During a site inspection on Wednesday, Dachalwal directed officials and the contractor to expedite the work and meet the revised completion deadline of October 7, 2025, coinciding with Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. "If there's no visible progress in the coming days, the contractor will be debarred, and action will be taken against responsible officials," he said, adding that the Municipal Corporation (MC) would not tolerate further delays.
Dachalwal was accompanied by Superintending Engineer Praveen Singla, Executive Engineer Narain Das, CSO Ashwani Sahota and the contractor during the inspection. Originally built by the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA), the Valmiki Bhawan is undergoing a major facelift under the city's civic agency.
Dachalwal said he is personally monitoring all ongoing infrastructure projects and has instructed staff to ensure timely delivery without compromising on quality.

Ludhiana: Commuters irked as part of Pakhowal Road caves in

A portion of Pakhowal Road near the indoor stadium caved in on Saturday morning, causing panic among commuters. The incident, which occurred due to leakage from two private water and sewer connections, is the third such case in just one week. A civic body worker conducting repair work at the cave-in site on Pakhowal road in Ludhiana on Saturday. (Gurpreet Singh/HT) Although the MC sewer line was not damaged, the repeated incidents have shaken public confidence in road safety during the rainy season. Many residents now feel that driving on city roads has become risky, especially after recent cave-ins near Near Shingaar Cinema on July 22, at Mintgumri Chowk on August 2 and at Fountain Chowk on August 4. The problem came to light around 8 am when residents noticed a deep crater, with water visibly flowing underground. The timing worsened the situation as it was Raksha Bandhan, and Pakhowal Road was packed with people heading to meet family members. Arvind Sharma, a resident of SBS Nagar who was passing by, spotted the damaged road and immediately alerted others. 'This is extremely dangerous. In the last two incidents, we were lucky that no one got hurt. But if authorities do not take such issues seriously, it could lead to a tragedy,' he said. Civic body officials rushed to the spot and placed a trolley to block heavy vehicle movement, preventing further damage. Workers then repaired the leakage, claiming the issue had been resolved. 'The leakage was detected at two points and has been fixed. There is no major problem now,' an MC official stated. However, residents remained unconvinced. Arvind Sharma, a civic activist, warned that many busy city roads have small cracks and depressions that could turn into dangerous sinkholes if ignored. 'What the MC is doing is only a temporary patchwork. Without a permanent solution, the problem will return,' he added. The incident has once again raised questions about the quality of road construction and the monitoring of underground water and sewer lines. With the monsoon still active, residents fear that more such cave-ins could occur if preventive inspections are not carried out. For now, traffic on the damaged portion of Pakhowal Road remains restricted. Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes until full repairs are completed.

UP: Amid floods, man takes boat to meet sister on Raksha Bandhan

Varanasi , Manju Devi didn't want her brother, Saurabh Gupta, to visit on Raksha Bandhan this year, not when Varanasi was flooded. However, determined to celebrate the festival, he took a boat and navigated through the waters to reach his sister. UP: Amid floods, man takes boat to meet sister on Raksha Bandhan "My sister told me not to come because of the floods, but since Raksha Bandhan is a once-a-year occasion, I made the trip. I took a boat to get to her place," Gupta said. Although the water level of the Ganga River has been decreasing in Varanasi district, the difficulties for those in flooded areas and nearby rural regions continue. The flood has inundated about 80 per cent of the crops in the surrounding villages. Sampurnanand, a resident of Ramana in Varanasi district, mentioned that farmers in his village primarily depend on vegetable crops. Claiming that crops such as bitter gourd, beans, sponge gourd, brinjal, and papaya have been submerged, leaving farmers feeling disappointed due to their financial losses, he called for compensation and immediate cleanup of the affected areas. Chandrakant Singh, a resident of Hukulganj, shared similar concerns, noting that his family had to move to the second floor of their home as water levels began to rise. He mentioned that women are using boats to reach their brothers to tie rakhis. According to the Central Water Commission, the water level of the Ganga river came down to 69.8 metres on Saturday morning, whereas the danger mark is set at 71.262 metres. Sandeep Srivastava, the Public Relations Officer of Varanasi Municipal Corporation, stated that the Municipal Corporation is working urgently in the flood-affected areas. As floodwaters recede, employees are focused on cleaning, followed by the spraying of bleaching powder. Subsequently, sodium hypochlorite is sprayed using a machine to protect residents from flies, mosquitoes, and the diseases they may carry. A total of 24 flood relief camps have been established, accommodating 4,500 displaced individuals. Teams from the District Administration, Police, NDRF, and Water Police are working together. The flood relief team is continually in contact with affected residents to assist, District Magistrate Satendra Kumar said. Uttar Pradesh's Minister of State for Registration, Stamp and Court Fee, Ravindra Jaiswal, visited flood victims living in relief camps at the Ram Janaki Temple, Dhelvariya, Savitri Lawn, Saraiya, Shailputri Temple and Mauja Hall, Chitrakoot School.
