Morgan Geekie, Boston Bruins agree to 6-year contract extension
The Boston Bruins have agreed to a 6-year contract extension with forward Morgan Geekie, the team announced on Sunday. Bruins GM Don Sweeney announced the deal, which will run through the 2030-31 season and includes an annual salary cap hit of $5.5 million. Appearing in 77 games last season, Geekie notched 33 goals and 24 assist for the Bruins. It marked the first time Geekie surpassed 30 goals and 50 points in his NHL career. Geekie was second on the Bruins in goals, points, even strength goals, and even strength points. In 333 games with Boston, Seattle and Carolina, Geekie has a total of 72 goals and 87 assists after being drafted in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Hurricanes. Could Bruins reunite with Brad Marchand? One offseason question on the mind of many Bruins fans is could the team pursue a reunion with Brad Marchand? The Bruins shipped Marchand, who was in the final year of his contract and was unable to reach an extension with Boston, to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline. Though Marchand ended up netting the Bruins a first round pick by hitting playing time requirements in Florida, he also went on to lift the Stanley Cup and was a critical piece to the Panthers' championship run. WBZ-TV's Dan Roche asked Sweeney in an interview for Sports Final if there is a chance Marchand could return to the Bruins now that he is a free agent. "There's always a chance. It's ultimately his decision in a lot of ways. I can't handicap it one way or another between now and next week. We just think the world of Brad as a player. Both he and his family are special people," Sweeney said.

Elliotte Friedman Senses ‘Confidence' in Evan Bouchard's Next Move
Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard appears headed for a massive new contract with the franchise, whether or not he gets to the open market on July 1 or signs an extension before the start of free agency. Speaking on Sunday's episode of Sportsnet's "32 Thoughts" podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that both sides are moving toward a deal, and suggested a likely contract structure. "There seemed to be a lot of confidence over the weekend that they're gonna get this sorted out," Friedman said. "I wonder if it's gonna be around four times $9.5. "Like, that's just numbers that were being thrown around here. We'll see." A four-year deal at $9.5 million annually would carry a total value of $38 million, representing a major jump from Bouchard's previous two-year, $7.8 million contract, which he completed at the end of the 2024–25 season. According to AFP Analytics, Bouchard is projected to sign a max contract worth $87 million spread over eight years with an annual cap hit just short of $10.9 million. Bouchard, 25, was instrumental during Edmonton's run to a second consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearance last season. The blueliner finished the regular season with 67 points in 82 games while averaging more than 23 minutes a night. Already in the playoffs, Bouchard leveled up, providing the Oilers with 23 points in 22 games while logging over 26 minutes of average ice time. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman acknowledged that negotiations have already begun with Bouchard when speaking to the media at the NHL draft on Saturday. "We've begun the negotiations, that's all I really want to say," said Bowman. "I certainly think Bouch is a great player who had an excellent year. He's a big part of this and we're going to work through it." Boston Bruins, Morgan Geekie agree to $33 million extension
June 30 (UPI) -- The Boston Bruins and forward Morgan Geekie agreed to a six-year, $33 million contract extension, the NHL franchise said. The Bruins announced their agreement with Geekie on Sunday night. A six-year veteran, Geekie totaled career-highs in goals (33), assists (24), points (57) and games played (77) last season for the Bruins, who failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16. The third-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2017 NHL Draft joined the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. He signed a two-year contract with the Bruins in free agency before the 2023-24 season. Geekie, 26, increased his point totals over each of the last four seasons, with 22-, 28- and 39-point campaigns leading into his 57-point breakout. Geekie totaled 17 goals and 22 assists over 76 appearances in 2023-24 for the Bruins. He also recorded four goals that postseason, which tied David Pastrnak for the second most among Bruins players, trailing only Jake DeBrusk.
