. He was at the Bulls a few years ago and I've always wanted to play with him. 'We can feed off each other a lot, and I'm personally excited about that. When you put on that jersey it's just about working hard and emptying the tank.'
