Major twist in Paul Pogba transfer battle as 'new club enters race' for former Man Utd midfielder as he returns from 18-month doping ban
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is reportedly being targeted by Saudi side Al-Ittihad who hope to beat Monaco to the Frenchman's signature.
The midfielder has held discussion with Monaco ahead of his return to football after his 18-month drugs suspension.
The free agent World Cup winner had appeared to nearing a move to the Ligue 1 side with a two-year contract proposal on the table.
Pogba saw his initial four-year drug ban cut to 18 months in October 2024 and has been free to recommence his career since March.
Discussions have been ongoing with image rights said to be amid a number of stumbling blocks in the way of a transfer to the Stade Louis II.
But while Monaco chiefs remain confident, a deal may be complicated by increased Saudi interest.
Al-Ittihad are hoping to sign the former Juventus midfielder, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.
A move to the Saudi Arabian champions would see Pogba linking up with former France international team-mates Karim Benzema and N'Golo Kante.
Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 last season and their offer of Champions League football could tempt Pogba, who is eyeing a return to the French national team ahead of the World Cup.
Earlier this week, Pogba reunited with some former United team-mates at the Club World Cup.
The 31-year-old jetted out to the States to catch up with some old friends in Miami as Boca Juniors took on Benfica.
Taking to Instagram, Pogba, who captioned the photo: 'What a pleasure to see my friends!' shared a snap of himself and four other former United players who all play for the Argentine side.
Sharing to his story and his 63million followers, Pogba stood in the middle of the group with his arms around two of the players.
To his left was goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who played 61 times for United - 21 times alongside Pogba - between 2015 and 2021. To his right was forward Edinson Cavani. The former Paris Saint-Germain man played 59 times for United - 36 with Pogba - joining in 2020 and leaving in 2022.
Next to Romero was Marcos Rojo. The centre back played for United for seven years, playing 48 times alongside the World Cup winner.
The final man in the picture was Ander Herrera, who played alongside Pogba 84 times - and was sent off in the game despite not being on the pitch.

New Viktor Gyokeres claim made as fresh Marcus Rashford setback comes to light
Manchester United are expected to be active in the transfer market after a poor season but they are still yet to build on the capture of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha Manchester United are working hard behind the scenes to try and get more signings over the line as they bid to shake up Ruben Amorim 's playing squad ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. The Red Devils endured their worst ever season in the Premier League last year and have already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a bid to refresh their frontline, with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo next in their sights. Plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected at United in the coming weeks and months with things finally starting to heat up in the transfer market. And with Amorim keen to get fresh faces in the door before the club head off on their pre-season tour of the United States next month, the pressure is on United's top brass to deliver. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news from in and around Old Trafford... New Rashford setback Manchester United are said to have 'offered' Real Madrid the chance to sign Marcus Rashford for £40million this summer - but the Spanish giants are unlikely to take them up on the offer. Rashford is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and wanted to seal a dream move to Barcelona. But with the Spanish champions advancing in their pursuit of Nico Williams, a move to the Nou Camp would appear to be off the cards. According to DefensaCentral, United have already offered Real the chance to step in and take Rashford to Spain amid their search for a striker. The report notes, though, that Real have already concluded that he is not the right profile for what they are seeking. Gyokeres latest Viktor Gyokeres' agent is reportedly willing to leak voice notes confirming that the club's former sporting director, Hugo Viana, would sell his client for less than his release clause. Arsenal and Manchester United have been heavily linked with the striker, whose preferred destination is believed to be north London. His future is unclear, though, amid claims Arsenal have reached an agreement on personal terms with Benjamin Sesko. Gyokeres seems destined to leave Sporting Lisbon regardless and according to Record, the player's agent, Hasan Çetinkaya, has 'evidence' that Viana agreed Gyokeres could be sold for €60m plus €10m in add-ons (£51m plus £8.5m) in a meeting back in September. Amorim wants signings Ruben Amorim is 'growing impatient' for new signings ahead of the club's pre-season tour of the Untied States with just Matheus Cunha through the door. The Red Devils are working to sign Bryan Mbeumo and also want a new striker with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyokeres on their wishlist. But Amorim wants more progress to be made on the transfer front before his team jet out Stateside to compete in the Premier League Summer Series. Bruno Fernandes given shock verdict despite Man Utd's worst-ever season
Bruno Fernandes was the only shining light in a dark season for Ruben Amorim's side, one which saw Manchester United finish the campaign down in 15th place Bruno Fernandes has been recognised by his fellow professionals – despite Manchester United's worst-ever Premier League campaign. United skipper Fernandes was the only shining light in a dark season for Ruben Amorim's side, one which saw them finish the campaign down in 15th place. The Red Devils lost 18 of their 38 Premier League games and failed to secure European football for only the second time in 35 years, after losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham. Despite such a shocking season, Fernandes has been honoured by his fellow professionals, with the 30-year-old making the six-man shortlist for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award. Fernandes is up against Liverpool duo Mo Salah and Alexis MacAllister, as well as Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer. United skipper Fernandes scored eight goals in 36 league appearances last season and 19 in all competitions. The award will be presented at a ceremony in Manchester on August 19. The last time a United player won the accolade was Wayne Rooney in 2010, with Manchester City and England forward Phil Foden the current holder. Fernandes considered leaving United this summer, after being approached by Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal over a move that would have trebled his current £300,000-a-week salary. But after discussing the potential move with his wife, Ana Pinho, Fernandes decided to reject the lucrative proposal and commit his future to United. "The president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask about the possibility of me moving there," said Fernandes. "I had to wait a while to think about the future. As I've always said, I would be willing to do it if United thought it was best to move on. I spoke with the coach, Ruben Amorim, who really tried to talk me out of it. " Manchester United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could, but they didn't need the money. From my side, it was a very ambitious proposal, the president was a fantastic person. I never talked about the money, it ended up coming up later, with my agent. "I had to make the decision as a family and understand what I wanted for my future. That was the question my wife asked, what my professional goals would be. At no point did she say yes or no, she always supported me and put my professional side first. "It was an easy move, even at a family level. I had Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo. My children are used to playing with theirs. But I simply want to stay at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, because I still feel capable of that. "I want to continue to be happy and do what I love most. I'm still very passionate about this sport. It's my way of seeing football and I'm happy with my decision."

Shock Serie A side 'enter race for Antony' as Brazilian makes his preference clear while Man United look to cut their losses on £86m flop
Italian side Como have tried to sign Manchester United outcast Antony as the winger desperately tries to end his nightmare spell at Old Trafford. The 25-year-old has endured a miserable stint at United and has been unable to fulfill the £86million price tag the Red Devils paid Ajax for his services in 2022. He has only scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 96 games for the club and even revealed he considered retirement while in Manchester. Antony is contracted until 2027 but is set to be axed after unconvincing performances under both Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag. The Brazilian was sent on loan to Betis in January and went on to become one of their stars of the season, scoring 14 times in 26 games in just five months. He earned rave reviews from players and fans alike as he earned a recall to the Brazil national team. The Brazilian is set to be axed from United's squad after failing to impress boss Ruben Amorim Antony's performances at Betis even led club legend Joaquin to joke that he would kidnap the forward to keep him at the club. However, the winger's loan spell concluded at the end of last season and he is currently returning to United. But the Red Devils look set to cut their losses and have opened the door for Antony's permanent exit. Italian side Como have attempted to sign the Brazilian in recent days but he is holding out on completing a move to Real Betis, according to Fabrizio Romano. United are aware of Antony's preference but there has been no agreement between the clubs yet. Como are managed by former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas and count former Spurs star Dele Alli on their books. They finished in 10th place in Serie A last season, having been promoted the previous season. Antony would not be the first player to swap Carrington for Como, with Raphael Varane making the move last year, before injury forced him into an early retirement Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas manages Como, who finished tenth in Serie A Antony is unlikely to stay at United beyond the summer after admitting he 'hit rock' bottom at United. 'I started to doubt, even in myself,' he said. 'But, my family always told me to stay calm, because the process is painful and people must accept it. Today, I understand it better after everything I went through. I am grateful for that experience.' But even if he were to remain, he would reportedly be banned from the club's pre-season tour of the US.
