Perlis leaders promise immediate action over 'Little Napoleons' mentioned by ruler

KANGAR: The Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamallullail's reprimand over bureaucracy and the entrenched "Little Napoleon" culture within the Kangar Municipal Council must not be taken lightly, local leaders say.
Arau member of parliament Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim urged the council's president, Affendi Rajini Kanth, to act swiftly to address the issue, describing the royal reminder as firm and timely.
"His Majesty's message is crystal clear and serious. The president must act without delay," he said in a Facebook post.
Shahidan, who briefly served as council president between April and June 1995, was present at today's groundbreaking ceremony for the council's new headquarters at Persiaran Wawasan, opened by the Raja of Perlis himself.
Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, in a separate statement, acknowledged the royal advice and pledged that all parties would respond appropriately.
"Deepest gratitude to His Majesty for the advice and guidance to (the council). May every party take the necessary action," he said.
When contacted, Affendi said the royal reprimand would further strengthen efforts already underway to clean up legacy practices within the council's administration.
"Since I took over last year, we have been gradually rooting out this culture that has long plagued the council's system. We fully appreciate His Majesty's reminder... it motivates us to become an exemplary local authority," he said.
Earlier, the His Majesty had expressed concern that bureaucratic red tape and "Little Napoleon" behaviour among certain officials continued to tarnish the council's image, an issue that, he added, had affected him personally.

'Madam Dear' resigns from Democrat Party amid post-leak fallout Thailand

BANGKOK: Watanya Bunnag, also known as 'Madam Dear' (pic), has announced her resignation from the Democrat Party. On Monday (June 23), she posted a short message on her personal Facebook page (@ thanking the public and the party: "Thank you to the public. Thank you to the Democrat Party. Thank you to all party members for the opportunity to serve. I hereby resign as a member of the Democrat Party. Thank you." Her resignation comes just days after the Democrat Party's executive committee voted 19 to 7 on June 19 to remain in the coalition government. The decision followed the leak of an audio recording of a conversation between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, in which the Commander of Thailand's 2nd Army Region was mentioned. The party's resolution triggered a wave of internal dissent, leading to resignations in protest. Among them were Ploythalay Laksamesaengchan, an executive committee member, and Napapol Jirakul, a Bangkok Metropolitan Councillor, who cited concerns over the government's transparency and leadership. Watanya's departure adds to the growing signs of internal division within the Democrat Party as it navigates political fallout from the controversial audio leak and public concerns about national sovereignty and government accountability. - The Nation/ANN

Anwar lauds Qatar Emir for brokering ceasefire in Middle East

KUALA LUMPUR: Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani's initiative to broker a ceasefire between Iran, Israel and the United States has successfully defused tensions in the Middle East, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He described the move as a crucial step that averted a wider confrontation and conflict in the region. "I also had a call with the Emir of Qatar, His Royal Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, this afternoon. I expressed my appreciation for his vital role in securing the ceasefire among Iran, Israel and the US. "This is an important step that successfully defused tensions and prevented a larger confrontation and conflict in the Middle East," Anwar said in a Facebook post today. According to Anwar, Sheikh Tamim informed him that although Qatar had found itself in a difficult position, being drawn into the conflict, he still chose to prioritise the bigger picture for regional peace. "I appreciate his steadfastness and sincerity in supporting these peace efforts, including Qatar's continuous role in ceasefire negotiations between Palestine and Israel," Anwar said. He added that Sheikh Tamim had also contacted US President Donald Trump to discuss the peace efforts. "He used the opportunity to urge the US to focus on efforts to stop the genocide in Gaza and establish a just and lasting peace," he said. Anwar reiterated that Malaysia would continue to support all efforts towards a peaceful resolution based on the principles of justice and sovereignty. "Honest negotiations that respect the rights of every nation are an absolute prerequisite for building lasting peace in the region and throughout the world," he said.
