On July 21, the BMC increased the penalty for potholes found in the vicinity of Ganpati pandals post-festival to Rs 15,000 from Rs 2,000.
The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvaya Samiti, which represents Ganpati mandals across Mumbai, on Sunday requested the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to remove the recent increase in fines for potholes near Ganpati pandals—from Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 per pothole.
According to a report by The Hindustan Times citing advocate Naresh Dahibawkar, chairman of the Samiti, the increase in the fine will put an unfair financial strain on the organisers of Ganesh festival celebrations.
'Such strict enforcement is not there even for contractors who construct poor roads. We will follow up with both the BMC and the state government to seek cancellation of the fine," said Dahibawkar, according to the HT report.
Ganeshotsav
'The very essence of this festival is rooted in social unity, nationalism, the spirit of freedom, self-respect, and pride in our language," he said.

How Himachal's ‘1 Bride, 2 Grooms' Tradition Works: Wife Decides — Same Room Or ‘Shoe Sign' At Door

Sunita Chauhan married brothers Pradeep and Kapil Negi in a polyandrous wedding in Himachal Pradesh, sparking debates on the ancient custom of Jodidara. In parts of Himachal Pradesh, there exists a tradition that has its roots in the Mahabharata. If you couldn't guess it, we are talking about Jodidara, aka an ancient custom of polyandry where a woman willfully gets married to two men. Recently, two brothers from Shillai village of Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, got married to the same woman in accordance with rituals followed by the Hatti tribe. The incident has now grabbed the spotlight, with debates emerging around the concept of polyandrous weddings. On July 12, the bride, Sunita Chauhan, married brothers Pradeep and Kapil Negi, as a joint decision without any external pressure. The three-day event, which wrapped up on July 14, was celebrated with several 'Jajda" customs. As per a report by The Times of India, a priest performed 'Seenj", chanted mantras, sprinkled holy water and offered jaggery to invoke blessings from the Kul Devta (family deity). How Jodidara Works The practice of Jodidara is acknowledged in Himachal Pradesh's revenue laws. It is also linked to Sections 494 and 495 of the Indian Penal Code as a part of marital relationships. According to a PhD thesis titled Polyandry in the Himalayas: Social-economic background of Himalayan Polyandry, published by former chief minister YS Parmer, the wife has complete autonomy in deciding how time is distributed among her husbands. YS Parmer further explained that sometimes a shoe or a cap is placed outside the room to indicate that the wife is with one particular husband. 'In most cases, the wife sleeps with all her husbands in the same room… she decides, according to her own wish, which husband to be with that night. However, she performs her duties with each brother in turn. Typically, equal time is given to all husbands. Complaints rarely arise," wrote Parmer, as quoted by Hindustan Times. top videos View all Why Polyandry Exists In Himachal Pradesh Polyandry persists in Himachal Pradesh even in modern times due to social, cultural and economic factors. How Congress Move To Muzzle Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari May Backfire In Op Sindoor Debate

While Congress started off confidently, Home Minister Amit Shah's speech on Operation Mahadev may have put the party on the backfoot. Silence speaks volumes. It often ends up silencing those who want to make noise. The Operation Sindoor debate in Parliament began with the Congress party feeling confident. They believed they had two issues to silence the government on. Firstly, Trump's claim that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Secondly, the whereabouts of the Pahalgam terrorists. The Congress wanted to highlight these issues and silence the 'dissenters,' specifically party MPs Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari. Both were part of the multi-party delegation for the Narendra Modi government's outreach programme after Operation Sindoor. However, they irked their party by being chosen as representatives by the government. They were not Congress's official choices, leading to a distancing of the Congress from these two. It was not evident at first that Congress did not want them to speak on the Operation Sindoor debate. Most of the delegation members, like DMK MP Kanimozhi, NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule, and BJP MP Tejaswi Surya, did speak. However, Tewari and Tharoor did not. But does Congress have the last laugh? Home Minister Amit Shah provided details of Operation Mahadev, addressing Congress's allegations and questions on 'where are the terrorists?" Both Tharoor and Manish do not wish to openly confront their party and will remain silent for now. However, their discontent is evident. Their supporters argue that, being astute politicians, they would have spoken like Indians, without necessarily embarrassing their party. The issue was that Congress lacked confidence in them. This led to their silencing. Ironically, Congress now finds itself at a loss for words regarding Operation Sindoor. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
