Tiranga rally held with 1000-ft national flag
Marking the occasion a massive rally (Tiranga Rally) with a 1000-feet mammoth national flag was taken out in a colourful possession by the students from various colleges in the city.
District Collector Dr S Venkateswar along with Municipal Corporation Commissioner Narapureddy Mourya flagged off the rally which began at TTD Mahati Auditorium near town club and culminated into a meeting at Tarakarama Stadium.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said the youth should not be limited to mere celebrations carrying national flags to show their patriotism but should play a proactive role in nation development. Responding to the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and endorsed by the State government, this year the Independence Day will be celebrated for two weeks.
Accordingly, people should participate in the celebrations by hoisting the national flag in every village and in all towns and cities. On the occasion, the Collector said everyone more so the youth should take part in a cleanliness drive to see their neighbourhood, streets and the city be clean.
Collector lauded the Way Foundation, an NGO for providing the 1000-feet long national flag to the tiranga rally.
Municipal Commissioner Mourya said hitherto the Independence Day celebrations were only held in government offices, schools and colleges but now the tiranga flag was seen on the houses as people are voluntarily reflecting their patriotism. This patriotic spirit should be promoted and channeled into constructive works. Particularly, to make the city clean and green for a healthy environment.
Greenery and Beautification chairperson Sugunamma, Yadava Corporation Chairman Narasimha Yadav, Urban Development Corporation Director Vooka Vijay Kumar, Deputy Mayor R C Munikrishna, SVU Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao, Tourism R D Ramana Prasad and Additional Commissioner Charan Tej Reddy were present.

‘A dream comes true after 40-45 years of struggle': CJI inaugurates HC bench in Kolhapur
Chief Justice of India B R Gavai inaugurated a circuit bench of the Bombay High Court in Kolhapur on Sunday and said that the dream of lawyers and citizens has finally come true after decades of struggle. 'This is the day when the dream of lawyers and citizens for a high court has come true after a 40-45 years of struggle,' he said, highlighting the efforts and hardships that went into getting the high court bench in Kolhapur. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, state ministers Chandrakant Patil and Hasan Mushrif, Congress MP Shrimant Shahu Maharaj, Sangli MP Vishal Patil, MLC Satej Patil, Bombay High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and local MLAs, representatives of various Advocates Bar Associations were present at the inaugural function. The Kolhapur bench is the fourth bench of the Bombay High Court. It has other benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), and neighbouring state of Goa. A notification for setting up of the Kolhapur circuit bench was issued by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe on August 1. The bench has come up after demands from litigants and lawyers who have to travel over 300-350 km all the way to Mumbai. The bench, which will start functioning from Monday, will hear matters relating to PILs, civil writ petitions, first appeals, family court appeals and other civil and criminal cases from six districts— Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, the CJI said, 'Through the Kolhapur circuit bench, the common man will get social and financial justice. The circuit bench should soon make way for a Bombay High Court bench.' The CJI said the lawyers from six districts struggled for years to get the HC bench in Kolhapur. 'The people and lawyers from these districts struggled for 40-45 years, demanding the high court. Some of the old-time lawyers have passed away. When a committee was formed to find out whether the HC bench could be set up, two judges gave conflicting reports. However, the report of judge Ranjit More who suggested setting up of the HC bench in Kolhapur was accepted. Finally, after 11 years the day has dawned,' he said. The CJI said that he pursued the matter after taking charge on May 14. 'I have always believed that justice should reach the doorstep of the people..I had told the high court chief justice that the bench should be set up by August… We then decided that we should set up the Kolhapur bench a day after Independence Day. We decided that people should get freedom from their problems in getting justice and therefore the bench should be set up as soon as possible,' he said. The CJI praised the state government and the public works department for setting up the bench in a short period of time. 'The building of the high court bench was set up in barely 20-25 days. The old grandeur of the building has been retained. The public works department led by Shivendraraje Bhosale has done outstanding work. This should actually make it to the Guinness Book of World Records… Those who said Maharashtra was behind in judicial infrastructure have been given a befitting reply,' he said. The CJI said that HC Chief Justice Alok Aradhe was not confident that the Kolhapur bench would be set up in August. 'He (Aradhe) is possibly not aware of the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister. May be because of the newspaper reports which said Maharashtra was lagging in ensuring proper judicial infrastructure. He had doubts whether the Maharashtra government would be able to set up the bench by August 15. However, the CM assured us that it would be ready by August 15,' he said. 'I am of the opinion that Maharashtra is not behind when it comes to judiciary's infrastructure. Government is always behind the judiciary when it comes to infrastructure,' the CJI said. CJI Gavai stated that the Kohapur bench will ensure social and economic justice for the common man. 'The Kolhapur bench will ensure social and economic justice for the common man. The setting up of the bench is a good opportunity for budding lawyers. A hostel should also be set up for them at the circuit bench.' Expressing happiness over the high court bench being set up on the land of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the CJI said, 'It was Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj who had given 50 per cent reservation to the people from Backward Class for the first time. It was Shahu Maharaj who put a stop to devdasi system. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj had said that whatever wealth we have it is meant for others. And therefore we celebrate his birth anniversary as Social Justice Day.' Chief Minister Fadnavis, in his address, termed the setting up of the circuit bench of the high court in Kolhapur 'historical'. 'The 50 year old struggle of lawyers and people from Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg has finally culminated with the inauguration of the circuit bench of the high court in Kolhapur,' he said. Fadnavis said that in his first term as chief minister, the state cabinet had decided to set up the high court bench in Kolhapur on May 12, 2015. 'When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kolhapur for an event, a request to set up the bench in Kolhapur was placed before him. After that, Chandrakant Patil had led an all-party delegation to me pressing for the HC bench in Kolhapur. The state government then pursued the matter with the Bombay High Court. We told the HC that we were ready to set up the judicial infrastructure. However, things picked up after CJI Bhushan Gavai took charge. He himself personally monitored the progress of the circuit bench plan,' Fadnavis said. The Chief Minister said his government would soon bring in a law to ensure safety of advocates. INDIA bloc mulls impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar amid Rahul Gandhi's ‘Vote Chori' row
The Opposition INDIA bloc is planning to move an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The move will escalate the Opposition's confrontation with the Election Commission amid Rahul Gandhi's 'Vote Chori' allegation. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain told news agency ANI that the party is ready to use all democratic tools, including an impeachment motion if needed, though no formal discussions have been held so far. "If there is a need, we will use all the weapons of democracy under the rules. We have not had any discussions (about impeachment) as of now, but if needed, we can do anything," Hussain told ANI. While the Congress and other parties are in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, a 14-day notice period is a requirement for initiating an impeachment process against a President or Vice President in India and the CEC, as per the law. The Monsoon Session of Parliament resumed after Independence Day break on Monday. The INDIA bloc continued to protest against issued, including Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR). 'The ECI cannot relinquish its Constitutional duty and evade genuine queries of political parties. The 'Right to Vote' is the most important right, given to us by the Constitution of India. INDIA will protest any attempt to stifle Democracy,' Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post on X. The decision comes a day after Kumar rebuked Rahul Gandhi over his 'Vote Chori' allegation and urged the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha to either sign an affidavit or apologise to the nation for his remarks, which he described as an 'insult' to the Constitution of India. The Election Commission's remarks came on a day when Rae Bareli Member of Parliament (MP) Rahul Gandhi launched his 1,300 km-long 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from poll-bound Bihar's Sasaram to step up the Opposition INDIA bloc's campaign against its 'Vote Chori' (vote theft) claims. The CEC can only be removed in the same manner as a Supreme Court judge, requiring a motion of impeachment by Parliament, according to Article 324(5) of the Constitution. On 7 August, Rahul Gandhi had alleged 'vote chori (theft)' of 1,00,250 votesin an assembly of a Karnataka Lok Sabha constituency, with 11,965 duplicate voters in the segment, 40,009 voters with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters or single-address voters, 4,132 voters with invalid photos. After Sunday's press conference by CEC, the Opposition, Congress leader Pawan Khera said the remarks sounded like those of a BJP functionary rather than an independent constitutional authority. 'It seemed like BJP was speaking today. Did he give any response about the one lakh voters we exposed in Mahadevapura?' Khera asked. RJD leader Manoj Jha accused the Commission of ducking 'burning questions' while JMM MP Mahua Maji asked the poll body to clarify the authenticity of documents presented by Gandhi in his press conference. The INDIA bloc had moved an impeachment against former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in December. The motion was rejected. Dhankhar quit as Vice President on 21 July. PM's Diwali Dhamaka may come as GST cuts on small cars, insurance premiums
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Diwali 'dhamaka' for consumers may come in the form of cuts in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on small cars and insurance premiums. According to a report by Reuters, citing government sources, Centre has proposed lowering GST on small petrol and diesel cars to 18 per cent from 28 per cent, and reducing GST on health and life insurance premiums to 5 per cent from the current 18 per cent, or even exempting them entirely. If cleared, the relief package could be unveiled before Diwali in October, India's busiest retail season, and just weeks ahead of the Bihar Assembly election. PM Modi, in his Independence Day address, promised 'next generation' GST reforms to ease the burden on consumers and micro, small and medium enterprises. Larger GST overhaul in the works PM Modi's rationalisation agenda is built on three pillars, the Reuters report said. This includes structural reforms, rate simplification, and ease of living. It seeks to correct inverted duty structures, reduce classification disputes, and eventually move towards a simplified two-slab structure with standard and merit rates while phasing out the 12 per cent slab. Moreover, as the compensation cess on luxury and sin goods is set to end, the Centre sees an opportunity to use that room to cut GST on everyday and aspirational products without hurting revenues. Compensation cess expiry and GST review Compensation cess refers to the extra levy introduced in 2017 on luxury and sin goods such as coal, tobacco, aerated drinks, and large cars. It was designed to compensate states for revenue losses after GST replaced earlier state taxes like VAT and octroi. Originally meant to expire in 2022, the cess was extended until March 2026 to help cover revenue shortfalls caused by the pandemic. Once it lapses, the Centre will have greater flexibility to rationalise GST rates without relying on this additional revenue stream. Small cars to see turnaround Small cars, defined as those under four metres with petrol engines up to 1,200cc and diesel engines up to 1,500cc, have steadily lost ground to SUVs, shrinking from nearly half the passenger vehicle market pre-pandemic to about one-third of the 4.3 million units sold in FY24. A lower tax rate could help revive demand in this category, which remains significant for manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors. Big cars may get costlier The government is also considering a 40 per cent special GST slab for larger vehicles, which currently attract 28 per cent GST plus a compensation cess of up to 22 per cent, taking the effective burden close to 50 per cent. Officials are weighing whether to impose supplementary levies to keep the final incidence within the existing 43-50 per cent band. Insurance relief on the cards Households may see additional relief through cheaper health and life insurance. Cutting GST to 5 per cent from 18 per cent or zero would help lower premiums and expand coverage in a country. GST Council to meet in September The matter has been referred to the Group of Ministers set up by the GST Council, which is expected to take place on September 9, according to a report by CNBC-TV18. If approved, the package would mark the most significant GST restructuring since 2017.
