We have a big pre-NHL draft trade that was discussed a bunch on Friday as we get ready for the 2025 edition of the draft: the New York Islanders sent defenseman Noah Dobson (a homegrown stud who was the 12th overall pick in 2018) to the Montreal Canadiens, who are getting another good D-man to add to their blue line that has Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson. This made sense for the Islanders if they weren't giving Dobson a long-term deal given that he was a pending restricted free agent. For the Canadiens? They're taking steps in the right direction for their rebuild. Advertisement As we do around here, let's hand out some grades to each team for this one: Canadiens and Islanders trade details: CANADIENS GET: D Noah Dobson (who got an 8-year contract with an AAV of $9.5 million) ISLANDERS GET: F Emil Heineman, the 16th and 17th overall picks in the 2025 NHL draft Islanders trade grade Dobson is seriously talented, even if his points dipped last season. But if the Islanders weren't re-signing him to a long-term deal, it made sense to deal him. And this haul? It's pretty darn good: TWO first-rounders and Heineman, who was a 2020 second-rounder.
