Duathlon: Sherborne's Zoe Tucker wins world championship gold

BBC News14-07-2025
An amateur running enthusiast has described the "incredible experience" of winning a gold medal at the duathlon world championships - just months after taking up the sport.Zoe Tucker, from Sherborne in Dorset, claimed victory in the sprint category at last month's competition in Spain. She first tried duathlon - a race combining a run, a cycle and another run - at an event in Thruxton, Hampshire, last October, alongside a couple of friends. The 46-year-old mother of two said she had "never thought it would be possible" to compete at the highest level.
Ms Tucker said she first entered the Thruxton Mass Attack Sprint Duathlon in last year as "a bit of motivation and fun," inspired by two friends who were also taking part.To her surprise, she finished first in her age group and fifth overall, earning her a spot to represent Great Britain at the world championships in Pontevedra, Spain.
A member of her local Communifit group, Ms Tucker had already been active in running 5km and 10km races and often cycled to attend parkruns. But competing on the world stage was something she had never imagined. She described the experience as "an absolute honour.""The scale of the event, the opening ceremony, a parade of nations, walking with GB kit and flag - it was an incredible experience."In the event, she became world champion in the sprint distance - a 5km run, a 19.7km bike ride followed by a 2.5km run to finish.Ms Tucker came first in her category and was also the fastest British woman overall in all age groups."Just coming round the track for the last lap, knowing I was probably going to get over that line first was incredible," she said.
Ms Tucker admitted that she had "absolutely never in my wildest dreams" expected to compete - let alone win - at the world championships.Preparing for the event meant balancing a demanding schedule, often juggling work and family life. She even brought her children along on training runs and to duathlon events."I'm hopefully inspiring them a bit, but it's been hard," she said. With the next world championships in Abu Dhabi next year, Ms Tucker said was aiming to develop a training plan and would like to get an indoor training bike to sustain competing at the highest level."There are so many activities and opportunities and events - I just think if an opportunity comes your way, just grab it and enjoy it along the way," she said.

More on Antony Real Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo hopes a 'dream' deal can still be done to sign Antony this summer, but says it would have to work for them financially. And they cannot do anything 'crazy' with United looking for around £30 million for the former Ajax winger. Fajardo told AS: "Both parties want him to be here this season. Every day that passes allows us to dream of him being here. "If Antony is here, it's because the numbers add up. The most important thing is the club's sustainability; we can't do anything crazy. 'It's okay to think big, but you also have to keep your feet on the ground. "If he doesn't sign with a club, there are still options, but the deal would take place within the parameters we have budgeted at the club."

Bill Turner dead at 78: Legendary horse trainer passes after 'freak accident' as his family pay tribute to him who 'was everyone's dad'

Horse racing is in mourning following the death of iconic trainer Bill Turner at the age of 78 on Thursday morning. Turner passed away after succumbing to his injuries sustained in a 'freak accident' on Monday, where he fractured his skull. The unfortunate incident involved a colt he had been reportedly riding at his Dorset yard. He had been on a ventilator since being rushed to hospital on Monday, but died less than 72 hours later. His daughter Kathy revealed the news in an emotional interview on Sky Sports Racing: 'Everyone in racing will miss him. I can't get round this injury doing this to him. 'I've pulled him out from under horses, he's been up on roofs just last Sunday - that was him, you'd never change him. 'Dad passed away about an hour-and-a-half ago - we had the phone call while on the way to Chepstow races. He slipped away this morning. 'The messages and the support from everyone have just been absolutely outstanding. 'I've tried to reply to as many people as I could but I'm so sorry if I haven't replied. 'The love that man had - he wasn't just my dad, he was everyone's dad. The people he helped all through his years. He was everyone's dad. 'He would have preferred to be going flat out up the gallops with something like this. 'But it was just a freak accident. He was holding onto a cob, not on top of a racehorse going flat out, which he thoroughly enjoyed.' Turner was born in 1947 in Shropshire and ran his stable at Sigwells with his wife Tracy and daughter Kathy. He looked after a dozen horses and held a combined licence with the British Horseracing Authority. One of his more iconic ventures was when he tried to teach a zebra called Zebedee to run like a thoroughbred. In 2009, he bought Zebedee for £4,5000 from a wildlife park in the Netherlands after being told they were impossible to ride. Within two-and-a-half weeks, he had stunned locals by riding Zebedee down to the Kings Arms pub in Sherborne. 'The first two or three days I had him I thought to myself "you silly old devil, I've bitten off more than you can chew here." We were having real problems,' he said. 'The landlord down the pub and customers reckoned it would take six months to train but after two-and-a-half weeks we did it. 'When people saw me me going down the road they were stopping, jumping out saying "I don't believe what I'm seeing." 'A few of the pub customers came out and saw him and quickly went back in saying "I'll have another pint of that, it's better than I thought it was."'
