Ringgit closes lower despite weaker US Dollar Index

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit retreated against the greenback today despite the weaker US Dollar Index (DXY) and lower US Treasury yields after the recent downgrade of the US's credit rating by Moody's Ratings.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the ringgit had climbed to RM4.2873 in the afternoon session from the previous day's close of RM4.2908 before ending lower.
'The gains were likely capped as some traders took profit,' he told Bernama.
He noted that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decided to cut the cash rate by 25 basis points to 3.85% today after it was last reduced in February due to greater uncertainties in the global economic outlook following the tariff shocks of the US.
'Consequently, the Aussie dollar was weaker against the US dollar by 0.51% to US$0.6424 per Australian dollar.
'The RBA decision reflects uncertainties surrounding the tariff shocks, which will continue to affect monetary policy decisions across the globe,' he said.
Afzanizam said today's data on Malaysia's exports surprised on the upside when it grew by 16.4%, surpassing the consensus estimates of 7.5%.
'While it remains to be seen whether such a trajectory can be maintained in the months to come, the Malaysian economy in the second quarter should be able to grow more than 4%,' he said.
At 6pm, the local note eased to 4.2950/4.3010 versus the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2870/4.2945.
At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies.
It was slightly higher vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8340/4.8408 from yesterday's 4.8344/4.8429, but depreciated versus the Japanese yen to 2.9727/2.9773 from 2.9596/2.9650, and dipped against the British pound to 5.7428/5.7509 from 5.7420/5.7521 previously.
The local note traded lower against its Asean peers.
It went down vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.72/7.73 from 7.69/7.71 yesterday, decreased against the Singapore dollar to 3.3153/3.3202 from 3.3135/3.3195, and declined against the Thai baht to 12.9856/13.0116 from 12.9630/12.9924.
It slid against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.6/262.1 from 260.8/261.4.

Ringgit rebounds as US dollar weakens despite progress in trade talks

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit strengthened against the US dollar as the greenback softened, with the US Dollar Index (DXY) slipping 0.1% to 99.0 points, despite renewed optimism over a potential breakthrough in the US-China trade talks. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said that the local currency continues to trade range-bound, moving between 4.2322 and 4.2418. 'The renewed optimism over the trade talks failed to sustain due to the lack of information, giving rise to uncertainties yet again,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Afzanizam noted that Malaysia's industrial production index (IPI) grew moderately at 2.7% in April, while growth in the export-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector continues to accelerate to 6.4%, especially the electrical and electronics sector. Front-loading activities among the trading partners, especially from the US, could explain such high growth in the manufacturing activities. 'All in all, traders and investors remain cautious on the tariff front and how it may impact the economy,' he added. At 6pm, the local currency stood at 4.2345/4.2370 against the dollar, slightly firmer than yesterday's close of 4.2360/4.2420. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9187/2.9207 from yesterday's 2.9270/2.9314 but weakened versus the British pound to 5.7166/5.7200 from 5.7152/5.7233 yesterday and fell vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8426/4.8454 from 4.8354/4.8422 previously. At the same time, the local currency traded mixed against its Asean peers, rising versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2925/3.2947 from 3.2932/3.2981 at yesterday's close and increased vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.57/7.59 from 7.58/7.60 yesterday. However, the ringgit declined against the Thai baht to 12.9729/12.9870 from 12.9712/12.9955 yesterday and eased against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.4/260.6 from 260.2/260.7 previously.

Bursa ends higher on US-China trade framework optimism

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia ended higher today, with investors adopting a cautiously optimistic stance following the announcement of a US-China trade framework agreement, which includes provisions on technology trade. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan said the development in the US-China trade negotiations marks a constructive step toward de-escalation, although it falls short of a material breakthrough. Domestically, the market found additional support from encouraging macroeconomic data, with figures released today by the statistics department showing that the sales value of the manufacturing sector rose by 4.8% year-on-year in April 2025, reaching RM160.6 billion. 'Notably, the domestic-oriented industries expanded further by 3.6% in April, up from a 1.8% increase in March. 'Although these indicators are typically considered lagging, they are nonetheless critical in signalling that Malaysia's economic and export sectors remain fundamentally solid despite global trade uncertainties,' he said. Sedek further elaborated that investor sentiment was buoyed by an improvement in trading activity as market volume rebounded to a more normalised level, surpassing the three billion shares mark after languishing around 2.7 billion shares for the past five consecutive trading days. 'Financials, utilities, and data centre-related counters led the gainers, reflecting renewed confidence in sectors anchored by domestic demand and long-term structural trends,' he added. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 6.89 points, or 0.45%, to 1,523.84 from Tuesday's close of 1,516.95. The benchmark index opened 3.91 points higher at 1,520.86 this morning, which was its day's low, and subsequently moved to a high of 1,530.85 in the early session. On the broader market, gainers thumped decliners 545 to 375, while 528 counters were unchanged, 921 untraded and 11 suspended. Turnover soared to 3.27 billion units worth RM2.59 billion compared with yesterday's 2.72 billion units worth RM2.09 billion. Among the heavyweights, Maybank advanced 4 sen to RM9.70, Tenaga Nasional was flat at RM14.24, Public Bank and CIMB both rose 5 sen to RM4.31 and RM6.90, respectively, while IHH slipped 3 sen to RM6.86. The top gainers in the broader market were led by consumer products and services counters, with F&N adding 64 sen to RM28.44, followed by Nestle, which gained 56 sen to RM75.56, and Allianz climbed 26 sen to RM19.38. Among the most active stocks, MyEG was 2 sen higher at 97 sen, TWL was flat at 2.5 sen, YTL Corporation improved 16 sen to RM2.18, Gamuda was 6 sen better at RM4.76, and Tanco perked up 1 sen to 97.5 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index jumped 43.61 points to 11,437.73, the FBMT 100 Index increased 43.99 points to 11,203.54, the FBM Emas Shariah Index advanced 23.45 points to 11,392.67, the FBM 70 Index climbed 38.56 points to 16,525.22, while the FBM ACE Index added 33.27 points to 4,544.05. Sterling ticks lower ahead of closely watched UK spending review

The pound was last down 0.2% versus the US dollar at US$1.3472. (Reuters pic) LONDON : Sterling fell against a firmer dollar today, as markets geared up for a multi-year UK spending review due later in the day from British finance minister Rachel Reeves, who is set to reveal how public spending will be divided up. The pound was last down 0.2% versus the dollar at US$1.3472 and was weaker against the euro, which rose 0.1% to 84.68 pence. The dollar edged up against a range of currencies after U.S. and Chinese trade representatives wrapped up two days of talks in London where they agreed on a framework to bring their tariff truce back on track. Reeves will set out the allocation of around £2 trillion (US$2.7 trillion) of public spending, with plans for allocations for research and development, public transport, a new nuclear power station, nuclear submarines and prisons already announced. 'When it comes to day-to-day spending, there's still probably not enough cash to go around, so more money would need to be found in the autumn budget,' said Francesco Pesole, FX strategist at ING. 'The take-away for markets today will simply be confirmation that there is very little fiscal headroom. 'The only risk for sterling would come from changes in the gilt market, which can be more sensitive to anything related to UK budgets,' Pesole said. Sterling has soared almost 8% in 2025 and is not far off a three-year high of US$1.3593 hit on May 26 with trade jitters and wariness over the global economic outlook underpinning dollar weakness. Meanwhile, the fact that Britain is the only country to strike a trade agreement with the US has lent support to the pound. However, the outlook for the British economy remains murky. Yesterday's jobs data showed pay growth slowed sharply and unemployment rose to its highest level in nearly four years in the three months to April. The Bank of England (BoE) is still expected to keep rates on hold at next week's meeting, with markets placing a 90% likelihood on that outcome. Commerzbank analysts said in a note the jobs data showed the UK's real economy is not as stable as suggested by stronger than expected first-quarter growth figures published last month. Also complicating the picture was a hotter-than-expected inflation print for April, which at the time dampened the prospect of a delay to cuts from the BoE.
