Shelbourne take two-goal lead to Windsor after big win over 10-man Linfield

Conference League playoff, first leg: Shelbourne 3 (Wood pen 45+1, Odubeko 46, Caffrey 77) Linfield 1
On a sensational night for Irish clubs in Europe,
Shelbourne
knew that a 2-1 lead was not going to be enough to escape Windsor Park next Thursday and secure a place in the
Uefa Conference League
group stages.
Shels dominated 10-man Linfield in this playoff, that is worth over €3 million to the winners, before Matt Fitzpatrick was sent off in the 18th minute and, late on, they piled forward in search of that vital third goal.
Unsurprisingly, it was Harry Wood who steadied himself and let fly from 25 yards. His shot hit Harry East's leg and the post before falling for substitute Evan Caffrey, who beat Kirk Millar to the rebound to score into an open net.
There is no guarantee that their two-goal lead will be enough in the second-leg, but one thing is for certain – the game in this country is entering new territory next week.

The good times are never that far away.

There is a solid argument for Wood to be considered the best footballer currently earning a living in Ireland. For starters, his technique is silky smooth, and he never stops working.
The English midfielder is certainly the most influential in Shelbourne's recent history. It was Wood who scored the goal that beat Derry City in November to capture the League of Ireland title and send the north Dublin club on this European journey.
After Mipo Odubeko slipped before clipping the first of three penalties on the night over the Linfield crossbar five minutes before half-time, Wood wasted no time claiming the ball when Greek referee Vassilis Fotias touched his earpiece and pointed to the spot for a second time just before the break.
Odubeko, to his credit, having missed two clear chances to open the scoring, never stopped running and harrying centre-half Ben Hall.
Sure enough, after a lung-busting 60 metre sprint to counter-attack a Linfield corner, he nipped the ball off Hall, took the contact and went down a millimetre inside the visitor's box.
Fotias appeared to wave play-on before VAR instructed him to award another penalty. Wood slashed it past Chris Johns to send Tolka Park into a state of delirium.
That's only half the story from a hectic opening 45 minutes. Wood drew two fine saves out of Johns while Odubeko failed to put a free header on target, from Kerr McInroy's sixth-minute cross, having done the hard work of losing Hall.
Next, there was high drama as Fitzpatrick was shown a straight red card after accidentally raking his studs into Milan Mbeng's groin region. Both players were ball watching when Mbeng headed clear just as Fitzpatrick raised his leg and caught him.
The Greek official made a split second decision that Linfield manager David Healy passionately disputed.

Despite being reduced to 10, Kieran Offord had a great chance to put Linfield 1-0 ahead when he intercepted McInroy's pass out of defence, evaded the onrushing Dutch goalkeeper Wessel Speel only to curl his shot over the crossbar as he tried to evade Paddy Barrett on the goal line.
The adrenaline coursing through Tolka subsided for about 15 minutes, until Wood's cross hit Kyle McClean's hand. Penalty number one. Odubeko slipped and missed.
Shels manager Joey O'Brien made an inspired decision at the turn, replacing centre back Sam Bone with Evan Caffrey. It took the winger 30 seconds to come off the right and set up Odubeko for the second goal. The former Republic of Ireland under-21 had to aim his shot through seven Linfield bodies. No problem.
Shelbourne have made life difficult for themselves all season long. Rarely does a game passed without a shape-shift from the sublime to the sloppy.
Offord pulled one back in the 52nd minute when Millar's corner skimmed the heads of Sam Roscoe and Mark Coyle before the Scottish striker finished at the back post.
Would Bone have cleared it? Swings and roundabouts.
Cue 'God Save the King' from 300 travelling fans in the main stand.
Penalty number three, this time for Linfield, could have turned the tie upside down. Paddy Barrett was lucky to only see a yellow card when his hand denied Roscoe from scoring on the goal line. Offord stepped up, struck it well, only for Speel to save low to his left.
In a red blur, Wood was skipping out of one, two, three tackles before winning a corner down the other end.
Uefa only allowed 3,655 through the Drumcondra turnstiles but in that moment they sounded like 30,000.

Irish fitness racing brand Tryka lands multiyear Life Style Sports sponsorship

Irish fitness competition brand Tryka has signed a 'game-changing' multiyear, title sponsorship with Life Style Sports in advance of its inaugural national event at the RDS in October. The fitness racing brand, which was created by Freshly Chopped founder Brian Lee, has been modelled as a more accessible version of German company Hyrox 's popular indoor fitness competition. The hybrid fitness league is made up of a combination of resistance and cardio exercise and is designed for participants of all fitness levels. The race format includes a series of running intervals paired with 'functional' fitness movements, with a shorter, beginner-friendly format called Tryka 500. Tryka said the deal with Life Style Sports is 'game-changing' and claimed it was 'one of the biggest ever secured by an Irish fitness start-up', but the company did not disclose the value of the deal. READ MORE 'We're delighted to have Life Style Sports on board as our title partner,' said Mr Lee, adding that their new partner understood 'the power of sport to bring people together at a local level'. In partnering with Life Style Sports, Mr Lee said Tryka was 'set to ignite a nationwide fitness revolution' and that the sponsorship would allow the business to 'grow faster, reach more people and put Ireland on the map in the emerging hybrid fitness space'. Why is Ireland not considered a truly rich country? Listen | 39:28 As part of the deal, Life Style Sports will sell Tryka's new apparel range online and in selected stores, with the gear also available at the brand's fitness events. 'Life Style Sports has a deep connection to local sport and fitness culture across Ireland, and their support will help us engage more communities, create lasting impact and grow Tryka,' he said. Mark Stafford, the chief executive of Life Style Sports – which has 40 stores across Ireland – said the company was 'proud to support an Irish-led fitness movement that's bringing people together in a new and exciting way'. He said the partnership would help Life Style Sports to 'help more people get active, stay motivated and experience the power of sport, no matter their starting point.' The first national Tryka event is set for October 11th-12th at the RDS Simmonscourt in Dublin, with tickets costing €110 per participant. The event will be part of a 12-month race calendar, which will culminate in a season finale in the Algarve in 2026. The brand will be running community workout sessions and race simulations at affiliate gyms across the country to promote the event in October.

Shels boss Joey O'Brien: 'It's still all to play for'

Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien likes to describe European ties as "four halves of football". With two halves to go in the Conference League play-off against Linfield, his team are looking good thanks to a rip-roaring 3-1 win at Tolka Park on Thursday night. However O'Brien is taking nothing for granted ahead of next week's trip to Windsor Park. "We have an advantage going up there like the last time, but it's still all to play for," he said. "Yous are probably bored listening to it, we're going up there to attack the game, to go and win the game. That's what it's all about. It's the same mentality that we had when we went over to play Rijeka and Qarabag. We're going to win. "So that's going to be the same thing. We'll be going up there next week to win the game. It's a small advantage we have going up there next week. It's going to be a hell of a challenge. It's one we're looking forward to." It's a familiar path for Shels, who beat Linfield over two legs in the first round of the Champions League qualifiers. After both sides slid down to the third-tier Conference League in UEFA's snakes-and-ladders qualification process, we arrived at this rematch. Goals from Harry Wood, Mipo Odubeko and Evan Caffrey have the Reds in the driving seat, but Linfield played for over 70 minutes with ten men due to Matthew Fitzpatrick's controversial red card. Indeed they would have levelled things on the night had Kieran Offord converted a penalty to make it 2-2. Wessel Speel saved it, and Cafrey nabbed that all-important third goal to delight a partisan Tolka crowd. "At 2-0, we were sort of in control but probably the lads felt they were safe," admitted O'Brien. "I think sometimes on the football pitch, when you think you're safe, that's when you're unsafe really, you just come off it a little bit. We were made to pay obviously, 2-1. "And then they get the penalty. It's a massive moment by Wes to keep it 2-1. We made a couple of subs, we got back into it and it sort of settled us down. We had control of the game and it was great to get the third goal. "I think we said it loads of times. European football, for me, since I was playing years ago, it was always just four halves of football. That was the message at half-time, one half done. Go on and win the next half. Now it's two halves done with still loads to play for." Shels do have the luxury of a free weekend coming up. Last Sunday they looked leggy in defeat to St Pat's in the FAI Cup. With no league game until Sunday week, when Galway United come to Drumcondra, O'Brien has the chance to freshen up some bodies. "It's great not having a game on the weekend to be honest," he said. "We have some sore bodies because with the European Games and the league and the cup, the way it's been, it's been relentless, really. It gives us a couple of days now to sort of get back on the training pitch. "We haven't had much training over the last few weeks, really. It's just been a sort of rest, recovery, play. It gives us a nice build into that to actually get some good work on the training pitch. The lads are really pushing each other to try and get into the starting team." This could be the start of a truly memorable week for Irish football. Shamrock Rovers' brilliant 2-1 victory away to Santa Clara heightened the chances that two League of Ireland clubs will be playing in the league stage of the Conference League over the autumn/winter. It's a tantalising prospect, with O'Brien adding: "It would be brilliant. I'm sure Stephen (Bradley) will say the exact same thing, that there's still loads of football to be played. Only two halves done, two halves to go.
