Jota death to be marked by minute's silence at Portugal Women's Euro 2025 game
"One of our own," Portugal forward Jessica Silva posted on Instagram. "Diogo wasn't just a star. It was the good, the faithful, the attentive, the simple ... of those who don't need noise to mark their presence!
"Football has gone poorer ... and so are we. You will never be forgotten."
UEFA announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all of Thursday and Friday's Women's Euro 2025 matches "in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away today," European soccer's governing body said on Thursday.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said in a statement on Thursday that it had requested a minute's silence before the game against Spain.
Hours before kick-off, virtually every player on the Portugal women's squad had posted photos of Jota on social media, many with broken heart emojis.
Veteran defender Ana Borges, who is the most capped player in the women's national team's history, wrote "Descansem em paz" - rest in peace - under a photo of both brothers.
Pedro Proenca, President of the FPF, gave a brief statement at the women's team base camp in Bern, saying that 28-year-old Jota was "Much more than a fantastic player.
"With almost 50 appearances for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community," Proenca said.

We've had that many different managers, ideas and strategies in order to win that you end up in no man's land." United have not won the Premier League title since 2012-13, the last season of manager Alex Ferguson's career before he retired, while Liverpool have now equalled their tally of 20 league titles. United's managerial carousel since Ferguson's exit has included David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, with each bringing vastly different playing styles. "When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team but they were for the whole academy," Rashford said. "They'd all understand the principles of playing the Man United way. Any team that's been successful over a period of time, they have principles that mean that any coach or player that comes in has to align to or add to the principles." United have won several cups since their last league title, but Rashford attributed them to squad quality rather than systematic success. "At times, I feel like United were hungry to win so we'll always try to adapt and sign players that fit the system. But that was reactionary," Rashford added. "If your direction is always changing you can't expect to win the league. You might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you have a good coach, good players and match winners in your team."

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has also been criticised by some Bayern fans for not doing enough to integrate more academy-grown younger players into the senior team.

Newcastle sign German defender Thiaw from Milan
Newcastle United have signed German defender Malick Thiaw from Serie A side AC Milan, the Premier League club said late on Tuesday. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reports said Newcastle paid a transfer fee worth around 34.6 million pounds ($46.69 million) for the 24-year-old. Thiaw was a key part of Milan's defensive line-up last season, making 31 appearances across all competitions, but featured less frequently towards the end of their Serie A campaign as they suffered a disappointing eighth-placed finish. He has also played three times for Germany, with all three of those appearances coming in 2023. "We're really pleased to have Malick on board.
