Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton won't return to outfield until he's ready, and the plan is to go slow

New York Times5 days ago
NEW YORK — Whether the oft-injured Giancarlo Stanton, who hasn't played the outfield in nearly two years, appears on defense for the New York Yankees anytime soon will depend largely on one thing:
Does he think he can do it?
'I really want him to communicate with me how he feels because I know at this point in his career, for as long as he's played the game, he's going to know how he feels on a day-to-day basis,' outfield coordinator and third base coach Luis Rojas said before Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are hoping to prepare Stanton for the possibility that he plays some outfield to keep his bat in the lineup when Aaron Judge (right flexor tendon strain) returns from the injured list initially as a designated hitter while he ramps up his throwing program.
Manager Aaron Boone said the Yankees still believe it's possible that Judge will be able to come off the IL as soon as the 10-day period ends. On Tuesday, Judge did light work in the batting cage for the first time since going on the IL, Boone said.
On Monday, Stanton began his first steps toward possibly returning to the outfield, taking ground balls in right field from Rojas and throwing them lightly to second base. Stanton hasn't been anything other than a DH since Sept. 14, 2023.

On Saturday, Stanton said that he'll 'be ready when needed.'
When will that be? It's unclear. Stanton didn't work out in the outfield Tuesday. Rojas said the plan was to go slow with Stanton, who missed the first 70 games of the year with tennis elbow in both of his elbows. Stanton also runs the bases slowly and gingerly, as if he's trying not to hurt himself.
'You have to,' Rojas said. 'He's already been through an injury this year. He's a guy who knows his body very well.'
Stanton hasn't rated as an above-average right fielder in terms of Outs Above Average since 2018, his first year with the Yankees, according to Baseball Savant.
'I think it's something that he's not going to be out there embarrassing himself or costing the team anything,' Rojas said. 'I know he's going to be in good shape to make plays. But progressively, we don't have a timeline for when he's going to say, 'This is it. I'm ready.' I just really trust his feel right now.'

Rojas added that while catcher/first baseman/DH Ben Rice isn't being discussed as a possible option in right field, the idea came up briefly in April. Rice, 26, has never played outfield in a professional game, but he would occasionally take fly balls when he was with Double-A Somerset, which at the time had a glut of catchers.
'Jokingly we talked about it at the beginning of the season,' Rojas said, 'knowing that Stanton was going to come back (off the injured list). Everyone was curious about what was going to happen because Giancarlo was on his way, and this kid (Rice) rakes. You already have two catchers. So, what's going to happen?'
Rice never ended up working out in the outfield, but Rojas didn't dismiss the idea at some point.
'Can he do it?' Rojas said. 'We're talking about a big-league player who isn't necessarily a slow guy. He's got some ability. There's some speed in him. Not bursting speed, but speed that can hold up in right field, for example. He could, but let's see what the decision is for our manager or the higher ups, or how the team is going to shape up in a couple days. But right now, the plan is Giancarlo, and like I said, he's just taking it day to day right now.'

Even after a wild trade deadline, Yankees still lack sense of urgency

MIAMI — By all accounts, the New York Yankees were one of the big winners at the MLB trade deadline. They added a third baseman, two utility infielders, a platoon partner for Jasson Domínguez and revamped the bullpen. The excitement in the Bronx this past Thursday was the highest it has been in over two months. Advertisement It all evaporated in Miami. The Yankees were swept for the first time by the surging Miami Marlins, who have just one player making more than $3.5 million on their roster, and he didn't even play (Sandy Alcantara). By comparison, the Yankees have 14 such players on their active roster. Payroll discrepancy isn't everything to measure which teams should and shouldn't be good, but they do provide general expectations for the franchises. The Yankees are all-in and have World Series aspirations. The Marlins hope to somehow sneak into the third Wild Card spot in the National League. But if you watched the three games in Miami, it appeared as if the teams' expectations were reversed. The Yankees were sloppy, again; they made Little League mistakes; and their bats were quieted in the final two games. After getting swept, the Yankees are 4 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East and 1 1/2 games back of the Boston Red Sox for second place. They are just a 1/2 game ahead of the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card spot and 1 1/2 games in front of the Texas Rangers, who they start a three-game series with on Monday, from missing the playoffs entirely. 'I wouldn't say there's concern, but I would say I think a little sense of urgency would be good for us,' Yankees catcher/first baseman Ben Rice said. That would be the opposite of how the Yankees usually approach the game. They tend to operate with a laissez-faire attitude that starts with manager Aaron Boone. Since team captain Aaron Judge said they would hit a hot streak, they're 4-6. Since the Yankees lost two of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 1, they are 24-30, a worse record than the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Athletics during this span. 'I think we have the makings of a very good club, but obviously we haven't shown it consistently enough,' manager Aaron Boone said. Advertisement It is still possible the Yankees can turn their season around and make the playoffs with ease. They have 16 games remaining against the White Sox, Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins. They have the best offense in baseball, with a 117 OPS+. They have an MVP contender in Judge. They have Cody Bellinger, who will be a down-ballot MVP contender. Their bullpen now features numerous high-leverage arms. They should be better than this. 'Since I've been here, I feel like we have a chance to be as good as any team as we've had,' Boone said. 'I really feel like that. That starts with me and helping them get it out, but we got to do it. And, again, I am very confident that we will. But, it has been a long enough stretch of ups and downs, lose a few, win a few. We got to do better than that.' Talk is cheap for the Yankees. The Dodgers spent their offseason poking fun at the Yankees and how sloppy they were defensively, only for New York to regress. They dropped from 10th in outs above average last season to 21st in 2025. They came into spring training taking those comments from the Dodgers personally, but that fire to prove they were better than what they showed in the World Series has gone missing. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman called the post-deadline a sprint until the end of the season. There are 50 games remaining. The Yankees are slipping in the standings. And with them still struggling to find urgency within themselves, it's fair to wonder if it'll be impossible to find. 'I think everyone in this room, we have really high expectations, and we're not meeting them right now,' Bellinger said. (Photo of Luis Gil: Sam Navarro / Imagn Images)

The Marlins (55-55) won all three games against the Yankees (60-52) to reach .500 for the first time since April 15. They became the first MLB team to go from 16 or more games under .500 to a .500 record since the Rays in 2014. Stowers made it 6-1 when he connected on an 0-2 fastball from Brent Headrick, who entered in the fourth with two on after starter Luis Gil (0-1) was lifted 3 1/3 innings into his season debut. Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, struck out three and surrendered five runs and five hits while issuing four walks in his return from a high-grade lat strain. He threw 77 pitches. Marlins starter Edward Cabrera (5-5) pitched six innings of two-hit ball with seven strikeouts and one walk. His only blemish came against the first batter he faced. Trent Grisham drove Cabrera's 98.1 mph four-seam fastball to right-center. Marlins sweep Yankees for first time in franchise history in front of record crowd, move to .500

The Miami Marlins' red-hot summer just keeps coming. The Marlins powered to a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday, completing a sweep over the Yankees for the first time in franchise history. Miami also hit the milestone in front of a record crowd, with a series attendance of 101,545 setting a franchise record. With the win, Miami also moves to 55-55, hitting .500 for the first time since April. The team dropped to 24-40 in early June, but have won 31 games in the two months since to pull to even. Sunday's win came easily to the Marlins, who took a 3-1 lead after two innings. Then, in the fourth inning, Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer to bring Miami's lead to 6-1. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run bomb in the seventh to help the Yankees cut into the deficit, but an RBI triple from Jakob Marsee secured the 7-3 win. The series was a poor showing from the Yankees, who dropped the first game 13-12 after a trio of relievers blew a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh. All three pitchers — Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval — were recent acquisitions ahead of the MLB trade deadline. The bad luck continued on Saturday, as the Yankees were caught sleeping while Miami powered to a 2-0 win. Then, on Sunday, the Marlins secured the historic sweep. Miami will keep trying to ride that momentum through the next series, a homestand against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. The Yankees, meanwhile, will lick their wounds on the way to playing the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
