Volcano Erupts in Southwest Iceland
A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland on Wednesday, marking the latest in a series of eruptions that have affected the region since 2021, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
Iceland, a North Atlantic island nation known for its dramatic landscapes shaped by glaciers and volcanoes, has now experienced 12 volcanic eruptions in just four years.
These eruptions are typically characterized by lava emerging from long fissures in the Earth's crust rather than explosive activity from a central crater.
The latest eruption
occurred
in the Reykjanes Peninsula, a geologically active area near the capital Reykjavik.
While visually striking, these events have so far posed no direct threat to the capital and have not produced significant ash clouds in the stratosphere or caused disruption to air traffic.
However, the nearby fishing town of Grindavík remains largely abandoned. Once home to nearly 4,000 residents, the town was evacuated in 2023 due to persistent threats from lava flows and earthquake swarms linked to the volcanic unrest.

Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Launches Photography Competition to Highlight Underwater Cultural Heritage
Ali abo deshish To shed light on Egypt's underwater cultural heritage, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is launching a photography competition for amateur photographers starting Friday, August 1, 2025. The competition aims to select the best photograph showcasing one of the underwater archaeological artifacts recovered from the Mediterranean Sea, currently displayed at either the Graeco-Roman Museum or the Alexandria National Museum. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, H.E. Sherif Fathy, emphasized that this initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to raising awareness about the importance of submerged cultural heritage and highlighting Egypt's unique archaeological treasures discovered beneath the Mediterranean. He added that the competition is aligned with Egypt's obligations under the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, explained that the competition is one of several upcoming events organized by the Ministry to spotlight this exceptional heritage. Details of the competition will be announced via the official social media pages of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The competition is open to photographers from Egypt and abroad, who are invited to photograph the submerged artifacts on display at the Graeco-Roman Museum and Alexandria National Museum during official opening hours between August 1 and August 10, 2025. Participants must submit their photographs along with a brief CV to the following email address: [email protected] , no later than Thursday, August 14, 2025. A specialized jury composed of university professors and experts in photography and archaeology will evaluate the submissions, under the supervision of the competition's technical secretariat. Dr. Ahmed Rahima, Assistant Minister for Human Resource Development and Head of the Central Training Unit, noted that judging will focus on artistic quality, visual creativity, and the ability to highlight the fine details and aesthetic appeal of the artifacts. Egypt Suez Canal extends discount for large container ships till end-December - Urban & Transport
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has extended a 15 percent discount on transit fees for heavy tonnage container ships until 31 December 2025. The extended discount applies to vessels with a net tonnage of 130,000 or more, whether loaded or empty, according to a SCA circular issued on Tuesday. The incentive, initially launched on 15 May for 90 days, came as a direct response to requests from shipping companies that faced increased costs due to longer routes taken during recent Red Sea tensions. It mainly aimed to encourage major shipping lines to resume using the canal. The decision also coincides with a period of relative stability in the Red Sea region. Hopes for restored stability in this vital global shipping corridor were boosted by a ceasefire between the US and Yemen's Houthi rebels, brokered by Oman on 6 May after weeks of US airstrikes. Since the start of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have targeted Israeli-linked ships, disrupting traffic and forcing major carriers to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope — a more protracted and expensive journey. The disruption slashed the Suez Canal revenues by over 60 percent in 2024, costing Egypt an estimated $7 billion. Signs of recovery began in February, with SCA Chairman Osama Rabie announcing the return of several vessels to the canal route over the past few weeks. The Suez Canal links the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and attracts 12 percent of global trade. The canal is among Egypt's key foreign currency sources, along with tourism and remittances.
