Concept cafes explode in popularity in Japan

The world bursts at the seams with fun, pleasure, joy. It may not look that way but it's so. Cares banished, time transcended, laughter resounding, champagne corks popping, clothes flying open (not quite off), anime music throbbing and in the whirlpool bath in the center of the room a bikini-clad young woman completes the picture of wild, joyous abandon. Shame on those of us not of the party! We could be. We too are invited.
It's as near as the nearest 'concept café' – konkafe in Japanese – very near indeed if Spa (July 29-Aug 5) is right in estimating their number in Tokyo alone (vagueness of definition makes a precise count impossible) at 1,400.
What is it about pleasure, though, that debauches it almost at birth? Does it contain the seeds of its own corruption? Is it peculiarly vulnerable to infectious invasion? Spa recalls with nostalgia the innocence of the first konkafes. They were 'maid cafés' (meido kissa), born with the century, circa 2001.
This was the heyday of the otaku, Japan's Peter Pans, chronologically adult boys and girls whose lives were more virtual than real, whose social and sexual relationships were with manga and anime characters. Maid cafés were their Neverland, spreading outward from Tokyo's Akihabara, capital of virtual and electronic Japan. The maids, waitress-hostesses in maid costumes, were (seemed at least, which here amounts to the same thing) anime characters themselves, with their pink bows, lace frills, high socks and winsome smiles. The pop culture site Magical Trip offers this description:
'Stepping into a maid café feels like wandering into another world You're greeted with an energetic 'Welcome home, Master!' and instantly released from everyday life… Just this form of address ('master,' 'princess') makes you feel like a special existence… The atmosphere inside is also noteworthy. The gorgeous and cute decorations make you feel like you've stepped into an anime world.'
There's nothing new under the sun, at least nothing that isn't as old as it is new. Replace the word 'maid' with asobi-onna (women of pleasure) and suddenly we're back 1000 years in time. They didn't call it 'anime' then, but they may almost as well have, and if the fantasy unfolded on boats instead of cafes, what of that?
'By the end of the 10th century,' explains historian Janet Goodwin in 'Selling Songs and Smiles,' 'asobi-onna had developed their distinctive practice of using small boats to stage entertainment for men at ports' on rivers near Kyoto.
She quotes a courtier named Oe Yukitoki (955-1010): 'The younger women melt men's hearts with rouge and powder and songs and smiles, while the older women give themselves the jobs of carrying the parasols and poling the boats… A tryst on a boat on the waves equals a lifetime of delightful encounters.' Wouldn't he have felt right at home at a maid café?
If only it could have stayed that way! Impossible. Success invites imitation, imitation proliferation, proliferation novelty, novelty diversification, diversification competition, competition pressure, pressure expansion of services demanded and offered – and before you know it, the maids aren't 'serving' any more, they're 'servicing,' with all the wrinkles and ramifications that suggests. It's that kind of world, we're that kind of species.
Seven hundred years after Oe the scene had evolved into the urban licensed pleasure quarters, of which the 17th century novelist and (sic) priest Asai Ryoi (1612-91) wrote, 'By her nature a courtesan is a woman who… dresses up and adorns herself, and so is quite alluring… Her charming willowy tresses, her face lovely as cherry blossom, her eyebrows with mascara recalling the deep green treetops of the distant mountains… And how lovely when she moves, swaying back and forth; truly she could easily be mistaken for the living incarnation of the Amida Buddha! When compared with this creature, a man's wife can hardly seem more than a salted fish long past its prime!'
To return to the sordid present: 'It's a glutted market,' a 20-something konkafe operator tells Spa, 'and competition for customers is hot so that more and more 'services' have to be offered' – more fetishes catered to, some of which Spa describes but we need not, lest the imagination atrophy.
Struggling to keep things under some semblance of control is the Adult Entertainment Business Law. Revisions to it went into effect last month, tightening controls and driving numerous establishments into bankruptcy – partly owing, Spa hears, to operators mischievously alerting police to competitors' alleged violations. Others don the protective mantle of konkafe innocence, obscuring their real identity as hostess bars, girls bars, kyabakurabu (cabaret-nightclubs) and suchlike 'soapland' ero-entertainment venues. Boundaries blur, lines are crossed, anything can happen and much does.
One of the law's aims is to keep minors out. Underage staff and underage clients bedevil the industry. More distasteful still is the hiring and exploitation of girls with development disorders and mental illnesses. 'No wrist cuts,' reads a sign Spa hears of posted publicly in one konkafe – the macabre and the erotic as kissing cousins.
This too the magazine hears from one konkafe operator: 'So many women want to work in konkafes.' (Why? one wonders in passing? Because it beats office work? Because it's pseudo-showbiz?)
'The inevitable result,' the operator continues, 'is a 'cast' of mixed good actors and bad. It's a problem. Among them are young women with development disabilities. The other day (one of our girls) was followed home by a stalker. She had no sense of danger. She told us later, much pleased at the coincidence, 'Near my house I met a regular customer' – while I, listening to her, broke into a cold sweat.' No harm done, apparently – but it's a predatory world, and defenselessness is terrifying.

Leila Kissa Kashiwakura during a rehearsal of 'Mogareta Tsubasa: Square Roots' in Tokyo in July (Miako Ichikawa) Growing up, Leila Kissa Kashiwakura repeated the same answers to the same curious questions countless times: 'I'm not a fast runner,' 'I'm not good at English,' 'I was born and raised in Japan.' Kashiwakura, 25, is now a lawyer taking cases that impact foreign nationals. Her father is from Mali in West Africa, and her mother is from Japan. In elementary school, classmates would innocently hurl hurtful words at her that they would never utter to those with the same skin color. Even when someone refused to accept the school lunch she served, saying it was 'dirty,' Kashiwakura never spoke of the insult at home. She did not want to sadden her parents because she already knew the stares her father had to endure in public. In those moments, Kashiwakura and her elder brother would sit in front of the TV and pretend to be anime heroes. She let her beloved characters live in her mind, struggled alongside them and grew stronger. Eventually, she came to believe: 'Leila can only be Leila, and that is all I need to be.' Kashiwakura went on to attend the Nihon University College of Art, aspiring to become an anime creator. In her second year, she saw a news report on her phone that took her breath away: A Nigerian man had starved to death at a Japanese immigration facility. He had gone on a hunger strike after refusing a deportation order because he didn't want to be separated from his child. The man reminded Kashiwakura of her own father. A sense of fear that shook her to the core did not leave her mind, even when she was laughing with friends. She realized that the only way to process that feeling was to put herself in a position to protect others. Kashiwakura began studying law while attending her university. She passed the bar exam when she was still in law school. This spring, she began working as a lawyer, mainly dealing with issues faced by foreign nationals. In Japan, there are few lawyers with a foreign heritage. Even when Kashiwakura visits police stations or courthouses for work, few people assume she is a lawyer. She is sometimes asked to undergo bag checks. On the other hand, some foreign clients appear visibly relieved the moment they see her. 'I have come to genuinely appreciate the way I look,' she said. Kashiwakura feels uneasy living in a society that has given rise to the populist term 'Japanese First.' But her feelings are more complex than simple anger. She wonders what leads people to think that way. In her favorite manga, 'Attack on Titan,' those who are discriminated against can, in turn, become people who discriminate. She keeps a quote from the manga close to her heart. A father, who lost his daughter as he tries to break the cycle of hatred, says, 'At the very least, we have to get the children out of this forest.' She continues to ask herself how people can ever break free from that cycle. Kashiwakura cannot forget the words of a man who was granted refugee status in Japan after enduring a long struggle. The man said delicious food tastes even better and is more enjoyable when you share it with the person next to you, rather than eating alone. That is the kind of society she wants to help build. Kashiwakura will play a high school student of African descent in the stage production 'Mogareta Tsubasa (Torn-away wings): Square Roots' in Tokyo on Aug. 9 and 10. Lawyers have worked with children on the original play series since 1994. This year's production portrays how children with foreign roots navigate life in Japan. Through the performance, she wants to tell children struggling with their roots or nationality: 'You do not have to force yourself to find an answer. You are who you are. Sony hikes profit forecasts after strong quarter for games

Sony expects its annual earnings to be boosted by the gaming sector By Katie Forster and Kyoko Hasegawa PlayStation-maker Sony raised its annual profit forecasts on Thursday, citing strong performance in its key gaming business and a smaller-than-expected negative impact of U.S. trade tariffs. The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate said "user engagement continued its strong momentum" in the video game sector. Its shares surged more than six percent in Tokyo after the announcement. Monthly active users in June and total gameplay hours on PlayStation consoles in the April-June quarter both increased six percent year-on-year, it said. It added that "the situation surrounding the additional US tariffs is still fluid, and we intend to continue to monitor it and take action to minimize its impact". "The impact of the additional US tariffs on operating income is estimated to be approximately 70 billion yen, a decrease of 30 billion yen from the previous forecast." The company hiked its net profit forecast for the current 2025-26 financial year to 970 billion yen, up from the previous estimate of 930 billion yen. But even the higher forecast would not top the record net profit of 1.1 trillion yen that Sony logged in the previous financial year. Atul Goyal, an equity analyst at Jefferies, said ahead of the earnings release that the massively anticipated global release of the game "Grand Theft Auto VI" in May 2026 "could lead to peak game profits" for Sony. GTA VI, which will be released on the PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's XBox, will be set in Miami-like Vice City and features a playable female protagonist for the first time. The PlayStation 5, which launched in 2020, is entering a "late" stage of the usual lifecycle for a console, Goyal said. "Sony's outlook hinges on navigating tariff headwinds near-term, leveraging GTA6's blockbuster potential... and cyclical console risks," he said. "A sensors spin-off could transform valuation, while music provides steady growth and pictures provides stability." Music streaming is an important business pillar for Sony, which has an impressive back catalogue and a current roster that includes artists such as Beyonce and Lil Nas X. The Japanese giant, which saw net profit jump 23 percent on-year in this year's April-June quarter, also raised its operating profit forecast on Thursday. Sony last month said it had bought a strategic 2.5 percent stake in Japanese game franchise giant Bandai Namco, which owns "Gundam" and arcade classic "Pac-Man", with a view to growing its anime business. (AP Photo) Japanese entertainment and electronics company Sony said Thursday that its profit surged 23% in the last quarter from the year before, as damage from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs was less than it had expected. The Tokyo-based manufacturer reported its April-June profit totaled 259 billion yen, or $1.8 billion, up from 210 billion yen. Quarterly sales edged up 2% to 2.6 trillion yen ($17.7 billion) as demand grew for games and network services, imaging solutions and sensors. The maker of PlayStation game machines, digital cameras, Walkman audio players and Spider-Man movies said those positive factors offset the negative impact from unfavorable exchanges rates. Sony said its network business also was drawing more subscribers to its online services. Sony raised its forecast for its profit in the full fiscal year until March 2026 to 970 billion yen ($6.6 billion), from an earlier forecast of 930 billion yen ($6.3 billion). The revised projection is still lower than what it earned in the previous fiscal year at 1 trillion yen. Sony now estimates the impact of the additional U.S. tariffs on its operating income at 70 billion yen ($476 million), much better than the initial estimate of 100 billion yen ($680 million). One of the successes among Sony's entertainment franchises was the latest 'Demon Slayer' animation movie, which is part of a hit series and is doing well at the box office.
