Act of 'disturbing' cruelty leaves 1 horse dead and several others injured at Welland, Ont., ranch
Police said in a news release on Friday, staff at a horse boarding farm found several horses with injuries "consistent with cuts and stab wounds" on Thursday morning.
Eight horses were targeted, police said. One was found dead at the scene, another was moved to an emergency vet in Guelph, Ont., and the others were treated at the farm.
CBC News confirmed the farm was Eagle Wing Ranch on 426 Buchner Rd. in Welland. The ranch is described as a "family owned and operated hunter/jumper facility."
Niagara police constable Richard Hingley told CBC News the horses at the ranch were there for "several reasons," such as riding and shows. Other horses were pets "to other people who don't have farms," he said.
Amanda Janssen at the ranch said they were "reeling" and "grieving" and asked for privacy.
In a Facebook post, Janssen said there were "no words to describe the shock and devastation our barn staff and family felt as yesterday unfolded."
"It felt like a terrible dream you were begging to wake up from. The grief is heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special horse and the injuries of 7 others," Janssen said in the post.
An 'extremely devastating' loss
Hingley said in his experience, he had never seen any "personal attack" on horses. He said in attending other incidents involving these animals and having friends who own them, he knows "horses are not pets to their owners, they're family members."
"When there is a tragic loss to a horse, it's extremely devastating to the individuals," he added.
Hingley said the ranch owners "have no idea" who could have targeted the ranch or horses.
"We have to be open to everything, whether someone is upset with the ranch, whether someone is upset with a particular horse owner or all avenues in between there," he said.
Niagara police said the investigation is ongoing and their Forensic Services Unit went to the scene and "conducted a thorough examination for evidence." Police are also asking other jurisdictions in the area if they've had similar reports.
Hingley the incident happened between 11 p.m. on July 30 and 6 a.m. on July 31.
"What we are appealing for right now is for anyone that may have been in the area driving at that time to go back, check their dash cam footage if they have some," he said.

Former Department of Government Efficiency staffer Edward Coristine was allegedly assaulted in an attempted carjacking in Washington, D.C., over the weekend, according to police records obtained by CBS News — an incident that led President Trump to threaten to put the nation's capital under federal control. 19-year-old Coristine — who is known for his online moniker "Big Balls" — was allegedly surrounded and assaulted by a group of approximately 10 teenagers near his car early Sunday morning, according to a report from the Metropolitan Police Department. Two 15-year-olds were arrested and charged with unarmed carjacking. Coristine and his significant other later told police that they "saw the suspects approach and make a comment about taking the vehicle," and "for her safety, he pushed his significant other … into the vehicle and turned to deal with the suspects," the police report said. Police officers who were patrolling the area spotted the incident and stepped out of their cruiser, leading most of the teens to flee on foot, but two of the assailants were stopped, identified by Coristine and arrested. The two arrestees were identified by police only as a 15-year-old male and a 15-year-old female from Hyattsville, Maryland. Police said in a statement that "multiple suspects remain outstanding." Emergency medical services did not transport anybody as part of the incident, D.C. Fire and EMS told CBS News. A black iPhone 16 was also stolen, the report said. Prior to the police report's release, Mr. Trump posted about the incident on Truth Social, sharing a photo of what appeared to be a bloodied "incredible young man" whom he said was "beaten mercilessly by local thugs." Billionaire Elon Musk — the former leader of DOGE — later said the victim was a member of DOGE. He wrote that the staffer spotted a group of people allegedly attempting to assault a young woman, and "ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion," although Musk's description of the incident did not align with the police report and the extent of Coristine's injuries was unclear. CBS News has reached out to Musk for comment. Mr. Trump said crime in the nation's capital is "totally out of control" and called on authorities to "prosecute these 'minors' as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14." The president also threatened to put D.C. under federal control if the city doesn't "get its act together, and quickly." "If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City," he wrote. Mr. Trump has backed the idea of federalizing D.C. in the past. The Constitution gives Congress the power to govern the city, but since 1973, the federal government has allowed D.C. residents to elect a mayor and city council that handle most aspects of local government. The city's autonomy is still limited, with Congress maintaining the right to override local laws — and Congress could choose to repeal the city's 52-year-old self-rule. Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for D.C., said in a statement: "It's time we start taking crime more seriously irrespective of the age of the criminal. No longer can we coddle young criminals while innocent victims are being assaulted and maimed and young criminals avoid consequences. It's time for this to end." Coristine was one of the best-known members of Musk's DOGE team, which swept through the federal government earlier this year in an effort to cut government spending. He was involved in DOGE efforts at the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Social Security Administration, Health and Human Services and other agencies. Coristine resigned from the federal government in late June. He rejoined federal service days later as a special government employee with the Social Security Administration, which told CBS News at the time he would focus on "improving the functionality of the Social Security website." Former Idaho football coach, accused of sexual abuse of a minor, arrested again
A former head coach of the Caldwell High School football team was arrested again for a no contact order violation, just two months after he was detained on a charge of felony sexual abuse of a minor. Kip Crofts, of Middleton, was booked into the Canyon County Jail on Wednesday for the violation, according to online jail records. He pleaded not guilty to the violation at his July 31 hearing, where Crofts' private defense attorney argued his client was 'unlawfully charged.' Crofts was arrested in June for allegedly masturbating in front of a 14-year-old child last year, according to an indictment filed by Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Kyra Venecia. The alleged incident occurred in December, and the Nampa Police Department was asked to investigate a child sexual abuse allegation involving Crofts a month later. Following the investigation, a grand jury indicted Crofts, who was then arrested on a $50,000 felony warrant, court records showed. Crofts, 59, could face up to 25 years in prison and a $50,000 fine if he's convicted. His trial is set to begin Nov. 18 in Canyon County District Court. Crofts has pleaded not guilty, according to court records. The Caldwell School District hired Crofts to take over its football program in February 2023 and left earlier this year. He previously served as a head coach at Payette and Meridian high schools. He also was an assistant coach at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise for three years. Crofts was working as a custodian for the city of Nampa's Development Services office at the time of his arrest. Law enforcement previously said there could be more victims. Police asked anyone with additional information about a possible crime involving Crofts to contact their local law enforcement agency. Mother of girls says they had 'zero contact' with Crofts Middleton police visited Crofts' home on July 30 regarding a tip about a possible no contact order violation, which stipulates that Crofts have no contact with any minors. After arriving, a Middleton officer discovered that Crofts' wife was running a day care and snow cone business out of their home, according to court records. The officer found two female children outside the home at the time of Crofts' arrest. The mother of the two girls spoke at the hearing on the violation and said she'd come over to the house 'on her own accord' for snow cones and speak to Crofts' wife. They stood outside on the porch for the entirety of their visit, she said. 'We were unaware of the presence of Mr. Crofts in the house. We were not invited in, and Mr. Cross never made his presence known,' the woman said in court. 'We had zero contact with him, and I have no reason to believe he was even aware of our presence.' The Canyon County Prosecutor's Office argued at Crofts' July 31 hearing that the circumstances of the violation are 'concerning' and argued that he's a high risk to children in the community. They asked for a $10,000 bond. His attorney, Alex Briggs, questioned police's actions in arresting Crofts and argued that the mother's statement provides a case to remove his bond. 'There's no alleged contact here,' he said. 'It's not a crime unless you have contact.' Briggs asked for Crofts to be released on his own recognizance. But 3rd Judicial District Magistrate Judge J.R. Schiller concluded that the Crofts were operating a snow cone stand on their property, and that he didn't know whether the two girls were the only children who had come on their property. 'He's charged with sexual abuse of a child,' Schiller added. 'Obviously the court has concerns when they're then operating a stand at their home that would attract children to it, and I think the community has a right to be concerned about kids' safety.' He set Crofts' bond at $5,000. Crofts' next hearing on the violation is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 3.

Rowan County Sheriff's Office searching for burglary suspect
Tonight the Rowan County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residential breaking and entering. ALSO READ: $25K reward offered in Rowan County murder case The homeowner reported seeing the suspect coming out of his house. The suspect, who had already fled into the woods when deputies arrived, is described as a white man, possibly in his 30s with scruffy facial hair, wearing an orange shirt and blue jeans. The man was last seen running into the woods towards Long Ferry Road. It's possible that the suspect may be injured. The homeowner told deputies that he fired a single shot at the suspect. Residents in the area are encouraged to call 911 should they see anyone fitting the above description. As of 9:58 pm, deputies and other law enforcement personnel were still on the scene searching for the suspect. Deputies have no reason to believe there is any danger to the public at this time.
