Rednote joins wave of Chinese firms releasing open-source AI models

BEIJING: China's Rednote, one of the country's most popular social media platforms, has released an open-source large language model, joining a wave of Chinese tech firms making their artificial intelligence models freely available.
The approach contrasts with many US tech giants like OpenAI and Google, which have kept their most advanced models proprietary, though some American firms including Meta have also released open-source models.
Open sourcing allows Chinese companies to demonstrate their technological capabilities, build developer communities and spread influence globally at a time when the US has sought to stymie China's tech progress with export restrictions on advanced semiconductors.
Rednote's model, called dots.llm1, is available for download on developer platform Hugging Face. A company technical paper describing it was uploaded on Friday.
In coding tasks, the model performs comparably to Alibaba's Qwen 2.5 series, though it trails more advanced models such as DeepSeek-V3, the technical paper said.
RedNote, also known by its Chinese name Xiaohongshu, is an Instagram-like platform where users share photos, videos, text posts and live streams. The platform gained international attention earlier this year when some US users flocked to the app amid concerns over a potential TikTok ban.
The company has invested in large language model development since 2023, not long after OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in late 2022.
It has accelerated its AI efforts in recent months, launching Diandian, an AI-powered search application that helps users find content on Xiaohongshu's main platform.
Other companies that are pursuing an open-source approach include Alibaba which launched Qwen 3, an upgraded version of its model in April.
Earlier this year, startup DeepSeek released its low-cost R1 model as open-source software, shaking up the global AI industry due to its competitive performance despite being developed at a fraction of the cost of Western rivals.

CHIN Hin Group Bhd, Malaysia's leading integrated constriction conglomerate, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jiangsu Teeyer Intelligent Equipment Co Ltd, a leading global provider of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) production systems listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The MOU entered into through the group's wholly-owned subsidiary Starken AAC Sdn Bhd signifies Chin Hin's strategic expansion into its third AAC manufacturing facility which is set to be situated adjacent to the group's existing factory in Serendah, Selangor. Scheduled for full production by May 31 next year, the new facility will significantly elevate the Chim Hin's production capabilities by adding a capacity of over one million cubic metres per year. Listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange with a RM3.2 mil market capitalisation, Teeyer is globally acclaimed for its expertise in AAC production systems. With over 35 years in the industry and having exported nearly 150 production lines to over 20 countries, Teeyer is recognised for pioneering technological advancements such as the MES system for precise production management and being the first Chinese company to localise AAC cutting machinery. Currently, Chin Hin's two existing AAC plants have a combined production capacity of about 1.2 million cubic metres. With the addition of this third facility, the group's total AAC production capacity will rise to over 2.2 million cubic metres annually, hence further consolidating its leadership in the building materials industry. 'This strategic partnership with Teeyer is a significant milestone for Chin Hin as it substantially enhances our production capabilities and strengthens our competitive edge in the market,' commented Chin Hin Group's CEO (Building Materials Division) Ng Wai Luen. The company, which also makes Hot Wheels and Uno cards, plans to "bring the magic of AI to age-appropriate play experiences with an emphasis on innovation, privacy, and safety," it said. The move comes at a time when toy manufacturers are battling muted demand backdrop as consumers rein in spending to brace for the economic fallout of U.S. President Trump's shifting trade policy. Mattel will also incorporate OpenAI's advanced AI tools like ChatGPT Enterprise into its business operations to enhance product innovation, the company said. "With OpenAI, Mattel has access to an advanced set of AIcapabilities alongside new tools to enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation at scale," said OpenAI operating chief Brad Lightcap. Over the last year, Mattel has relied on producing films, TV shows and mobile games based on its products such as Hot Wheels and Barbie to offset a slowdown in its core toy business. Last month, Mattel withdrew its annual forecast and said it would raise prices on some products sold domestically in a bid to mitigate higher supply chain costs. This marks an additional investment of $30 billion, beyond prior plans, Micron said, sending its shares down about 1% in premarket trading. Micron now joins a litany of U.S. tech firms and chipmakers who have announced hundreds of billions of dollars in domestic investments against the backdrop of Trump's efforts to produce more semiconductors on American soil. AI chip leader and Micron customer Nvidia said in April it is planning to build AI servers worth as much as $500 billion in the U.S. over the next four years with help from partners such as Taiwan's TSMC . Micron's additional investment will center around building a second leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho and expanding a manufacturing facility in Manassas, Virginia. "These investments are designed to allow Micron to meet expected market demand, maintain share and support Micron's goal of producing 40% of its DRAM in the U.S," the company said, referring to a type of widely employed memory chip. Micron's investment aims to bring advanced packaging capabilities to the U.S.- a manufacturing technique essential to high bandwidth memory (HBM), which is employed extensively in the AI market, the company said. HBM is often characterized as a type of stacked DRAM technology. "Micron's investment in advanced memory manufacturing and HBM capabilities in the U.S., with support from (the) Trump administration, is an important step forward for the AI ecosystem," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement.
