PSG Manager Luis Enrique Gives Bold Two-Word Approach Against Liverpool

Yahoo27-02-2025

Paris Saint-Germain advanced past Stade Briochin with a 7-0 win to punch their ticket to the Coupe de France semifinal. Nonetheless, in the postgame reaction, manager Luis Enrique was asked about Liverpool.
Championnat National 2 side Stade Briochin faced a tough challenge, conceding in the 16th minute. They held firm but couldn't keep PSG off the scoresheet, as Gonçalo Ramos doubled the lead.
After halftime, PSG took full control, with Désiré Doué playing a key role in the scoring surge. Ramos converted a penalty to kickstart the second-half onslaught.
Doué then found the net in the 55th minute before assisting goals from Ramos and Senny Mayulu. PSG didn't let up, with Ousmane Dembélé adding a fifth goal in the 66th minute.
Enrique spoke to beIN Sports after the match, and while he talked about the lopsided win, the Spanish boss was asked about Liverpool. Moreover, he revealed the mindset that he wanted the squad to have when heading into this tie as Enrique wants PSG to give the Reds a 'hard time.'
'Well, if we look at Liverpool, which, in theory, is in a transition year, they have a top-level coach and are one of the best teams in Europe,' Enrique told the network (h/t Culture PSG). 'With their results, they are at the top of the standings, etc. But I believe we will be in the competition, and we will give them a hard time. The goal is to fight until the end.'
The first leg will be next Wednesday, March 5, when PSG welcome Liverpool to the Parc des Princes. On March 11, the Parisians must travel to Anfield for the second leg.

Florian Wirtz reveals how Jeremie Frimpong taught him to speak English

Florian Wirtz says that Jeremie Frimpong is responsible for helping him speak English more fluently ahead of his move to Liverpool. The German playmaker has joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million, including £16m in potential add-ons. Advertisement Wirtz spoke perfect English in his first sit-down interview with the club, detailing his excitement at joining Liverpool and his goals for the future. Florian Wirtz reveals how Jeremie Frimpong taught him to speak English Frimpong, who was born in the Netherlands but spent most of his youth in Manchester, has also swapped Leverkusen for Anfield this summer. The pair developed a close bond as they sat next to each other in the dressing room, which helped Wirtz improve his language skills. When asked if Frimpong was responsible for teaching him English, he replied: 'Yes, he was my neighbour in the changing room, he sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him. Advertisement 'After I finished my school, I didn't speak really good English but he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English.' The 22-year-old is delighted to be reunited with Frimpong at the Premier League club after the wing-back completed a £29.5m transfer last month. 'I think it's a really nice thing that we can play together again at a new club, at maybe a bigger club, and make the move together. I'm really looking forward to standing on the pitch with him again.' It remains to be seen whether Frimpong can help Wirtz perfect the scouse accent, though. Wirtz added: 'I played, I think, three or four years with him. He's a really good player, a really good person, a really funny guy. Good for every changing room and also on the pitch, big qualities to attack and to defend. But I think I made my decision by my own, but it was maybe a small part that convinced me in the end as well.' Leverkusen 'proud' as they say farewell to Liverpool signing Wirtz

Germany's Florian Wirtz (L) and France's Manu Kone stand on the pitch after the UEFA Nations League soccer match between Germany and France at Stuttgart Arena. Federico Gambarini/dpa Bayer Leverkusen tried to look on the bright side and remember their achievements together after Florian Wirtz completed his move to Liverpool. The playmaker made his debut for the Germans aged 17 and went on to win a league and cup double with the club in 2024. An initial $134.7 million fee plus add-ons cushioned the blow for Leverkusen as the Germany international chose to test himself with the Premier League champions. Advertisement Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro said in a statement late on Friday: "Florian Wirtz developed from a very promising talent into a world-class player here with us. We are very proud of the path he has taken at Bayer 04. "Now we have to let him go. We will miss Florian but part of him will always be connected to Bayer 04. His sporting ability and his irrepressible commitment are an example and inspiration to us to show our full ambition to establish Bayer 04 at the top of German football and always strive to achieve the maximum success." Sporting director Simon Rolfes said the club had a special relationship with the attacking midfielder. "Florian's departure is associated with lots of emotions for the whole club and also for me personally. He came to us as a 16-year-old and he built up close and warm relations with many people at the club over the years," Rolfes remarked. Advertisement "Through his attitude, his passion and his unconditional desire to win he not only motivated and inspired his team-mates on the pitch but also the staff in the immediate vicinity of the team and throughout the club. Florian never played for himself." Wirtz, who was heavily linked with Bayern Munich before they were apparently priced out, could benefit from Liverpool not having a recognized number 10 while he also has the ability to play on the wings. Bayern observers worried he would get in the way of Jamal Musial if he had moved to the Allianz Arena. Now Liverpool have paid a club record fee for the 22-year-old. Wirtz told Leverkusen's website: "It's not easy to leave after five and a half great years. I've experienced unique things and incredible moments here at Leverkusen. The club always supported me and believed in me including during the difficult time with my injury." Advertisement Wirtz tore a knee ligament in March 2022. Leverkusen face a general rebuild having seen Bayern recapture their Bundesliga title in May. Coach Xabi Alonso has headed to Real Madrid and been replaced by former Manchester United and Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

Defender Linked to Liverpool Move as Slot Plans Backline Rebuild

Liverpool Eye Marc Guehi as Defensive Rebuild Accelerates Slot's Liverpool Keeps Making Moves Liverpool's summer spending spree continues to turn heads, with talkSPORT reporting that the Reds are now keen on adding Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi to their ranks. The move signals Arne Slot's intent to not only maintain the high standards set by his predecessor but also to begin shaping a new defensive era at Anfield. Advertisement 'talkSPORT understands that the Reds are now interested in signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.' And why wouldn't they be? With Guehi's current deal set to expire in 2026 and Crystal Palace seemingly preparing for life after him, Liverpool sense an opportunity to strike decisively. With Ousmane Diomande lined up as a potential record-breaking arrival at Selhurst Park, the London club may soon be willing to cash in. Photo IMAGO Defensive Departures Create Urgency Jarell Quansah's imminent move to Germany for around £25.6 million, as reported by talkSPORT, adds urgency to Liverpool's backline recruitment. 'Quansah is set to head to Germany in a deal worth approximately £25.6million,' the report claims. Joe Gomez's uncertain future and Ibrahima Konaté attracting interest from Real Madrid—his contract expiring next summer—only compounds the issue. Virgil van Dijk remains the only established centre-back with a secure long-term future at the club. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement Troy Deeney, the former Watford striker, spoke with enthusiasm about the potential move. 'I think he would work great next to Van Dijk, that's a long-term succession plan for Liverpool,' he stated. 'But Liverpool are not messing about. I do think Liverpool have laid it down to everybody now, saying: 'This is what we're going to do, come and catch us if you can'.' Smart Spending, Serious Intent Liverpool's transfer strategy appears aggressive, but also smart. While their gross spending may already be nearing £185 million, sales are offsetting the outlay. 'It's actually not going to be a huge net spend either,' said Deeney. With Caoimhin Kelleher moving to Brentford for up to £18 million and Robertson linked with Atlético Madrid, significant funds are being recouped. 'They've had Kelleher leave, talk of Robertson going, so there's going to be a few to make sure they don't spend as much as it sounds,' Deeney added. With Wirtz's £116.5 million arrival, Kerkez's £40 million switch from Bournemouth nearing completion, and Jeremie Frimpong already through the door, this is a statement summer from the Premier League champions. Marc Guehi's Value and Palace's Dilemma What complicates Liverpool's pursuit is Guehi's valuation. Newcastle had four bids rejected last summer, the final being a staggering £65 million. 'That ended up with them walking away from negotiations, as Palace had asked for even more money,' notes talkSPORT. Liverpool will be aware of the challenges, but Guehi's contract situation may offer leverage. Advertisement Palace are planning, bracing themselves for big-name exits, with either Guehi or Eberechi Eze expected to move on. 'I think Crystal Palace are going to lose either Guehi or [Eberechi] Eze, whichever they decide to let go,' said Deeney. Slot's Liverpool are playing with a clear identity—invest, refresh, and challenge again. Guehi could be the latest piece of that puzzle, offering quality, leadership and Premier League experience. Our View – EPL Index Analysis If Liverpool really do land Marc Guehi this summer, it would be a monumental signing for the Arne Slot era. With Van Dijk not getting any younger and the club facing uncertainty over Gomez, Quansah and Konaté, this isn't just a luxury signing—it's a necessity. Advertisement Guehi is quick, composed on the ball and a natural leader, and you can't underestimate how vital that will be in a side transitioning post-Klopp. Palace may have overplayed their hand last summer with Newcastle, but this year, Liverpool hold the cards. A year left on his deal, a potential replacement already lined up, and the lure of Champions League football—Palace might have to settle for less than their previous £65 million demands. From a fan's perspective, seeing the club spend big on talent like Wirtz and possibly Guehi, while keeping the net spend down, shows we've got a proper structure behind the scenes. Slot seems to have authority already, and that's encouraging. Guehi next to Van Dijk? That's a mouth-watering prospect. Let's just get it done.
