Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur continue their upward trajectory in the International Convention & Conference Association (ICCA) 2024 Country & City Rankings report, strengthening their profile as premier business events destinations in the global marketplace. Malaysia moved up two places to 31st in the global country rankings and 9th in the Asia Pacific region, while Kuala Lumpur jumped six spots to 26th in the World City Rankings.
Advertisement In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) said that the rankings were supported by Malaysia hosting 129 international association meetings, with the Centre accommodating some of the city's 78 international association meetings that year. 'To promote the global profile of both Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur, the Centre maintains a strong partnership with the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) —- an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture —- regularly collaborating at international trade shows to attract business events to the country. 'In the first half of 2025, the Centre was part of MyCEB's delegation at the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME) 2025 in Melbourne and IMEX in Frankfurt,' it said. Key international trade shows on MyCEB's calendar that the Centre will also participate in later this year include The Meetings Show in London and the Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings (IBTM) in Barcelona. The Centre also said that as global business environments evolve, so too have delegate needs and expectations. It believes that flexibility is essential to meeting these demands, with personalisation and technology being key enablers in delivering effective solutions. Its general manager, John Burke, said the Centre's newly refurbished meeting spaces feature hybrid technology and upgraded audio-visual infrastructure, while a new shared workspace concept has also been launched to support delegates needing a convenient place to catch up on work and life between sessions. He said that with Kuala Lumpur International Airport, served by 79 airlines and visa-free access for 175 countries, Malaysia provides the great connectivity that global business events demand. 'On top of that, we have a mature supply chain aligned with global standards, wide English proficiency, and a favourable exchange rate. 'Combined with its rich cultural heritage and natural assets, Malaysia is a competitive choice,' said Burke. The Centre is located in the heart of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre precinct, beneath the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. Local Fishermen Should Benefit From BDIFIP Project
BAGAN DATUK, June 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for deep-sea resource harvesting licences under the Bagan Datuk International Fishery Industrial Park (BDIFIP) to be awarded to local communities, especially those from Perak. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the Fisheries Department could work with Menteri Besar Incorporated (MB Inc) to identify potential local operators who could be granted licences under the RM2 billion project. The Bagan Datuk MP added that he would work with financial institutions to ensure eligible fishermen receive assistance or loans, thereby ensuring that the benefits of the project are shared fairly between foreign investors and the local community. 'This is how we create balance, so that Malaysians, especially those in Perak, are not left with just low-paying jobs of RM1,700, watching others benefit from the project,' he said at the BDIFIP pre-launch ceremony here today. He also expressed hope that local workers at BDIFIP would not be paid minimum wages while foreign investors offer significantly higher salaries for similar roles in their home countries. 'Do not exploit the hard work of our local youth. Fair wages must be ensured, especially for those with skills and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM). 'I will personally monitor the progress of this industrial zone and ensure all timelines are fully met,' he said. At the event, Ahmad Zahid also witnessed the exchange of an agreement between MB Inc. Perak and Younchang Engineering & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Younchang Engineering and MingCheng Group Co Ltd, paving the way for broader international collaboration in the project's investment ecosystem. Earlier, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the BDIFIP project, involving investments of more than RM2 billion, will be developed in phases starting in 2027 across a 126.4-hectare site. Govt urged to assist local media industry in facing current challenges - Sabah editor

KUALA LUMPUR (June 14): The government has been urged to consider proactive measures to help the country's media industry, which is currently in a critical stage in facing major challenges. Utusan Borneo Sabah editor-in-chief Datuk Lichong Angkui said competition from social media and global digital platforms, declining advertising revenue and changing reading patterns of the people have caused media companies' income to shrink, while operating costs continue to rise. 'Proactive measures such as financial incentives, digital transformation grants and strategic collaborations could enable local media to remain relevant and competitive,' he said in his speech as a media representative at the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration here on Saturday. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics, the prestigious event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. 'This initiative proves the government's concern by taking into account the fact that, behind the sharpness of the journalist's pen, there is actually still room for compassion and empathy,' he said. Regarding the theme of HAWANA 2025, Lichong said it reflects the current reality of the world of journalism which is increasingly changing due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology which also raises questions of ethics, authenticity of information and social responsibility of journalists in assessing, filtering and presenting news. The HAWANA 2025 celebration is organised by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, with the aim of recognising the role and contribution of media practitioners in national development. May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players.-Bernama
