‘A horrible experience': Attorney for Clearwater Ferry crash survivors weighs in on case
CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — An attorney representing two survivors in the deadly Clearwater Ferry crash is weighing in on the case.
A recreational boat, driven by Jeff Knight, slammed into the back of the Clearwater Ferry near the Memorial Causeway Bridge on April 27, killing José Castro and injuring 10 others.

No charges have been filed in connection with the ferry crash.
'From the sworn witness statements already in your possession, as well as from the video evidence, there is consistent and credible evidence that no stern light was visible at the time of the incident,' Knight's attorney J. Kevin Hayslett wrote in a letter to investigators.
Meanwhile, an attorney representing two survivors spoke to News Channel 8 about the case.
'They are a family who was on this cruise just out to enjoy the community on the beautiful bay and went through a horrible experience,' said attorney Mickey Keenan. 'The thing that came out that really incited my clients was that the blame appeared to be shifted.'
Last week, passengers onboard the private boat that slammed into the ferry wrote sworn letters to investigators detailing what they experienced that night.
Three women described what led up to the crash and its aftermath in their written statements. The women reported having alcoholic drinks at dinner before getting on the boat, but said Knight did not have any. They insisted no one used drugs before or after dinner.
One woman described the area as being 'really dark' and the crash as 'out of nowhere.'
However, Keenan said there are additional factors to consider.
'There's many factors that go into the crash and we'll wait until the investigation is completed so they can make their determination on that,' Keenan said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is asking anyone with video footage from the area of the fatal ferry crash to contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.
Ferry Captain Dennis Kimerer provided the following statement:
'I consider myself fortunate to be alive and deeply thankful to the heroic passengers, first
responders, good Samaritans, and medical professionals whose quick actions saved lives during and after the collision.
My thoughts are with all those who were injured—and especially with the family mourning the loss of a beloved father. Out of respect for them and everyone affected, I will not be engaging in a public back-and-forth regarding the causes of this tragedy. I trust the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and other authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, and I will continue to cooperate fully with them.'

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A family in Wesley Chapel is traumatized after their rescue dog was attacked by an alligator in their backyard. A video shows Zeus, a German Shepherd, standing on a leash with a gator lurking just beyond the fence, a chilling moment the family now views as a warning. 'We have a doggy door, and Zeus will go in and out of it whenever he wants,' said Susan Alkhatib. 'We started yelling at him to come toward us. When he got closer, he got tired. So we had to kind of go into the pond a little bit to get him.' While News Channel 8 was interviewing the family, a gator emerged from the water again before slipping back in. 'I have a 7-year-old sister,' said one family member. 'And I just think, if she was at the fence, would he have done the same thing to her?' Zeus miraculously survived the attack. He suffered a fractured and displaced jaw, along with multiple puncture wounds around his neck. 'The vet said it looked like his whole head was in the gator's mouth,' said Alkhatib. 'Even he said, 'I don't know how he survived.'' 'I honestly can't believe he is alive,' Alkhatib said. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has sent out trappers, but so far, they have not been able to capture the gator. Zeus is now recovering from several surgeries. Florida man arrested for repeatedly stabbing shark in head as ‘revenge' for stealing fish after gory video goes viral
A Florida man claiming to be a boat captain was arrested Thursday after admitting he repeatedly stabbed a shark in the head in a Snapchat video that went viral late last month. Zane Garrett, 26, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after gruesomely knifing a bull shark near a wreck site off Key West on May 22 in a video titled 'Bud broke my rod,' Local 10 reported. Garrett, who is identified as a captain on Second Nature Charters' website, was turned over by an anonymous tipster who saw the horrifying video and reported it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, citing 'safety concerns,' according to the outlet. Garrett was recently 'investigated for false representation' because he does not have the required license to be a captain, it added. 3 Zane Garrett, 26, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty. 'Yah, that's me,' Garrett admitted when authorities presented him with the gory footage. Garrett claimed that his actions fell in line with the typical method used to deter sharks from stealing catches, and that stabbing one would ward others off. 3 Garrett confirmed to authorities that he was the person captured in the video. Local 10 He later confessed to stabbing the shark numerous times in an act of 'revenge' because the predator 'had stolen his fish and was a nuisance,' according to the warrant cited by Local 10. 'I asked Mr. Garrett if he thought that the repeated blows would eventually kill the shark, to which he replied, 'No. It takes a lot more to kill a shark than stabbing it in the head,'' the document stated. He also confessed that he 'did a lot more killing' of sharks with firearms and 'has stabbed sharks and/or killed sharks without harvesting them onto his boat many times in the past.' Authorities condemned the 'egregious' slaying for causing unnecessary harm to the shark. Garrett is being held in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Key West jail facility on a $10,000 bond. His arrangement is set for June 26.

Tow truck driver damages Pasco man's new septic system while looking for stuck Amazon truck
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Jerry Wolfe said he was shocked to discover a tow truck stuck in his Pasco County backyard, with one tire partially buried in his newly installed septic tank system. Wolfe told 8 On Your Side Consumer Investigator Shannon Behnken that the driver told him he was following GPS coordinates to locate a stuck Amazon delivery truck, which he claimed led him 60 paces past Wolfe's shed and onto his private property. The tow truck belonged to Pinellas Towing & Transport. After another tow truck arrived to pull the stuck vehicle free, Wolfe discovered significant damage to his septic system. Wolfe said the driver told him the manager would be available Monday to discuss the issue. However, Wolfe said he left multiple messages with no response, so he called Better Call Behnken for help. Thursday evening, Wolfe sids a check for the full amount was hand-delivered to his home. Behnken will follow up after Wolfe is able to cash the check. The tow truck manager told Behnken this was an honest mistake, and he would take care of covering the costs of the damages.
