'Family comes first': Liam Martin withdraws from rep games to be by partner's side
Martin told the on Thursday he'll be staying home in Australia for the birth of his first child. 'We're due in October – I'm pretty excited – but it means I'll probably have to pull out of the Ashes,' Martin said. 'Given it's the first baby, I don't want to miss it. If it was in Australia, I'd definitely play, but given it's on the other side of the world, Chelsea could divorce me before we're even married.
Martin missed last year's Pacific Championships tournament due to a shoulder injury, but has been a walk-up starter for the Kangaroos whenever he's been available. He admitted he hadn't told anyone in the Kangaroos hierarchy because the national team is currently without a coach.
"I love pulling on that green and gold jersey, but family comes first, so I made the decision early on," he added. 'You hear the boys with kids speak about life having extra meaning after [having kids], and who you play the game for. It's been in the back of my mind this year how I'll need to try and leave a legacy for the family that they can be proud of.'
Making Martin's decision easier is the uncertainty surrounding the Ashes series. Mal Meninga was forced to step down as Kangaroos coach when he agreed to take on the Perth Bears job, and Brad Fittler withdrew from contention this week when he was thought to be the front-runner.
Fittler then made telling comments that nothing had been organised by ARL officials in terms of accommodation, training facilities and logistical issues, despite the tour being just three months away. Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters now appear to be in a two-horse race to become the next Kangaroos coach, although whispers have emerged that Wayne Bennett could get the job if the NRL breaks it's own rules.
The NRL and ARL Commission have always insisted a club or State of Origin coach can't hold the Kangaroos role because it doesn't allow for enough time and focus. But leading reporter Phil Rothfield revealed this week he believes that rule will be broken and Bennett will get the gig.
Rothfield said he thinks the Commission will allow Bennett to lead the Kangaroos in a caretaker capacity just for the Ashes series, before appointing a full-time coach after that. Speaking on NRL 360 on Wednesday night, fellow journalist James Hooper said: 'I think they need to get the best candidate in all seriousness, and if that means changing this outdated rule that we can't have a club coach anymore, so be it. I wouldn't have an issue if it was Wayne or Ricky (Stuart) or (Craig) Bellamy."

Bradford youngster kicks off new TV show with Lionesses
A YOUNG Bradford actor features in a new football TV show alongside star players from England's Lionesses. Daya Singh Athwal, 12, is in CBeebies series Football Fantastics, which starts tomorrow. The live-action scripted series is described as "a high-energy, feel-good comedy that celebrates friendship, fun, and the beautiful game". Set in Yorkshire, it follows six children who come together every weekend at their local football group, where friendships are forged and epic adventures unfold both on and off the pitch. The series, produced by Strike, the team behind CBBC hit series Jamie Johnson FC, features cameos from Lionesses including Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly, Fran Kirby and BBC Sports Personality of the Year Beth Mead, as well as cameos from England's Olly Watkins and former Millwall and Leyton Orient player Charlotte Lynch in her acting debut - plus special regular guest star, former England goalkeeper Jill Scott. Daya, who attends drama classes at Baildon-based drama school and acting agency, Articulate Agency, has had roles in the Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds, two TV commercials and short films Raj's Story and The Boat Story. "Being part of the Football Fantastics was amazing," said Daya. "I got to do two of my favourite things at once - play football and act! I had so much fun and learned a lot too. My weekly drama classes with Articulate and LAMDA lessons really helped me to feel confident on set and bring my character to life." Football Fantastics comes to CBeebies and BBC iPlayer in line with BBC's Summer of Sport and the Women's Euros. Forest 'clearly not interested' in selling Elanga
BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Fray believes Nottingham Forest have no desire to sell Anthony Elanga to Newcastle this transfer window. Neto a doubt after Jota death
Pedro Neto was given compassionate leave as Chelsea did a minute's silence for Jota in training on Thursday night [Getty Images] Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says it's "completely" Pedro Neto's decision whether he wants to play in the Club World Cup after his international team-mate Diogo Jota died in a car crash on Thursday. Neto, 25, lined up with Jota for his former club Wolves and country Portugal and was absent from the final training session in Miami ahead of an upcoming quarter-final against Palmeiras. Advertisement The Blues had given Neto an indefinite period of compassionate leave after news filtered through that Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, both died in a car crash in the Spanish province of Zamora. When asked for his reaction to Jota's passing and to explain the situation around Neto, Maresca said: "It's a very sad day. I struggle to find words, you feel a little bit helpless in this kind of situation, and the only thing I can say is all my love to his family and it's a big tragedy for them." He added: "Then, in terms of Pedro, he's very sad, probably more than sad, but we are also close to Pedro to support him in this moment. "It's completely Pedro's decision (whether he plays). I had a chat this morning with Pedro. We support him. Any decision he will take is the correct one, and we are going to support him in any case. "We will see how he is feeling tomorrow, it doesn't matter if he will be on the pitch or not." "But we are very happy with Joao and we will see if we need him tomorrow or we're going to give him some minutes."
