How do you make a Jurassic World movie? With these commandments

Mint9 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — If you're going to let dinosaurs run amok, it's good to have some ground rules.
That's how screenwriter David Koepp saw it, anyway, in penning the script for 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' which opens in theaters July 2. Koepp wrote the original 'Jurassic Park and its 1997 sequel, 'The Lost World. But 'Rebirth,' the seventh film in the franchise, marks his return to the franchise he helped birth.
And Koepp, the veteran screenwriter of 'Carlito's Way' and 'Mission: Impossible,' saw it as a chance to get a few things in order for a movie series that had perhaps strayed too far from its foundational character. Inspired by the animator Chuck Jones, Koepp decided to put down a list of nine commandments to guide 'Jurassic World Rebirth' and future installments.
Jones had done something similar for the Roadrunner cartoons. His 'commandments' included things like: the Roadrunner never speaks except to say 'meep meep"; the coyote must never catch him; gravity is the coyote's worst enemy; all products come from the ACME Corporation.
'I always thought those were brilliant as a set of organizing principles,' Koepp says. 'Things become easier to write when you have that, when you have a box, when you have rules, when you agree going in: 'These we will heed by.' So I wrote my own, nine of them.'
Koepp shared some — though not all of them — in a recent interview.
'I hate a retcon. I hate when they change a bunch of things: 'Oh, that didn't actually happen. It was actually his twin.' I don't like other timelines. So I thought: Let's not pretend any of the last 32 years didn't happen or happened differently than you thought. But we can say things have changed.'
'On the first movie, anyone working on the movie would get fined for referring to them as monsters. They're not monsters, they're animals. Therefore, because they're animals, their motives can only be because they're hungry or defending their territory. They don't attack because they're scary. They don't sneak up and roar because they want to scare you.'
'The tone that Steven (Spielberg) found and I helped find in that first movie is really distinctive. I haven't gotten to work on a movie with that tone since then. So to go back to that sense of high adventure, real science and humor, it was just kind of joyful.'
'And then there were a number of other rules that I would define as trade secrets. So I'll keep them to myself.'

Sean Diddy Combs' lawyer mocks sex trafficking case in closing, calls charges badly exaggerated

NEW YORK (AP) — Sean 'Diddy' Combs' lawyer implored a jury on Friday to acquit the hip-hop mogul, arguing overzealous federal prosecutors twisted his drug use and swinger lifestyle into a sex trafficking and racketeering case that could put him behind bars for life. 'He is none of these things. He is innocent,' defense attorney Marc Agnifilo said, glancing at Combs during a four-hour closing argument. "He sits there innocent. Return him to his family who have been waiting for him.' Jurors are expected to begin deliberating Monday. Agnifilo repeatedly mocked the government's case, peppering his presentation with folksy quips and bawdy observations. He said prosecutors 'badly exaggerated' the evidence, and he belittled federal agents who seized hundreds of bottles of baby oil and lubricant in raids last year at Combs' homes in Los Angeles and the Miami area. 'Way to go, fellas,' the defense lawyer said. Agnifilo accused the government of targeting Combs, irritating prosecutors and the judge, and questioned why no one else was charged in what the prosecution alleges was a racketeering conspiracy involving Combs' personal assistants, bodyguards and other employees. Judge Arun Subramanian instructed jurors they were not to consider why or how the government obtained an indictment. In a rebuttal, Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey said Agnifilo had spent 'a whole lot of energy' trying to distract from Combs' 'inexcusable behavior.' 'Make no mistake," Comey told jurors, "this trial was about how in Sean Combs' world, 'no' was never an option.' Agnifilo called Combs' prosecution a 'fake trial" and ridiculed the notion that the 'I'll Be Missing You' singer engaged in racketeering. 'Are you kidding me?' Agnifilo asked. 'Did any witness get on that witness stand and say, 'Yes, I was part of a racketeering enterprise — I engaged in racketeering?'' No, those accusations were a figment of the prosecution's imagination, he argued. Combs, in a sweater and khakis, watched Agnifilo with rapt attention after looking down and slouching during Thursday's prosecution closing. He didn't testify during the seven-week trial, and his lawyers called no witnesses of their own. Combs' family, including six of his children and his mother, sat behind him. When the day was finished, Combs hugged one of his lawyers and smiled as he conversed with others. As the jury filed out of the courtroom for the last time this week, Combs watched them, but the jurors didn't look his way. Combs' ex-girlfriends R&B singer Cassie and a woman testifying under the pseudonym 'Jane' told jurors that Combs coerced them into participating in 'freak-offs' or 'hotel nights' — drug-fueled sex marathons with male sex workers while Combs watched, directed, masturbated and sometimes filmed them. Agnifilo argued prosecutors had invaded Combs' most intimate personal affairs, warning jurors: 'Where's the crime scene? It's your sex life." He also mocked the prosecution's assertion that Combs and his underlings engaged in hundreds of racketeering acts, as well as the government's suggestion that many of the sex marathons at the heart of the case were crimes. If that's so, he said, 'we need a bigger roll of crime scene tape,' a reference to a famous line from the movie 'Jaws.' Agnifilo argued there's another factor at play in the allegations that women have lobbed against him: the prospect of draining him of his wealth through lawsuits. 'This isn't about crime. It's about money. This is about money," Agnifilo said. Cassie, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, sued Combs in November 2023 over abuse allegations. He settled with her the next day for $20 million, but the allegations prompted federal law enforcement to open the criminal investigation that led to his arrest. Dozens of other lawsuits followed. 'If you had to pick a winner in this whole thing, it's hard not to pick Cassie,' Agnifilo said. Agnifilo reiterated that the defense 'owns' the fact that Combs was violent but argued that behavior does not justify the grave charges against him. Combs and Cassie had a 'loving, beautiful relationship,' albeit a 'complicated' one, Agnifilo said. 'If racketeering conspiracy had an opposite, it would be their relationship." Agnifilo said. "They were deeply in love with each other." Echoing prosecutor Christy Slavik's closing argument on Thursday, Agnifilo showed jurors part of the now-infamous security camera footage of Combs attacking Cassie at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. Agnifilo acknowledged that the video clearly shows domestic violence, but he disputed the prosecution's theory that the assault was evidence of sex trafficking by force. He insisted Combs may have been angry not that Cassie was trying to flee a 'freak-off,' but that she was taking his cellphone. In her rebuttal, Comey said: 'Being a domestic abuser is not a defense to sex trafficking.'

Next James Bond? Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson top wishlist for Denis Villeneuve's film

As Amazon gears up for a new chapter in the iconic James Bond franchise, three young names are reportedly leading the race to wear the tux. According to a Variety report, Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi and Harris Dickinson are said to be high on the studio's wishlist to play the next 007. Insiders claim the next iteration of Bond will be under 30, signalling a major departure from recent portrayals. No formal meetings have taken place yet, and Amazon has not commented officially on the speculation. File photo of Tom Holland (AP) The casting buzz follows Amazon-MGM's announcement that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next Bond film. The Dune and Arrival filmmaker has reportedly beaten out contenders like Edward Berger (Conclave), Jonathan Nolan (Westworld), Paul King (Paddington) and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) for the job. Villeneuve, now working on Dune 3, expressed his excitement. 'I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,' he said in a statement. Earlier speculation had pointed to Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón stepping in, especially given his past work with producer David Heyman. But Cuarón opted out, choosing instead to direct Jane, a dark comedy starring Charlize Theron. Who's who on the 007 shortlist? Tom Holland, 29, best known for his role as Spider-Man, previously pitched a young Bond film to Sony during Spider-Man: Far From Home promotions. 'It didn't really make sense,' Holland admitted in 2022, adding that the Bond estate didn't seem keen on the idea. He's next seen in Nolan's The Odyssey and the fourth Spider-Man film. Harris Dickinson, known for Triangle of Sadness and Babygirl, recently earned praise for his directorial debut, Urchin, at Cannes. Asked in 2023 if he'd consider playing Bond, he replied, 'I mean, listen, man, you'd be a fool to not entertain that role.' Jacob Elordi, the only Australian of the three, may follow in George Lazenby's footsteps. The Euphoria and Priscilla actor is set to appear in Wuthering Heights, alongside Margot Robbie. Speaking last year, he called the Bond rumours 'beautiful,' adding, 'I just like that people maybe want to put me in their movies.' What happens next? The 26th Bond film is still in its early stages, and according to Variety, it won't hit theatres before 2028. Amazon MGM recently gained creative control of the franchise in a deal reportedly worth $1 billion. The upcoming film will be the first since Daniel Craig's swan song No Time to Die, which earned over $774 million worldwide. Earlier this year, Amy Pascal and David Heyman came on board as producers, signalling the franchise's ambitious new direction. All eyes now remain on who will step into one of cinema's most legendary roles. Box Office: F1 takes a promising start domestically on preview Thursday; Crushes India predictions but gets subdued response in China

Brad Pitt led F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski is buzzing, thanks to terrific reviews all across the board. The movie has started strong at the domestic box office by amassing little over USD 10 million from Thursday previews, which also includes paid fan screenings. This has set the movie up beautifully for a USD 55-65 million weekend. With very positive reception, we can expect the racing film to leg to USD 200 million, despite some stiff rivals in the form of Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman in the coming weeks. F1 Takes A Solid Start In North America; Movie Crushes Predictions In India But Not In China Internationally, the opening of F1 has been a mixed bag. In India, F1 has taken among the best starts for a non-IP Hollywood movie in India. As per early estimates, the movie's numbers are over Rs 5 crore net. It may even be Rs 6 crore but that shall be known by tomorrow when the final numbers come from all chains. This is an impressive number given the fact that the movie is sharing screenspace with big Indian movies - Sitaare Zameen Par, Maa and Kannappa. A weekend of Rs 20 crore net is on the cards and a Final Destination: Bloodlines like trend should propel this Brad Pitt movie to over Rs 60 crore net. In China, F1 has only grossed USD 2.6 million in two days. USD 900k came on Thursday while USD 1.7 million has come on Friday. The weekend of the movie looks to be around USD 7 million, strictly based on its positive reception. It is the third most preferred movie option of the weekend, below Detective Conan 28 and She's Got No Name. F1 Is A Pricey Movie And Needs Around USD 500 Million To Breakeven Theatrically Made at a production budget of over USD 200 million, the racing movie needs USD 500 million atleast for a theatrical breakeven. There's a lot of work required to get to this number but with the start, the movie may just fancy getting to that number. It is already projected to be Apple TV's biggest weekend opener, so that's a good note to open with. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates on F1.
