Boxer Gervonta Davis arrested on domestic violence charge in Florida

The Guardian11-07-2025
Gervonta 'Tank' Davis was arrested Friday in Florida on a domestic violence charge, nearly a month after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend outside her home on Father's Day.
Davis, 30, was taken into custody in Miami Beach and booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County. He is being held without bond, according to jail records.
Police say the World Boxing Association lightweight boxing champion went to his former girlfriend's home in Doral on the night of 15 June to pick up their two children. An argument escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Davis allegedly hit the woman in the back of the head and slapped her in the face as she reached into his car. The slap caused a minor cut to her lip, according to the arrest report.
The victim sent a text to her mother during the incident, saying Davis was assaulting her. When the mother came outside, she saw her daughter crying and arguing with Davis. Police say cellphone video taken by the mother shows Davis throwing a small box at the victim.
Davis declined to sign a Miranda warning form when questioned by police. He was charged with battery causing bodily harm.
The arrest adds to Davis's history of legal trouble, including a 2020 domestic battery charge and jail time related to a 2021 hit-and-run crash in Baltimore.
Davis last fought in March, when he retained his lightweight title by defeating Lamont Roach Jr by a highly disputed majority draw in Brooklyn.

Sean Kingston is jailed for three years over $1million fraud scheme in which 'Beautiful Girls' hitmaker 'used his celebrity status' to dupe victims

Rapper Sean Kingston was jailed for three years today after being convicted of a $1million fraud scheme in which he leveraged his fame to dupe sellers into giving him luxury items that he never paid for. Kingston, whose legal name is Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted in March by a federal jury of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Turner was sentenced to five years in prison last month. Before U.S. Judge David Leibowitz handed down Kingston's sentence, the singer apologized to the judge in the South Florida courtroom and said he had learned from his actions. His attorney asked if he could self-surrender at a later date due to health issues, but the judge ordered him taken into custody immediately. Kingston, who was wearing a black suit and white shirt, removed his suit jacket and was handcuffed and led from the courtroom. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton described Kingston as someone addicted to his celebrity lifestyle even though he could no longer afford to maintain it. 'He clearly doesn't like to pay and relies on his celebrity status to defraud his victims,' Anton said Friday. The federal prosecutor described a yearslong pattern by Kingston of bullying victims for luxury merchandise and then refusing to pay. 'He is a thief and a conman, plain and simple,' Anton said. Defense attorney Zeljka Bozanic countered that the 35-year-old Kingston had the mentality of a teenager - the age he was when he vaulted to stardom. The attorney said Kingston had almost no knowledge of his finances, relying on business managers and his mother. 'No one showed him how to invest his money,' Bozanic said. 'Money went in and money went out on superficial things.' Bozanic said Kingston has already started paying back his victims and intends to pay back every cent once he is free and can start working again. Leibowitz rejected the idea that Kingston was unintelligent or naive, but the judge said he gave the rapper credit for accepting responsibility and declining to testify rather than possibly lying in court. That was in contrast to Kingston's mother, whose trial testimony Leibowitz described as obstruction. Kingston and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team raided Kingston's rented mansion in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Turner was taken into custody during the raid, while Kingston was arrested at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California's Mojave Desert, where he was performing. According to court records, Kingston used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to arrange purchases of luxury merchandise. After negotiating deals, Kingston would invite the sellers to one of his high-end Florida homes and promise to feature them and their products on social media. Investigators said that when it came time to pay, Kingston or his mother would text the victims fake wire receipts for the items, which included a bulletproof Escalade, watches and a 19-foot (5.9-meter) LED TV, investigators said. When the funds never cleared, victims often contacted Kingston and Turner repeatedly, but were either never paid or received money only after filing lawsuits or contacting law enforcement, authorities said. Kingston, who was born in Florida and raised in Jamaica, shot to fame at age 17 with the 2007 hit 'Beautiful Girls,' which laid his lyrics over Ben E. King's 1961 song 'Stand By Me.' His other hits include 2007's 'Take You There' and 2009's 'Fire Burning.'

Sean Kingston sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for $1m wire fraud scheme

Sean Kingston has been sentenced to 3.5 years in prison by a Florida court for a $1m wire fraud scheme, according to NBC South Florida. The 35-year-old singer, born Kisean Anderson, was found guilty in a South Florida court in March alongside his mother, Janice Turner, for accruing about $1m worth of luxury items through falsified payments that never cleared. Turner was sentenced in July to five years in prison with three years probation. The two were initially arrested in May 2024 on theft charges after a Swat raid on Kingston's South Florida mansion. Investigators told the court that Kingston used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to arrange purchases of luxury items, and invited sellers to his Florida homes with the promise to feature them and their merchandise on his accounts. When it came time to pay for the items, such as a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade or an Audemars Piguet watch, Kingston or his mother texted the sellers fake wire receipts. During her trial, Turner admitted to falsifying wires for her son, which she claimed was an effort to protect him from scammers by delaying payments for luxury items. Kingston refused to testify. As evidence, the prosecution presented texts from Kingston to his mother that read: 'I told you to make [a] fake receipt' followed by 'so it [looks] like the transfer will be there in a couple [of] days.' Before the judge delivered his sentence, Kingston apologized and said he had learned from his actions, according to the Associated Press. His lawyer had previously asked the judge for home confinement, due to the non-violent nature of the crime and the fact that Kingston had paid back most of the people he defrauded. Born in Miami and raised in his parents' native Kingston, Jamaica, the singer remains most famous for his 2007 single Beautiful Girls, which topped the Billboard charts. He has released four albums and collaborated with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. In 2011, he scored a modest hit with Justin Bieber on the track Eenie Meenie. According to federal court records, Turner pleaded guilty in 2006 to bank fraud for stealing over $160,000, and served nearly 18 months in prison. Both Turner and Kingston have been sued multiple times for failure to pay for luxury items, most recently by a Florida entertainment systems company in February 2024.

Mother and three children VANISH shortly after she called her mom to complain about abusive husband

A Peruvian woman and her three children are missing in California after she threatened to approach the police because her husband had allegedly beaten her. Sheyla Gutiérrez Rocillo was last weekend during a video chat with her mother, Helga Rocillo Morán, back home and told her that she was ready to report her husband, Josimar Cabrera Cornejo, to the local authorities. Morán told local media outlet, Latina Noticias, that the couple and their children migrated to the United States in 2023 in search of a fresh start, and that Cabrera Cornejo already had a history of assaulting her. 'She told me that Josimar Cabrera Cornejo hit her, mistreated her, and had even hit my youngest grandchild, the youngest of whom is 3 years old. He had slapped her,' the concerned mother said during an interview Thursday. Morán said she last spoke to her daughter and son-in-law and told him that it was time for him to change his attitude. 'I told the father, 'Josimar, if you say you love my daughter and your children, change your mind for their sake,' she recalled. 'She told me that he abused them, hit them. I found out that he had slapped the baby when he was younger. She told me, 'Mom, I can't take it anymore. I'm going to file a complaint today, Saturday.' Morán said that Cabrera Cornejo visibly angered in background during the entire conversation. 'He didn't say anything, but looked at her with a fierce expression,' she said. 'Later, I heard him say, 'Don't file a complaint, you'll hurt me. Morán said that her daughter then told him, 'You're not changing, Josimar. You keep harassing me, abusing me, psychologically, I can't take it anymore.' Morán said she made a second video call in which the couple appeared together before her daughter told her that she was going to take her children to a local park. 'She told me, 'Okay, Mommy, I'm going to take the babies for a walk in the park, we're going to eat, and I'm going to leave them.' It was the last time Morán would ever hear from her daughter. Each of the calls have gone unanswered. 'He had slapped her. I called my daughter, but she didn't answer,' Morán said. Morán said that she communicated with Cabrera Cornejo on Sunday via text message and that he informed her that she had been detained at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office during a scheduled appointment. However, Morán accused Cabrera Cornejo of lying because the offices are never opened on Sundays and his appointment was scheduled for September. 'There's no report with ICE. If she were deported, she would have called me by now,' Morán said. A neighbor told the family that she heard loud screams from the home, but decided not to get involved. A male friend of Gutiérrez Rocillo told La República newspaper that he reached out to California authorities, who located blood stains in front of the condominium. Security camera footage showed the couple entering the home before Cabrera Cornejo appeared alone dragging a large bag across the building. 'They had a somewhat toxic relationship, as he was jealous and assaulted her on occasion,' he said. 'On Saturday, they argued. Her friends in the United States tried to contact him, but received no response … Cabrera is on the run with the three children, and Sheyla's whereabouts are unknown.' A neighbor told Gutiérrez Rocillo's friend that Cabrera Cornejo was arrested and that the children were placed in custody of the police, but has been unable to confirm.
