The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, has arrested a 27-year-old Limpopo man for fraud after he allegedly acquired a top-of-the-range Ford Raptor fraudulently.
The 27-year-old man who cannot be identified until he appears in court was nabbed by the Hawks' serious commercial crime investigation unit and the Sekhukhune tracing team at Groblersdal in Limpopo.
'It is alleged that during April 2023, the accused applied for motor vehicle finance at WesBank to purchase a Ford Ranger Raptor valued at over R1.3 million.
'The accused allegedly attached the bank statement and the employer's payslip as requested,' said Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, spokesperson for the Hawks in Limpopo.
'The application was processed and approved.'
The dealership then contacted the 27-year-old man and notified him that his application had been successful.

'He went to the dealership in Polokwane to collect the car, accompanied by two men who are also suspects,' said Mmuroa.
As days went by, the 27-year-old man failed to make the monthly installments for the vehicle. The bank tried to contact him without success.
'WesBank conducted a forensic audit and noticed that the accused used fraudulent documents during his application. The matter was reported to the Hawks' serious commercial crime investigation in Polokwane for assistance,' said Mmuroa.
Investigations were conducted by the Hawks, which led to the arrest of the first accused person in the matter in January 2024.
'Further investigations revealed that the arrested suspect, aged 27, assisted the accused to defraud and collect the vehicle from the dealership,' said Mmuroa.
'The suspect is expected to appear before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, sitting in Polokwane, on 28 July 2025.'
Meanwhile, provincial head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General Gopz Govender has welcomed the arrest of the suspect.
A Limpopo woman, Thandaza Lubisi was arrested for allegedly using fake documents to get her Hyundai Atos financed by a car dealership in Tzaneen.

In 2023, IOL reported that a Limpopo woman, aged 22, was sentenced to pay R10 000 or spend two years in jail after she used fraudulent documents to buy a Hyundai Atos.
At the time, Hawks in Limpopo, Lieutenant-Colonel Matimba Maluleke said the Hyundai Atos valued at over R340 000 was financed by Wesbank in 2022.
'Miranda Thandaza Lubisi was sentenced for fraud by the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 12 May, 2023,' Matimba said.
'On 16 September, 2022, the accused visited a vehicle dealership in Tzaneen and showed interest in a Hyundai Atos valued at R346 122. The accused was assisted by the salesperson at the dealership to apply for vehicle finance that was later approved by Wesbank.'
Maluleke said the vehicle was delivered to Lubisi.
'After a few months, the bank was audited and it was discovered that the accused used fraudulent documents to apply for vehicle finance. The case of fraud was opened at Tzaneen police station and transferred to the Hawks' serious commercial crime investigation unit for further handling,' he said.
A thorough investigation was conducted, and consequently, the accused was arrested and charged with fraud.
After a few court appearances, she was granted bail until she was convicted and sentenced to pay R10 000 or two years' imprisonment,' Maluleke said.
'She was further sentenced to five years imprisonment which is suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit similar offences during the suspension period.'

R446,000 cash and Toyota Fortuner forfeited to the State as driver fails to explain money's origins
Police in Limpopo searched a Toyota Fortuner driven by a Zimbabwean national on the N1 freeway and found R446,000 in a bag, which was then seized by the law enforcement authorities. Image: SAPS The High Court in Limpopo has granted a forfeiture order for a cash amount of R446,000 and a Toyota Fortuner sport utility vehicle, which were seized by police. The Hawks' asset forfeiture investigation unit and the National Prosecuting Authority's asset forfeiture unit (AFU) worked tirelessly to ensure the forfeiture of the money and the vehicle. 'This emanates from the arrest conducted by members of the South African Police Service attached to Musina in 2024. On 4 July 2024, police conducted a stop and search operation along the N1 road in Musina,' said Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks in Limpopo. During the operation, the police officers stopped the Toyota Fortuner which was driven by a foreign national. 'During a search, police found a plastic bag that contained South African bank notes underneath blankets inside the boot. Police interviewed the driver, and he failed to give a clear explanation for carrying the large amount of money inside the vehicle,' said Mmuroa. The driver was immediately arrested and the money was seized. The Hawks' asset forfeiture investigation unit was consulted for asset investigation. 'After completion of the investigations, the Hawks referred the matter to the National Prosecuting Authority's asset forfeiture unit for further handling. Following court processes, the High Court in Limpopo granted a preservation order for the Toyota Fortuner and the money in February, before the forfeiture order was granted last week. 'The cash was deposited into the criminal asset recovery account on 29 July. The forfeited Toyota Fortuner is about to be sold on auction,' said Mmuroa. Earlier this year, IOL reported that a 49-year-old man was arrested on charges of money laundering after being found in possession of about R1.2 million in cash. At the time, provincial police spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, said the arrested man had allegedly tried to bribe police officers after the money was found. 'This achievement is the result of the dedication by members deployed for Operation Vala Umgodi, and the man was nabbed on 16 March 2025 at Tonga near Komatipoort,' said Ndubane. She said police officers received a tip-off about a man who was allegedly in possession of an unlicenced firearm. 'They then responded swiftly and followed the information, and upon arrival at Tonga View, they found the owner of the house and conducted a search and it was during that time when they discovered the large sum of money hidden under the bed as well as inside the wardrobe,' said Ndubane. 'The astute members continued searching in other rooms where they further found a bag full of money. It was during the process when the man tried his luck to bribe the police officials with R50,000, but his attempts failed dismally.' Ndubane said the money amounted to R1.2 million in banknotes and coins, while there was also Mozambican currency. Eastern Cape school girl assaulted by group of leaners in viral video
Viral video shows a female learner being assaulted by a group of peers from David Mama Senior Secondary School. Image: Screenshot via X A disturbing video showing a female learner from David Mama Senior Secondary School being violently attacked by fellow learners has triggered widespread condemnation and prompted the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDOE) to launch an urgent investigation. The video, which began circulating on social media platforms on August 1, shows the girl being slapped, punched, and pushed by a group of learners before and after getting off a school transport vehicle. Other learners are seen laughing and recording the incident without intervening. The Eastern Cape Department of Education confirmed on Saturday that it will send a team of officials to the school in the Buffalo City Education District on Monday, August 4, to investigate the incident. What's the name of the school? Guys help please 😭😭 — DENIA MOTORS (@DENIAMOTORS) August 1, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ 'The video is unacceptable and unimaginable,' the department said. 'This unbecoming behavior is projecting a deep societal problem that needs every parent to take responsibility in raising his/her kids.' The department emphasised its commitment to providing support to the victim and ensuring accountability. 'The department will make sure that the affected learner receives the needed psychosocial support,' it said, adding that it 'does not tolerate any form of bullying in all its schools.' However, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Eastern Cape have condemned the department's response as insufficient and have demanded the immediate expulsion of the learner identified in the footage as the main aggressor. 'As the EFF, we reject this feeble, bureaucratic response in the strongest possible terms,' the party said. 'There is no investigation necessary when a video clearly captures a young girl being physically assaulted in full view of other learners.' The EFF further warned that allowing an investigation to proceed might offer an opportunity for the perpetrator to justify or minimise the attack. 'This approach is not justice; it is complicity,' it stated. The party also criticised the presence of an adult, believed to be the school bus driver, who appeared to witness the attack without intervening. 'That silence, that inaction, is not neutral; it is a betrayal,' said the EFF. 'It raises serious questions about the character and responsibility of the adult involved.' The EFF announced that its representatives will visit the school on August 4 to demand accountability. 'The learner responsible must be expelled immediately. The victim deserves justice. The school must be held accountable. And the Department must act with the urgency and seriousness this matter demands,' it said. Please if you are near the place kindly check the child and the mother hle 😭😭 — DENIA MOTORS (@DENIAMOTORS) August 2, 2025 The incident has reignited debate about the prevalence of bullying and gender-based violence in South African schools and the broader society. 'Our society is already overwhelmed by violent men who assault, abuse, and kill young women and girls and almost always get away with it,' said the EFF. Both the department and political leaders are under pressure to act decisively in the coming days. Meanwhile, public anger continues to grow online as the video circulates widely. The ECDOE has urged all learners to refrain from violence, warning that such behavior 'directly destroys their future.' IOL News
