UAE school pupils look to the future with strong GCSE results

The National17 hours ago
Pupils across the UAE received their GCSE grades on Thursday morning, with many schools reporting record-breaking results.
Young people across the country anxiously logged into the results portal to receive their grades at 11am.
About a third of the UAE's roughly 600 private schools follow the British curriculum. This makes it one of the largest private school markets in the world, and a major outpost of British education.
At Jebel Ali School, one of the country's oldest, secondary head Eleanor Wade said 40 per cent of grades were awarded at levels 9 and 8, formerly A and A*.
She called it 'a truly outstanding accomplishment.' The school now looks ahead to the expansion of its Sixth Form, aiming to build on this year's success.
It saw 107 pupils sit 927 exams this year, up from 80 children and 681 exams in 2024. Most schools in the city have grown on the back of a population boom.
Brighton College Dubai said it celebrated its best-ever GCSE results. This year, 25 per cent of all results were Grade 9, while 45 per cent were at Grades 9–8.
Among the top achievers was Ibrahim Chatha, who earned 11 Grade 9s. He also scored A* in A-Level Further Mathematics. Rudayna Yassin secured 10 Grade 9s, alongside excelling as an international volleyball player and gifted musician.
Headmaster Simon Crane described the results as 'a wonderful tribute to the brilliance of our pupils and the dedication of their teachers".
Gems Education, the largest private school operator, announced its largest-ever GCSE cohort, with over 4,000 pupils sitting 28,227 exams across 23 schools.
There were 26 per cent of entries who achieved Grades 9–8 or A*, while 45 per cent secured Grades 9–7 (A*-A). It said this significantly outperformed the UK national average for the 12th consecutive year.
Group chief education officer Lisa Crausby credited the results to 'high expectations combined with genuine care and personalised support,'. Jumeirah College and Wellington International were among its top-performing schools.

India to play against Pakistan in Asia Cup, sports ministry confirms

Ending intense speculations amid media and public debates, the government of India announced on Thursday that the Indian team would play their Asia Cup match against Pakistan in Dubai on September 14. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports also clarified that India would continue to play Pakistan in any multi-team sports event, while reiterating that the ban on bilateral games between the two countries would remain in place. "Insofar as bilateral sports events in each other's country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India," the ministry's statement said. Indian media and opposition leaders demanded that the cricket board (BCCI) boycott the match against Pakistan amid the ongoing political tension following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which led to a four-day military conflict between the two countries in May. But the government statement on Thursday has cleared the Indian team to take on Pakistan in the high-voltage Asia Cup Group A match at Dubai International Stadium on September 14. "With regard to international and multilateral events, in India or abroad, we are guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interests of our own sportspersons. It is also relevant to take into account India's emergence as a credible venue to host international sports events,' the statement said. "Accordingly, Indian teams and individual players will take part in international events that also have teams or players from Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in such multilateral events hosted by India.' With the ambitious goal of hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, the Indian government has decided against bowing to public pressure with a practical step. In an interview with Khaleej Times last month, veteran Pakistani sports broadcaster Shahid Hashmi predicted that India would eventually allow the cricket team to play the Asia Cup match against Pakistan. 'It's in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) charter that you need to play and host every IOC member nation. So if you want to bid for the 2036 Olympics, but don't want to play cricket with Pakistan in an international event, it will have serious consequences for India's ambitions to host the Olympics,' Hashmi had said. India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced on Thursday that the country would follow all international sports protocols. "To position India as a preferred destination for hosting international sporting events, the visa process for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies shall be simplified,' the statement said. 'In respect of office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies, a multi-entry visa shall be granted on a priority basis for the duration of their official tenure, subject to a maximum period of five years. This shall facilitate their smooth movement into and within the country, in accordance with international norms. Due protocol and courtesies, as per established practice, shall be extended to the Heads of International Sports Governing Bodies during their visits to India." India, which was scheduled to host the 2025 Asia Cup, brought the tournament to the UAE due to the recent conflict with Pakistan. The tournament will get underway on September 9 and the final is scheduled for September 28. India and Pakistan are drawn in Group A with Oman and the UAE. In Group B, Afghanistan will clash with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Four Stage in this T20 event — a dress rehearsal for next year's Twenty20 World Cup. The Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi will host eight matches, while the Dubai International Stadium will stage 11 games, including the final on September 28. Meanwhile, the Pakistan team have already arrived here ahead of their tri-series against Afghanistan and the hosts UAE. The historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium will host the tri-series from August 29 to September 7, giving the three teams ideal preparation for the Asia Cup in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

CBUAE issues commemorative coins on occasion of establishment of Al Nasr Sports Club

The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE), in collaboration with Al Nasr Sports Club, has issued commemorative silver coins to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Al Nasr Sports Club, one of the most prestigious sports clubs in the UAE. The issuance of the coin is a tribute to the Club's role in supporting the sports movement and enhancing national identity over the past eight decades. The CBUAE issued 1,000 commemorative silver coins, each weighing 40 grammes, with a design that combines the club's symbolism and its rich heritage. The obverse of the coin features the Al Nasr Sports Club logo along with the place and year of establishment, "Dubai 1945". The reverse of the coin displays the coin's nominal value of "80 Dirhams" with the phrase "80th Anniversary of Establishment of Al Nasr Sports Club", surrounded by the name "Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates" in addition to the phrase "Commemorative Coin" in both Arabic and English. The coins have been delivered to Al Nasr Sports Club and will not be available for sale at CBUAE's headquarters or its branches. Saif Humaid Aldhaheri, the CBUAE's Assistant Governor for Banking Operations and Support Services, said, "The issuance of this coin reflects our keenness to mark important national events that contribute to fostering cultural and sporting awareness, and to highlight the achievements of national institutions at both local and global levels. Al Nasr Sports Club represents a sporting edifice that combines history with future ambition." Engineer Marwan bin Ghalita, Chairman of the Board of Director of Al Nasr Sports Club, said, "Al Nasr Club is proud of its history and its pioneering role as the first club to lay the foundation for the sports movement in the UAE, celebrating eighty years of giving and achievements. The CBUAE's issuance of the coin commemorates this legacy and consolidates the club's position in national sports. We consider this day a historic milestone to be proud of, and we thank the CBUAE for highlighting this glory, affirming our commitment to continue the journey of development and successes to serve Emirati sports.'
