Woman Defends 'Hardest Decision' to Euthanize Dog Over Behavior

After a year of constant training and exhausting all options for giving a reactive dog the best quality of life, one woman came to the "hardest decision" to perform behavioral euthanasia.
Addie and family rescued a dog named Spirit from a shelter and welcomed him home when he was only 6 months old. It took time getting him out of his shell. She told Newsweek via TikTok that he was "very timid and scared," but they worked hard on trying to get him comfortable outside the shelter environment.
However, the older he became, the worse his reactivity got to both dogs and unfamiliar humans. This eventually turned into aggression.
"Many times these incidents led to us getting bitten when we tried to intervene," she said. "We had a reactive dog in the past, so we did know how to deal with this situation."
The family took Spirit to several different trainers; however, each did not have a positive outcome. Then the dog's behavior became unpredictable. Aggression took over at random times, but when it was over, he also looked confused and shaken.
"After over a year of continuous work and trying everything we possibly could, he went after my Shepherd mix, River, one day," Addie said. "He had him full grip in his mouth around the throat, and if I hadn't intervened in time, River wouldn't be here."
That, along with his quality of life, led Addie to decide it was time for behavioral euthanasia. They felt as if they'd exhausted all options and that his suffering became too great for him to be forced to live.

"... we couldn't risk rehoming him because of the risk he could get out and seriously injure a child, person, or animal," she said.
The American Kennel Club defines behavioral euthanasia as the humane way to end a dog's life due to severe behavioral issues linked with aggression that could cause harm to people or other animals. These dogs are "unsafe," with the key issue being their untrustworthiness due to aggression triggers, which can either be clear or unpredictable.
Viewer Reactions
The TikTok video, which reached over 1 million views as of Wednesday, left viewers split on the decision to follow through on behavioral euthanasia, with many unaware this was a common crossroads pet parents experience.
"Please don't ever feel bad/failed him. They were fighting demons in their heads and you freed them," one defended.
Another added: "For everyone in this situation, you did the right thing. Life is too much for some dogs, they don't understand and are scared. You gave him the best life you could, you gave him a peaceful closure to this cruel world."
However, others didn't see it that way. Someone wrote: "There should NEVER EVER be any dog euthanized because of behavior, are children euthanized because of behavior."
A fourth user commented: "Don't agree with this at all. Any dog's behaviour can be fixed with the correct training..."

Foster Dog Finally Learns to Trust, Plants Surprise Kiss on Rescuer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After months of gaining a foster dog's trust, one woman squealed with excitement when the canine finally showed her first sign of accepting the love. TikTok user @thefatdog welcomed home Meadow as her foster dog from the nonprofit animal rescue, Saving South Texas. Meadow gave birth to 10 puppies in the Rio Grande Valley, an Instagram post from the rescue stated. And based on the dog's scars, the foster mother believes she had also been abused, leading Meadow to be hesitant about humans. This foster mom worked with Meadow, day-in-and-day out, to show her that not all humans will hurt her. She put no timeline on gaining Meadow's trust. There would be no giving up on her watch. Then, unexpectedly, Meadow finally set aside her fear and took a leap of faith. She planted a gentle, sloppy kiss on her foster mom's face, which was captured and shared in an August 8 TikTok video. Thrilled about this giant step forward, the foster mom gasped with excitement. However, she noted her reaction scared Meadow. She "messed up" and spent every moment after trying to teach Meadow that she will never be punished for kisses. The video's text overlay reads: "As foster parents, this is why we have to stay calm. Scared dogs read everything, even our actions." Time and patience again took over in this household, and soon enough, Meadow couldn't stop giving out kisses. She went from being unable to look at her foster family in the face to accepting and sharing love. And since then, this foster family has learned that Meadow is nothing but a ball of affection, according to @thefatdog in the video's comments section. She'll only continue to blossom from this point on and into her forever home. Newsweek reached out to @thefatdog via TikTok for additional information and comment. Chocolate Recall Sparks Nationwide Warning to Customers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Neuhaus Chocolates NV is recalling their Belgian Chocolate Moments Smurfs 'Popping Milk Chocolates with Cookies because the product contains wheat which was not declared on the packaging. Newsweek reached out to the company via email Monday for comment. Why It Matters Numerous recalls have been initiated this year due to the potential for damaged products, foodborne illness, contamination and undeclared food allergens. Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or allergies every year. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine "major" food allergens in the U.S. are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, Crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts. People with a wheat allergy could experience a "serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products," the FDA warns. What To Know Neuhaus Chocolate can be seen related to a recall in August 2025. (Photo from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) Neuhaus Chocolate can be seen related to a recall in August 2025. (Photo from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) In the alert, the FDA says the recalled chocolates were distributed from July 21, 2025, until August 4, 2025, by Neuhaus stores in Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and via their online store. The impacted batch numbers are 80108690 and 80108763 with a best use before date of January 13, 2026, the FDA alert says. There have been no reports of illnesses related to this recall and 150 units of the impacted products were sold, the FDA says. What People Are Saying The FDA in their alert in part: "The action was initiated after it was discovered during an internal check that product containing wheat was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by an exceptional combination of circumstances in which the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) did not include the allergen on the packaging." In an email to Newsweek in January, the FDA said: "Most recalls in the U.S. are carried out voluntarily by the product manufacturer and when a company issues a public warning, typically via news release, to inform the public of a voluntary product recall; the FDA shares that release on our website as a public service. "The FDA's role during a voluntary, firm-initiated, recall is to review the recall strategy, evaluate the health hazard presented by the product, monitor the recall, and as appropriate alert the public and other companies in the supply chain about the recall. "The FDA provides public access to information on recalls by posting a listing of recalls according to their classification in the FDA Enforcement Report, including the specific action taken by the recalling company. The FDA Enforcement Report is designed to provide a public listing of products in the marketplace that are being recalled." Additional information on recalls can be found via the FDA's Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts. What Happens Next Customers who have purchased the recalled product who have a wheat allergy are asked to return it to the original place of purchase and not to consume it, the FDA says. People with additional questions may contact the company via phone at +32 2 568 23 00 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central European Summer Time on weekdays or via email at customercare@
