
ER doctor sues Fraser Health over alleged unsafe working conditions, bullying and harassment
An emergency room physician who works at two Fraser Health hospitals has filed a lawsuit against her employer.
In her statement of claim, Dr. Kaitlin Stockton accuses the health authority of creating unsafe conditions for patients and staff.
'I'm concerned that the standard of care is slipping,' Stockton told CTV News.
'I really truly believe that things have to change. I believe that the public deserves to know what's happening in their publicly funded hospitals. And I believe that health-care providers have a right to a safe and respectful work environment.'
In the lawsuit, Stockton cites a number of security incidents in the emergency rooms at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody.
Among the examples included are a situation when a man threatened staff with a machete at Eagle Ridge Hospital in January, and another incident when a doctor was bitten by a pit-bull brought into the ER by a patient.
'Ensuring a safe work environment where we are not threatened with weapons and violent, vicious dogs is not very hard to achieve,' Stockton said.
The statement of claim also alleges hospital administration 'threatened to revoke Dr. Stockton's hospital privileges and to file a complaint against her with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia' because of a sign placed in the Eagle Ridge Hospital ER encouraging patients to contact their MLA if they have concerns about hospital conditions.
'I think that the public knows by now that we're dealing with a serious and dangerous situation,' said B.C. Conservative Party health critic Elenore Sturko. 'To see an emergency room doctor literally putting their career on the line to better our health-care system...she should be applauded, not punished.'
Citing the ongoing litigation, Fraser Health declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Health Minister Josie Osborne told CTV News she could not comment on the specific allegations in the lawsuit.
'Speaking more generally, it is essential that healthcare workers across the province feel they can raise workplace concerns to their employer,' Osborne said. 'Hearing directly from frontline workers is fundamental as we work together to strengthen public health care in B.C.'
Stockton still works for Fraser Health and said she's not sure if there will be professional repercussions for the lawsuit and speaking publicly.
'We've really tried hard to resolve this, and I've essentially been ignored and dismissed,' she said. 'This is about holding Fraser Health accountable for the workplace harassment that I experienced, and the horribly unsafe work conditions for our health-care providers, our front-line providers, which we desperately need right now in British Columbia.'
None of the allegations in the lawsuit have been tested in court.

B.C. massage therapist banned from touching parts of female patients' bodies

A B.C. massage therapist has been prohibited from massaging certain parts of female patients' bodies while a misconduct investigation is underway, according to the professional regulator. Stephen Glover, of Powell River, is being investigated after a patient submitted a complaint to the College of Massage Therapists of B.C. The woman he treated alleged that he 'provided a draping option to the patient that involved the complete exposure of a sensitive area of the patient's body' and that he 'massaged a sensitive area of the patient's body,' according to a notification posted online Tuesday. While the allegations have not been proven, the college issued an interim order restricting Glover's practise 'to protect the public.' The area that Glover is not allowed to treat is described in detail and encompasses, basically, the entire front torso below the collarbone and above the hips. 'This limit includes treating over the draping,' the interim order says. Glover is also required to post a notice of these limits, approved by the college, anywhere he is working.

SickKids Hospital seeing ‘tremendous increase' in e-scooter injuries, doctor says
SickKids is raising the alarm bell on the rise of injuries bringing kids and teens through the ER related to e-scooters. An emergency room doctor at Toronto's SickKids Hospital says physicians are already seeing a 'tremendous increase' in both the number and severity of e-scooter injuries this year. Dr. Daniel Rosenfield told CP24 on Tuesday morning that the emergency department at SickKids saw 16 e-scooter injuries in the month of May alone. Rosenfield said this marks the continuation of a concerning trend that the downtown hospital has seen in recent years. According to SickKids, there were 16 e-scooter injuries in June and July of last year, up from just five in June and July of 2023. 'We've seen major head injuries, major inter-abdominal injuries, significant fractures,' Rosenfield said. 'The majority of the injuries we've seen are head injuries and 80 per cent of our users have not been wearing helmets when they had these injuries.' Rosenfield said the most severe injuries included significant facial fractures and internal bleeding. Some resulted in hospital and even ICU admission. 'The speeds that these scooters can reach so quickly, the acceleration that's found within these, much like an electric car, is unlike anything we've ever seen,' he said. 'My six-year-old on his scooter with his foot power cannot get anywhere near the speeds these kids get at two and three seconds.' Recent hospital data from 2020 to 2024 found that about 25 per cent of patients at SickKids who presented with e-scooter injuries were admitted for serious injuries. Rosenfield said experts do not recommend e-scooter use for anyone under the age of 16, adding that anyone riding one should wear a helmet to prevent serious injuries in the event of a collision. 'We are really lucky that we haven't seen any fatalities to date, but I honestly think as this trend continues, there is a good possibility that could occur.'
