
E-book allows replicas to be 3-D printed
Forget your yellow rubber ducky — what about a plesiosaur to play with in the bathtub?
Fossilised bones from the prehistoric marine reptile are on display at the University of Otago's geology department and are among 50 fossils highlighted in a newly released e-book titled Fossil Treasures of the Geology Museum.
Many of the fossils in the online book have logos that say "print ready", which means readers can click on it and print their own 3-D replica of the fossil.
The book is the brainchild of University of Otago geology emeritus professor Daphne Lee, Geology Museum fossil collections archivist Dr Jeffrey Robinson, and University of Auckland School of Biological Sciences honorary academic and University of Otago visiting academic Dr Daniel Thomas.
Dr Thomas said the e-book, released last week, brought to life the stories of a selection of the 60,000 fossil vertebrate, invertebrate and plant specimens held in the Geology Museum.
Collected over 150 years of paleontology research at Otago, the fossils are used for research, teaching and outreach, and collectively represented the past 500 million years of Earth's evolutionary history, he said.
Fossil Treasures of the Geology Museum tells the tale of around 50 of the specimens in the geology museum.
"We have a range of materials like giant plesiosaurs; we have mega-sharks through to tiny little beetles, — so there's a huge diversity.
"These are from locations including Foulden Maar, and much of our material is from Southland in particular, but also North Otago, South Canterbury and beyond.
"So it has a strong southern, South Island focus."
He said the 3-D models spanned the past 500 million years, which gave insight into the range of fossils at the museum.
"Just as much as we have biological diversity represented in the book, we've actually got time diversity as well."
Dr Thomas said the e-book was released last week and was free to access.
It would be particularly useful for schools to use.
"Our target age is 13-14 and slightly younger.
"We actually have a couple of NCEA assessment standards that we had in mind while writing this.
"Because this is an e-book, we have infinite capacity to make improvements, so what we really want is to hear back from people, especially teachers, who may be thinking, 'I could use this, but it's not quite there'.
"We would really welcome those conversations so we can make improvements, to make this as useful and accessible as possible."
He said the trio would continue to add to the resource in the future.
"Certainly, those readers who are familiar with the collections will straight away see that there's a lot of material from the museum that's not currently in the e-book, especially plant material.
"And, so, these are all chapters that are actually in the works right now, and this will just be added to over time."

Discovery of genes relevant to disease a ‘eureka moment'

PHOTO: SUPPLIED Treatment for calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease — more commonly known as inflammatory arthritis — may soon take a major step forward following a major discovery by a University of Otago researcher. There is an unmet need for treatment of CPPD disease, which focuses on the alleviation of inflammation with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. But University of Otago microbiologist and immunologist Dr Tony Merriman has led an analysis of the genes of 550,000 Americans with the disease, while based at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. It is a first-of-its-kind genome-wide association study into the disease and the research found two genes — RNF144B and ENPP1 — that cause the debilitating calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposits in joints. He said the genes were detected both in people of European ancestry and African ancestry. "The most significant result of our research was the discovery of one of the genes, ENPP1. "The protein encoded by this gene controls the production of chemicals — adenosine monophosphate and inorganic pyrophosphate — that, together with calcium ions, lead to the formation of the CPP crystals," Dr Merriman said. Little is known about the other gene — RNF144B — aside from the possibility it is involved in inflammation. More was known about ENPP1 and of its potential importance to people with CPPD disease. Drugs targeting the protein have been developed in the treatment of infectious disease and cancer and they could now be evaluated for the treatment of CPPD disease. Dr Merriman said the discovery opened up promising new avenues for targeted prevention and treatment of CPPD disease, which were lacking at present. Co-investigator and Brigham and Women's Hospital rheumatology, inflammation and immunity division researcher Dr Sara Tedeschi said the genome-wide association with ENPP1 was "particularly exciting" as a rheumatologist because "it makes sense". "ENPP1 generates inorganic pyrophosphate, one of the components of CPP crystals. "Patients with CPPD disease are desperate for an effective treatment and trials testing ENPP1 inhibitors in CPPD disease would be of great interest." Dr Merriman said the researchers were "thrilled" about the potential impact of their discovery and the possibility of new drugs being developed for the treatment of CPPD disease. "The findings of this study produced a 'eureka moment', which can be rare in a scientist's career."

Vote to pursue $20m research into lakes
Find the money now or face "astronomically expensive restoration efforts" for Otago's deepwater lakes later, a regional councillor says. Cr Alexa Forbes, of Queenstown, said the Otago deep water lakes technical advisory group had clearly shown that research to support "proactive management" was far more cost-effective than remediation after degradation was evident. Voting in favour of the most ambitious research proposal in front of Otago regional councillors was a "no-brainer", Cr Forbes said yesterday. And councillors subsequently did vote unanimously in favour of pursuing an up to $20 million, 10-year monitoring and research effort for Lakes Wakatipu, Wānaka and Hāwea. Cr Forbes praised the decades-long campaigning by University of Otago freshwater scientist Associate Prof Marc Schallenberg and Guardians of Lake Wānaka president Don Robertson, who she said had both been raising the issue of the lakes' health "for a long, long time". Now, degradation of the lakes was "impossible to ignore", Cr Forbes said. "We've got multiple interconnected environmental stressors with long-term consequences for biodiversity, for our economics, for our water quality, for our environmental health and for how we live among these lakes," she said. "We can't move forward without evidence. "We can't not afford it. "The report makes the case for strategic research that can prevent astronomically expensive restoration efforts." The technical advisory group's report to the Otago Regional Council's science and resilience committee yesterday said recent test results had highlighted "concerning patterns and the limitations of the existing monitoring programme". Monitoring by the council showed algal biomass in the lakes had doubled in the past nine years. Invasive zooplanktonic and phytoplanktonic species had gained a foothold. And climate change signals had been observed in the region. However, it was "not clear exactly" why or how this was happening, because the monitoring programme now in place was not able to identify the "stressor-response relationships" at play, which limited its usefulness, the group's report said. Cr Elliot Weir said the $20m price tag for the work was "dwarfed by the economic and social and cultural and aesthetic benefits that those lakes bring". "Let's set this direction today," they said. "We do want to take care of these lakes and we'll invest quite heavily, if necessary, to fill those big knowledge gaps to do so." Council chairwoman Cr Gretchen Robertson said other organisations needed to get involved in the work. "We can't be the only organisation in this space. "And actually, we can't afford $20m. "But this is extremely important. "These lakes, as Cr Weir has just outlined, are incredibly valued, not just in Otago, but nationally. "They bring a huge amount to our country in terms of values Kiwis put on them — also international visitors. "We can't have them deteriorating. "Other lakes have got huge investment and research programmes that have been put into them once they've got to the point where they've deteriorated — we don't want to have that happening here." At the councillors' request the technical advisory group will now develop a more detailed research and monitoring plan at the $20m funding level. The group has also been asked to identify "funding opportunities" apart from the council to pay for the work.
