Explained: Why Russia Gaining Foothold Into Key Ukraine Region Matters

NDTV08-07-2025
After months of fighting metre-by-metre towards the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, Russia announced this week that it had finally gained a foothold in the industrial territory.
Here's why the advance matters now, after more than three years of intensive fighting:
What Happened?
Russia's defence ministry said on Monday that its forces had captured the village of Dachne just inside Dnipropetrovsk. The estimated population of the village was just several dozen people before the war.
But this is first time that Russia claims to have entered and held any significant amount of territory in the region, building pressure on Kyiv's forces across a sprawling and precarious front line.
Senior political and military officials in Kyiv have not responded to Russia's claim. But Ukrainian units fighting near Dachne have said the village remains under their control.
What Moscow And Kyiv Are Saying
Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's hawkish ex-president, said last month when Russian troops first crossed the border that this was the result of Kyiv and its allies not accepting occupied territory as Russian earlier.
"Those who do not want to accept the realities of the war in negotiations, will get new realities on the ground," he said.
Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky conceded this week that this section of the front was one where Russia has "significant superiority in forces and resources."
"The advance here was only a matter of time," a popular military Ukrainian blogger, Sergiy Sternenko wrote on Telegram.
What Does This Mean For Ukraine?
Dnipropetrovsk is part of Ukraine's mining heartland, particularly for coal that powers the country's electricity grid. Further Russian advances could harm the economy and energy supplies.
Authorities have already been ordering civilians with children to flee the front line that is creeping closer.
Deeper Russian advances could mean more attacks on one of Ukraine's largest cities, Dnipro -- though Russian troops are around 200 kilometres (120 miles) away.
Analysts do not believe Russia has enough military capacity to completely collapse Ukrainian lines anywhere across the frontline, including Dnipropetrovsk.
"They do not have -- and will not have -- the resources to move forward quickly," said Oleksiy Kopytko, a military analyst and former advisor to the defence ministry.
Impact On Peace Talks?
In 2014, Moscow took control of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, and in 2022 -- months after launching its invasion -- claimed control over four eastern and southern Ukrainian regions.
It now wants Ukraine to recognise its recognition of these territories as part of Russia for a ceasefire, even though it doesn't fully control them.
Moscow's advance into Dnipropetrovsk could give the Kremlin a pretext to also claim that region as part of Russia, escalating its maximalist negotiating position.
Several rounds of direct talks however between Kyiv and Moscow this year appear to have already stalled.

Modi, Shah call separately on President Murmu

. . . 1 2 NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu amid a logjam in Parliament over the opposition's demand for a discussion on the special intensive revision exercise in Bihar ahead of assembly elections in the state. Home minister Amit Shah also called on the President separately later. The Rashtrapati Bhavan posted photos of both interactions on X. Except for discussions on Operation Sindoor, Parliament has seen little business since the monsoon session began on July 21. The meetings also came days after US President Trump announced 25% tariffs on Indian exports and an unspecified penalty over Russian purchases.

Top Trump aide accuses India of financing Russia's war in Ukraine

A top aide to U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday (August 3, 2025) accused India of effectively financing Russia's war in Ukraine by purchasing oil from Moscow, after the U.S. leader escalated pressure on New Delhi to stop buying Russian oil. "What he (Trump) said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia," said Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff at the White House and one of Mr. Trump's most influential aides. Mr. Miller's criticism was one of the strongest yet by the Trump administration about one of the United States' major partners in the Indo-Pacific. "People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That's an astonishing fact," MR. Miller said on Fox News. The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Indian government sources told Reuters on Saturday that New Delhi will keep purchasing oil from Moscow despite U.S. threats. A 25% tariff on Indian products went into effect on Friday as a result of its purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia. Trump has also threatened 100% tariffs on U.S. imports from countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. Mr. Miller tempered his criticism by noting Mr. Trump's relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he described as "tremendous.

Trump repeats claim he settled wars, including between India and Pakistan, with trade

US President Donald Trump on Sunday yet again took credit for stopping conflicts around the world, including the recent one between India and Pakistan. US President Donald Trump walks off Air Force One at the Lehigh Valley International Airport on August 01, 2025 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.(AFP) Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a 'full and immediate' ceasefire after a 'long night' of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim on several occasions. Trump's latest claim comes days after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for ending several conflicts around the world including the one between India and Pakistan. On Sunday, in a post on Truth Social, Trump slammed radio host and author Charlamagne Tha God, and said he (God) knows nothing about him or what he has done, 'like just ending 5 Wars, including a 31 year bloodbath between Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, where Seven Million people have died, and there was no end in sight.' 'He didn't know that, or India and Pakistan or, wiping out Iran's nuclear capabilities, or closing the horrendous open Border, or creating the greatest economy,' Trump said. Just a day earlier, Trump said in an interview on Newsmax that he has settled a lot of wars. 'You take a look at what's happened just over the last little while. We've settled a lot of, a lot of very beautiful wars have been settled… One of the wars India, Pakistan, nuclear,' Trump said adding that he settled conflict between Thailand and Cambodia as well as Congo and Rwanda. 'I settled that up. And I settled it up with trade. I settled a lot of them with trade. I said 'listen, you guys are going to fight. You can fight all you want. I mean, just fight your hearts out. But we're not doing a trade deal'. 'All of a sudden they end up not doing a war. I settled a lot of wars. I think I settled averaging about a war a month. But, you know, we're saving millions of lives,' he said. Trump on Wednesday announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty for buying Russian crude oil and military equipment. The tariff for Pakistan was 19 per cent, lower than the 29 per cent announced by Trump in April. In fact, Trump on Wednesday also announced sealing a trade deal with Pakistan and said that Washington will work with Islamabad to develop what he described as the South Asian nation's 'massive oil reserves.' At a White House press briefing on Thursday, Leavitt said that Trump has 'now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo and Egypt and Ethiopia.' She said that the president has brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office. 'It's well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,' she said. Since May 10, Trump has repeated his claim nearly 30 times that he 'helped settle' the tensions between India and Pakistan and that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America will do a 'lot of trade' with them if they stopped the conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Parliament this week that no leader of any country asked India to stop Operation Sindoor launched by India in retaliation after the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that killed 26 people. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday categorically said there was no third-party intervention in bringing about a ceasefire with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, asserting that the halting of the military action was also not linked to trade as claimed by Trump. Intervening in the special discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said Prime Minister Modi and Trump did not have any phone calls between April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack took place, and June 16.
