A veteran stock-car driver at a North Carolina short track died over the weekend after suffering a medical emergency while competing in a race, officials said.
Robbie Brewer's car struck head-on a wall on the quarter-mile (0.40-kilometer) track at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem and came to a stop near the start-finish line.
Track workers peeled away the roof to remove 53-year-old Brewer, and an ambulance took him to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital, after which he died, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.
'We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer after he was transported to an area medical facility following an on-track medical incident,' track officials said Sunday in a statement. "Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie's family and friends at this time.'
Details of the medical emergency weren't released.
Brewer was competing in a 20-lap Sportsman Series race at Bowman Gray, where thousands of racing fans turn out weekly on Saturday nights in the spring and summer for races across four divisions. Bowman Gray also was the locale for this year's preseason NASCAR Cup Series exhibition event in early February.
Brewer's first career start at the oval came in 1990, and he made nearly 260 starts in the Sportsman Division, winning the points championship in 2011, the newspaper reported.
Fellow Bowman Gray driver Brad Lewis, whose race shop is near where Brewer lived, said Brewer "was like a big brother to me even though we were not that far apart in age.'
'He was a wheelman through and through,' Lewis said. 'I'm not only going to honor him the rest of the season but for as long as we race out there. He'll be missed.'

Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann set for LIV title showdown

August 13 - By Field Level Media Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm will go head-to-head this weekend for the LIV Golf individual title at the regular-season finale, LIV Golf Indianapolis, and both said Wednesday they are ready for the next round of their respectful rivalry. Niemann enters the 54-hole tournament with a lead of 12.27 points. Thanks to LIV's well-explained scoring system, Rahm knows exactly what he must do to overtake Niemann and defend his individual championship. Rahm took home a bonus of $18 million last year with his season win. Niemann (Torque GC captain) and Rahm (Legion XIII captain) are the only players still in the running for the individual championship. Niemann will win the title with a finish of first or second at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, Ind. If Rahm wins the tournament, he still needs Niemann to finish third or worse to earn the championship again. "He's a fantastic competitor, fantastic golfer, great person as well," Rahm said. "It's a lot of fun to share the stage with him. "He's obviously been playing great golf, and even though I was able to get the best of him last year, he certainly made the job hard this year." LIV has a half-dozen other scenarios drawn out to determine who wins the individual crown depending on other finishing places. Winning the Indianapolis event would remove the need for any calculations for Niemann, a 26-year-old from Chile who has won five times to set a LIV single-season record. He attributes his success, in part, to his frequent pairings with Rahm. "It's been a lot of growing in my game. I feel like playing against Jon -- I've been playing with him for probably 60, 70 percent of my pairings this year (and) he's a great competitor," Niemann said. "He's always there. He never gives a shot away. It's fun to play with someone that pushes you to be better and to go back home and try to get better and come back here and try to beat him." Rahm, 30, hasn't been in the individual winner's circle this season but the native of Spain finds himself in contention on the final weekend because of his consistency. He has three runner-ups and just one finish outside the Top 10 - a T11 in Dallas. He lost to Dean Burmester in a playoff last Sunday at LIV Golf Chicago. "I feel like in a weird way, it should be more one-sided with what he was able to do, with how many wins he's had this year," Rahm said. "I guess consistency can pay off, but man, winning five times anywhere, anytime is incredible. My hat's off to him to what he's been able to do. Hopefully I can get the job done this week and pull off the upset. Rahm said he likes being paired with Niemann. "It's somebody that's a lot of fun to play with," he said. "I think both of us being Spanish speakers, it's just a little level of comfort that we have and just admire his game as well. It's just fun to watch him play golf." According to LIV Golf, Niemann has a 58.7 percent chance of winning the title, leaving Rahm with a 41.3 percent chance. Niemann isn't playing the odds. Just his game. "You've just got to worry about what you can control. There's nothing else you can worry about," he said. "I feel like the process you have through your shot, the routine that you have through the week, and at the end of the day, there is not much you can do. You can't force a result. You can't. We all know that. "I feel like it's no more than that." Bryson DeChambeau (Crushers GC captain) enters the weekend with a grip on third place -- he's 55-plus points behind Rahm -- but doesn't have a mathematical grip on the spot or the bonus money that comes with it. He's become a fan of the Niemann-Rahm competition week in and week out. "It's really impressive. The level of competition they bring to LIV is out of control. It makes it almost impossible for some guys," said DeChambeau, 31, who has two career LIV individual wins. "So that's what we need. We need continued push by those guys at the top to showcase what the best in the world look like, and couldn't be more proud of those individuals for leading the way in that regard, and hopefully I can be at the top next year and give myself a chance. "But what they're doing is great for LIV, it's great for golf, and honestly, I think whoever wins ... it's going to be an awesome feat and historical year for either one of those individuals."

The Marshall Islands gearing up for historic international football match

Marshall Islands assistant manager Justin Walley admits the actuality of kicking off the country's first ever international football match still feels like a dream. The Marshall Islands have long claimed to be 'the last nation on earth without a football team', and did not even have a federation until 2020, let alone the national set-up which has only existed for the last two and a half years. For some members of the squad, Thursday's meeting with the US Virgin Islands at the Outrigger Challenge Cup in Arkansas will be their first competitive game of 11 v 11 football – ever. 'There's a sort of unrealness to it that we can't believe it's actually happening,' Leicestershire-born Walley, who now lives in Bosnia and Herzegovina, told the PA news agency. 'But we've been working very hard and we're really focused on what's ahead of us. We've already had several days of hard work and planning. Hopefully we will be as ready as we can be.' Springdale, Arkansas might seem like an odd choice of location for the Marshall Islands-hosted four-team tournament, but it is an area which, as of 2019, boasted the highest concentration of Marshallese in continental United States. Some members of the squad have been recruited from Majuro, the Kwajalein Atoll, and other parts of the Marshall Islands itself, with its population of around 37,500 – and no club football. Several team members have moved to the United States, where some play for US colleges, while others have Marshallese heritage. Their technical director and head coach, Lloyd Owers, who joined in 2022, is based in Oxfordshire. As far as they are aware, the Marshall Islands is the only recognised UN member state not to have played an 11 v 11 international fixture. Some local to Majuro participated in an initial team meeting 18 months ago, but, revealed Walley: 'In terms of an actual national team training camp, this is the first one we have ever done. 'The guys flew in on Friday and Saturday, the first training session ever was on Saturday. We're trying to cram in five days of camp to be ready. 'We try to train like we would with any normal club side. We just try to develop what we've got. Some of the guys do play club football, some have never played 11-a-side. They've played futsal. 'We've been developing that all week, we've played a few sort of mini-games, so it's not as if they (will have) never played 11-a-side before, they will be ready.' Walley hopes what started out as a group of men with a vision – but no infrastructure – will lead to FIFA recognition by 2030 at the latest, though the first step is acceptance into a confederation. Funding for their big international debut has come from sponsorship, a £21,573 crowdfunding campaign, and about 2000 shirts sold over the last couple of years. 'I think people weren't taking us seriously,' admits Walley, who says the side want to give 'the best account of themselves possible' in their historic match. He added: 'They weren't thinking that we could possibly pull this off, playing national teams. We've come a long, long way in a short time.'
